I'll read more of the stuff later but skimming through it, it does look awesome. It's easy to navigate too.
Great work Melf, you're just getting into website design right? It's not the flashiest of sites, but that just means it's not crammed with a bunch of useless junk. You've got quite a bit of content so far, I can only imagine what it'll be like a year from now. Good job overall. :D
I like it, I got a little lost as to some of the point at first, and the lack of overall lists when you're alphabetized sections contain 1-10 games each, is a bit discouraging. But as you said, it's all on you and in time I'm sure you'll have on kick ass site.
Still, it is sexy in its simplicity.
excellent work, melf. i love reading reviews of old games.. speaking of which, it would rock if you would add a link to have all of the reviews linked on a single page, so that you don't have to click each individual letter if you're just poking around.
edit: dammit thief, you stole my idea.)
Ugh this reminds me of school, I can't wait to get back to the vocational school and work on my E-Commerce site in Asp.net, coding = fun.
I assume you did this in HTML, judging by the .htm :) good work just looking through it some more, enjoying it's flavor.
I'm just gonna go ahead and do some critiquing and see whether or not people agree with my ideas.
I like the home page in which I cannot seem to find many problems, or any in fact that really bother me... except...
This is a really idiotic nit pick but for some reason it annoys me, you have Genesis, and nomad whcih are two consoles, but you also throw in sonic which has nothing to do with the other two than being Sega's mascott esk thing. Wouldn't it just be more effecient say all characters are copy right of sega without the first three specifics?Quote:
Genesis, Sonic, Nomad, and all game characters ©Sega and their respective companies.
On the "My Stuff" page... those are the things you need to get right? So Calling it My Stuff is misleading (When I loaded the page I expected to see a huge list of your sega stuff, and only saw that dinky little thing, leaving my befuddled.)
Also... is that really all you need to have a COMPLETE collection? If so You're my hero. Even so to have collected so much Sega gear is quite impressive.
As Epmode and myself added it would be great to have a complete listing upon clicking on the Reviews page (and the listing for the 32x and CD) or at least a way to see the entire list (The messages at the first page actually do a fine job sitting there so I would say leave those there giving people and idea of your thoughts about the selected console).
Another inconsistancy I noticed is when you select reviews, the letters of the alphabet your lack links for are present, but for the Master Listings, they are omitted. I'd suggest going with the way the reviews are set up.
Originally when I saw the "Home" button at the bottom of the links page, I thought it was kind of pointless. But I realize that since you'll most likely have to scroll down it's actually a GREAT way to do it, so no complaints on the last two pages.
Hope my nitpicking was ok and informative, and anything I said that may be idiotic please do comment as I intend to incorporate some of the ideas into my E-Commerce site.
Nice job Melf. I like the simple design. It's easy to find stuff and loads fast on my dialup line.
If I can provide you with any content, let me know and I'll do my best to help out.
Very nice.
Very easy to browse and pretty good reviews. I like it so far.
Harrison Ford was Rick Deckard in Blade Runner.
Like I said before, it looks like a site from 1998 but that's not necessarilly horrible. It's actually quite good for a first site and if you were to rework it with some CSS and spiff it up a bit more when you learn more it would be awesome (yes, it is possible to spiff up a site but still keep it fast-loading).
In any case, you got farther than I did when I tried to make a 16-bit tribute site (back in, umm... 1998 or 1999), so... thumbs up or whatever.
CSS = Cascading Style Sheets correct? Now I just have to remember what they are exactly, ugh summer = forget everything you learned in school.

By complete I mean with box and manuals. I WISH I had a complete Genny collection, although I'd probably need public storage. :)Quote:

I gave each letter its own page because eventually there'll be too many to list on a single page. This way it's more organized and easier to get to (I believe). A single page would work cool now, but I'd have to separate them later anyway.Quote:

Do you mean how the letter isn't a link when you're on that page? Both the review and master list pages are set up like that, unless you're referring to something else.Quote:

Badass site Melf, I've always thought about doing a Genesis/32X/Sega CD site myself as it's my favorite system of all time. If you want some help with writing content just let me know
great site, i'll have to use it in my great search for genny games. i've always wanted to do something similar but with the snes... maybe i should...
Very awesome site Melf. You're one of my fav members here and I always enjoy listening to what you have to say, here's hoping your site continues to grow.
Why is there a shout out to Got Next, and no shout out to TNL?
I would imagine that is due to Bahn hosting the site.
This site is really great. I'm gonna use the reviews as guidance when I start looking for new Genesis games. I've always been a bit ashamed of my lack of Genesis experience since I didn't get one till 94, and I was mainly into Sonic games. All I knew was Nintendo till Sonic rocked my world.
The Landstalker review jumpstarted some memories. I started playing through it a few years ago on emulator. Don't know where or why I stopped. And I think my memories of Landstalker blend with Dark Savior since I bought that game around that time. I was enjoying Dark Savior till I quit out of frustration (missed on one of them jumps that dropped me down a couple floors). I was playing Phantasy Star 4 as well, got stuck and never finished that either.
The Monster World IV review got me interested in that game... I must check it out.
Awesome.
Watch out, though. That Super Sonic animation looks to have been done (by the art style, at least) by AJ Freda of srb2.org . I don't think he's the fussy type or anything, but just watch out.
Have some better seperation of the links at the top. When you look at the page, it looks like just one big link. Put a diveder of some sort between each, put a box around each, something. I'd also drop the font size of those links a bit.
You also really should have some sort of consistancy between the color of your links. Sometimes red text is a link, sometimes it is just text. Because I clicked on red text to get to a review, I would then believe that I could click on the red text in the review to get somewhere else - but that text isn't a link. Every major grouping of links that I saw used a different color of text as links, and that can be very confusion. You should have one consistent link color, so that I always know what is a link and what isn't.
I'd also say that you also need some consistancy with the navigation elements. Sometimes you top navigation is there, sometimes it isn't. IMHO, it would be best to always have it there, and avoid using the "back" or "features" buttons - those are what browser Back buttons are for.
A few slight nitpicks:
Pulseman's was not developed by Sega. It was made by Game Freak (the same people that did Pokemon).
Snatcher didn't came out for the 3DO in Japan. You're confusing it with Policenauts, which did came out for the 3DO.
This might be a bit of a spoiler, but in the original Splatterhouse, you never do rescue Jennifer. The game has you fighting her after she turns into a hideous monster near the end of the game.
Other than that, great site!
Roxor. If I ever get this college crap straightened out I'll start pouring on the reviews and features. Glad there's somebody out there with the drive to do something like this(Cause I know I couldn't).
I've always thought to myself that you should start your own website and now you have! Other than a couple of navigation issues, you're off to a great start. Carry on!
That's a great idea. It does looks less cluttered that way.Quote:

I put top navigation in both features, so the only pages that don't have it are the master list letter pages, which I don't think really needs them.Quote:

Agk! Sorry about that! I can put that back for you.
I proofread the review for spelling and grammar but tried not to change any ideas or thoughts. If something was changed that you don't agree with, please let me know and I'll set it right. :)
I'm surprised Landstalker didn't make the "Ten Best Genesis Games with Bad Box Art" list. Good choices overall though.
Also, for Trouble Shooter's Japanese name you put in Beat Mania when it should have been Battle Mania. ;)
Crap, I forgot about Landstalker! That's a game that really deserves to be on that list. Maybe I should change it for DJ Boy...
Fixed the TS mix up. Thanks!

I was asked if I could contribute to Got Next and I said I would do some stuff occasionally. I have kind of run out of ideas though. I'm so used to doing message board topics that focus on chronologies and picture links and have me ask questions to fill in the blanks. I don't focus on writing quality really at all in TNL threads but for a site article I would have to. Actual writing isn't something I'm good at.Quote:

Very nice site, fun to read around. Any reason for all the latin spread about? Maybe there's a reason going over my head or something. :p

EDIT: Found a slight problem with your master list. Went to A of the Gensis list, and the Publisher column is like... chopped in half. Tried fullscreening IE (yeah, I use IE  ) and it made no difference. Dunno if it's just my end or not. (NOTE: It just seems to be that single page, every other one is fine)
The site continues to improve, looking much better than a few days ago. One thing I would look into though, the buttons you have to navigate (like at the end of reviews) have rounded corners, but they put in a white box. I would find someone to make the white parts transparent or something, it would make them look alot better.
Other than that, things look they are comming along, good job.
I have no idea why you're seeing this. I'm looking at the review in both Fire Fox and IE and don't see that anywhere.Quote:

A few corrections to the Master List:
The Genesis versions of Double Dragon 1 & 2 were not developed by Technos. They were both made by contracted developers.
DD1 was published by Ballistic and developed by Accolade (or was it the other way around, I can't remember). DD2 was published AND developed by Pal Soft.
Technos never developed an actual Genesis game themselves except for a cancelled Popeye game. Also, the only Mega Drive Double Dragon to get a Japanese release was DD2 (DD3 and DD5 were not released in Japan).
Also, DD3 was developed by Eurocom
Ballistic = Accolade. It was just a short-lived console label of Accolade's.Quote:

Johhny, corrections have been made. If you see any other boo-boos please let me know.
I figured I would take a look at the Master List too and help fill in some blanks.
Aero the Acrobat was released in 1993 and Aero 2 in 1994.
Action 52 was developed by Farsight.
Aquatic Games was developed by Millenium and released in 1993.
Alien 3 was released in 1992 and developed by Probe.
Barcelona '92 was published by U.S. Gold.
Brutal: Paws of Fury was released in 1994.
Crossfire/Super Airwolf wasn't developed by Universal. They're only listed on the game because they own the Airwolf license. I think Kyugo developed it as well as published it but some other company called A.I. is listed on the Crossfire version and I don't know what's up with that.
Crusader of Centy was developed by Nextech.
With regards to arcade and PC ports, I see that you generally have listed the original developer instead of the developer that did the port, for example Atari Games for Cyberball, Williams for Hit The Ice and 3D Realms for Duke Nukem 3D. In that case, to be consistent Cyber Cop should have Core listed as developer and Buck Rogers should have SSI listed since they made the original computer games. For arcade ports, Caliber 50 should have Seta listed and Atomic Robo Kid should have UPL listed if the classification is done this way.
On the other hand, if you want the porter under the developer name then After Burner II would have Dempa as developer. Man, I hope all that made sense.
I think Sega published The Hybrid Front.
Great work on the site Melf, Any idea when you will do a space harrier 2 review? :sonic:
I've attached a screenshot of what I mean about the latin.
Ah, you had to highlight it! Ok, I fixed that.
Neo: I've updated the list.
Thanks everyone!
I am such an idiot, i ask for the one game not listed. I am sorry. :wtf:Quote:

Site pimpage +1!
Lots of new feaures up, including some classic Genesis commericals! New reviews have been posted as well.
That Sonic 2 infomercial rules the world. Nice updates, Melf.
I enjoyed the "Ten Best Genesis Games with Bad Box Art" feature. Looking forward to more features like this that refuse to merely review games. There are many facets of this burgeoning artform that deserve discussion. Bravo!
On a more critical note, I find black backgrounds w/light words hard to read. I'm sure studies would back up my anecdotal evidence. The Genesis was black, tho, so I can't really fault you for it. The black gives the site a more Genesis-like feel. Nice and retro. The font is big enough that it really isn't that bad. Hm. I take it back. I like the black backgrounds. Yays!
Actually, I've read that black backgrounds with light text is easier on your eyes than vice versa.Quote:

I hope everyone has their brightness high enough to see the "SEGA" logo on the background image.
72 reviews and counting!
I'm always looking for contributors. Anyone want to write a review and/or feature? :D
i see you added some of sam pettus's stuff. isnt he "the scribe"? good reading right there.
Sure is!
There are a few sites hosting stuf from SegaBase. Sam's articles are awesome and are very insightful. I've got the ones on the Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X, but Eidolon's Inn has the whole thing, Saturn articles and all.
What is the point of having like 15 Jeremy reviews, 14 of which give a game a 10, one of which he gives a 9, and all filled with lame, overused cliches in the typical Jeremy style? I realize that ragging on Jeremy's reviews nowadays is beating a dead horse, but come on...
Rating systems are a mistake anyway, even the common '10' rating system. You can give a game 2/10 or 3/10 but either way it's shit, so they might as well be the same rating. If you're really have to have ratings, it's best to just use the five star system or even 4 is enough: bad, playable, good and essential.
Reviews are something you quickly scan through for information. They're not literature. So it's best to shorten them and get as much information into as small a space as you can. Most of those Megadrive/Genesis reviews are too long winded. They're valuable reviews though, of games I haven't seen reviewed properly anywhere else.
Add your own reviews Diff, imo it woul be nice to have multiple reviews for one game.Quote:

There are currently about 73 reviews by 14 contributors, so there's a variety of opinions to be found. There are some crap games reviewed (Sword of Sodan, Awesome Possum), so it's not all 9s and 10s. :)
i really enjoy the site so far Melf. keep up the good work.
Yes, it's better than having to depend on Genesis Collective or Gamefaqs. I just go down through each review thinking "Quick. Get to the gameplay bit."Quote:

So, this past Thursday, Sega-16 turned 10. Damn, it's really been that long? We've reviewed all 32X games, virtually all Genesis games, and most Sega CD games. I'm thinking of expanding coverage to Saturn or Master System. I've also recently begun to get kind of serious with the YouTube channel.
What I really find interesting is that while retro gaming has exploded over the past decade or so, the amount of retro sites online have not. In fact, many that were around when I started are gone. The Genesis Collective, The Genesis Project, and a few others have gone offline. Eidolon's Inn goes offline this Saturday, as well.
Congratulations Melf!
Congrats Melf, kudos to your work (and sustained interest).
Good on you for keeping it up! Reviewing an entire generation of games is fucking insanity.
Eidolon's Inn closing is NUTS. Where am I going to get Kega now?
Congrats Melf!
Touching upon your lamentation concerning the lack of Sites Beholden to Vintage Games, I have become quite bummed at the lack of sites devoted to series or companies. In the late 90s/early 2000s, you couldnt swing a virtual dead cat without hitting a Castlevania Shrine or a site devoted to Cool Commodore games.
Now it's like, if something doesn't have a wikipedia page, there probably isn't much about it anywhere.
Where are the awesome x68000 sites? Fm marty? Dave's Saturn Page?
There's a million "look at this rare thing I bought" youtube videos, but hardly any that really get into any depth (i guess it's because you can't buy research off of eBay).
Mzo turned me onto your boy's Game Sack channel, and it's better than most. But I still heard shit that made me cringe. And I am just a dabbler. Guys like Frog and Neozeedeater and that CRV dude who know tons more must want to choke people sometimes.
That really is the issue. While sites the internet has made access to these obscure products much easier than over a decade ago, with the lack of barriers to posting reviews, you have a bunch of ignorant people posting superficial reviews while the knowledgable people just aren't around. I actually really dislike HG101 for how shallow their articles are.
Nice job on having such a comprehensive site, Melf. I admit I haven't read a whole lot of it, sorry to say, but I do like what I've read.
Yeah. They do a good job at providing more flavor and screenshots than a Wikipedia article, but most of their articles don't offer much more than that and can get pretty bad when they start to dabble in criticism based on really surface-level stuff (stuff you'd get from booting up a few emulators and skimming a whole franchise over the course of a day or two).Quote:

It doesn't seem to be the newest version anyway.
Eidolonn's Inn was always considered the emulator's home page and has postings by the author himself. Is there a newer version than 3.64 that I haven't seen?
No, I just didn't see the other download page with the other versions.
Which one is better? I have 3.64 now, but it doesn't work in fullscreen mode for me since upgrading to windows 8.
Speaking of all of this Genesis, I had no idea THIS existed...
http://www.readonlymemory.vg/sega-me...ollected-works
Time to pre-order, methinks.
I question any Sega related book that doesn't list Melf or Sega-16 as a reference.
This is what I was hoping to determine.
I don't know if I'll be referenced or not, but I did an interview of around 18 questions for that Collected Works book. Blake Harris also used Sega-16 as a reference for his Console Wars book. He thanked me via email, but the publisher cut his reference page from the final version. :(
I'm surprised that's legal.
I saw this linked on Tiny Cartridge. Figured people in this thread would enjoy. It's about all of those lost levels from Sonic games and a journalist that's met Yuji Naka a whole bunch of times.
http://www.theatlantic.com/technolog...levels/373925/
I didn't know the Android version of Sonic 2 has one of the lost levels! Thanks for sharing that article, it was a good read.
Yeah, that game plays perfectly sideloaded on the OUYA as well.
I normally like the Retronauts podcast, but the Genesis/Mega Drive one was just so painful to listen to I had to stop halfway through. I understand their stated Nintendo bias, but shit, they got so many basic things wrong.
"The first Street Fighter on Genesis was Super, right?"
"Oh yeah, the Sega CD only had a handful of good games on it. It was the first with FMV."
Am I just old and crotchety now?
Nope. You have no business having an inaccurately named podcast if you don't know the basic facts of the content your title incorrectly covers.
The truly sad thing is that the Genesis was as mainstream as it gets. Imagine what they know about the Turbo or Neo.
The Neo Geo one was five nerds talking over each other about not knowing anything about the Neo Geo. I'm fucking serious.
Sometimes they're really informative. But when their biases come out, it's just infuriating. Nintendo wasn't the centre of the universe.
Sadly, every video game site is like that now. Every time IGN and GameSpot do "best XX of all-time" features, they're always dominated by Nintendo games.
I have less of a problem with bias than I do with black and white ignorance, although the latter admittedly likely lead to the former.
Remember, one of the guys on the podcast (every so often) is the guy begging people for money so he can be a "video game historian" and keep his blog going.
Now you're just making me physically ill.
You're 100% right, Brisco. I've been bitching about it for a while. I can understand someone not knowing much about super niche stuff like 3DO or FM Towns or whatever but Genesis? Fucking Genesis?
Shane Bettenhausen was the best well-rounded guy they had and he hasn't been there in the Kickstarter version. Bob Mackey is absolutely the worst.
I've been making fun of Parish's patreon thing for a while, too. Pay me for the equivalent of doodling in my spare time!
I don't mind a group of friends talking about something and not knowing everything about it because that was never promised. These guys do panels at game conventions and come off as experts when they actually know and have played less than most of us here.
