The Ten best Action Platformers of all time

I've been playing tons of Mega Man lately via the Anniversary Collection, and I'd forgotten just how much I love 2d action platformers. I started thinking about which ones were the best ever, and I've narrowed it down to these 10 in no particular order:

Gunstar Heroes
Viewtiful Joe
Contra: Hard Corps
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Ristar
Aladdin (Genesis)
Vectorman
Sonic 1
Strider
Shinobi 3


I can't bring myself to single out a Mega Man game, since they're all great and feel the same so I guess you can count them as one big game. What are your 10 all time favorite 2d Action platformers?

I'm a Castlevania whore and partial to most of that series, if you want a pure action, level-based Castlevania, Rondo of Blood is up there, as is Castlevania III and Super Castlevania IV (ooh the music...).

Contra III: The Alien Wars came to mind after reading Hard Corps on there.

Super Metroid (does this count as a platform game?)
Bionic Commando

Ooh Bionic Commando, good call. That's definitely in my top 10.

And if Super Metroid counts, then I'd add Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow, or at least one of those. Metroidvania is great.

NoFace: You're right, Sonic doesn't belong there either. I guess it just felt more action oriented because of the speed but yeah, it's not really an action platformer.

I always thought Revenge of Shinobi was overrated, because it's perpetually brought up as the definitive Shinobi game wheras Shinobi 3 is the better game and an all time classic IMO.

I also think the SNES Konami games (Castlevania and Contra) are overrated, they're fantastic games but I think their Genesis counterparts are better. I think they're overrated because they came out so much earlier and blew everyone away with the scaling/rotation and music.

I thought about the NES Batman, I loved that game even though I could never beat it (even with a game genie). I almost named Bionic Commando, except I wasn't sure if it qualified considering there's no jump button but what the hell, it's an awesome game so it counts. I forgot about Rolling Thunder 3, that game ruled. Some other games I thought about: Ranger X, Comix Zone, Splatterhouse 2/3, Blackthorne, Code Name Viper, Sunset Riders (all of them), the Xmen games on Genesis, Super Star Wars games, Greendog, Midnight Resistance, Robocop vs. Terminator, Predator on NES (I loved that game as a kid), Blaster Master, and one I can't believe I forgot about, one of my all time favorite games, Street Fighter 2010 on NES!

This thread plus Melf's new Genesis site has made it painfully clear that I need to go play Revenge of Shinobi, something I've never done. I never see anything bad said about that game... so I'll make a point to play it sometime this week, I wonder how it holds up without any nostalgia value.

NoFace: Have you ever played Shinobi 3? I don't understand why it's not more celebrated, it's not only the best Shinobi ever but it's one of the best games ever

damn, i wish i got my genny earlier, instead of two years ago.

You should pick up the Genesis version of Alladin. Its a totally different game from the SNES game. It does everything better. The SNES game is ok, but definitely go for the Genesis version. Since you got your Genesis 2 years ago and missed out on so much, I reccoment starting there.

How the fuck does someone make a platformer list without Sonic CD or Yoshi's Island on it?

Ok, the arcade TMNT games are not action platformers. Just stop it.

Genesis and SNES Aladdin's are completely different games in every way, and are both worth playing.

SNES Sparkster is the sequel to the Genesis Rocket Knight Adventures. So play both of those, too.

If you'd read the thread, they'd deemed that Mario and Sonic games ARE NOT action platformers. Hey, don't look at me, I didn't say it.

But I think Yoshi's Island should definitely qualify for the thread.

all in no order but I do think Ghosts 'n' Goblins would be #1. Talk about hard as hell, great enemy and level design, nice but succinct weapon system, and just straight up action.

I was also fond of RC vs. Terminator on Genisis (back in the ultra-violent sega vs. goody-two-shoes nintendo days).

Doc: Glad to see I'm not the only one, I loved RoboCop vs. Terminator

Kuro: The snes version of Aladdin was good, but the Genny version was a masterpiece. Even today it's amazing looking. Definately jump on that one, and also run out and get Gunstar Heroes for Genesis. While you're at it, forget about the NES version of Strider and go get the Genesis version, it's the real game. Playing Genny Aladdin, Gunstar Heroes and Strider for the first time will make you happy to be alive. Another must own Genesis game is Ristar, it's more of a pure platformer than an action platformer but it's up there with Sonic and Mario. Get Zombies Ate My Neighbors too, both the SNES and Genesis versions are great, it's not an action platformer but it's an incredibly fun B-movie style top down action game that went under most people's radars.

The Genesis Castlevania game is extremely underrated, it's like an NES Castlevania game on steroids. No 8 way whip, pure old school Castlevania. 2 different characters with branching paths. The first level is actually a remake of the first level in Castlevania 1. Genesis Contra was also awesome, but very different from Alien Wars on SNES. It was a LOT more challenging, had 4 different characters, branching paths, multiple endings, and more boss fights. Sparkster is Rocket Knight Adventures 2, both 1 and 2 are on both systems although the game was originally a Genesis exclusive. The Genesis versions have tighter gameplay, SNES versions have richer colors.

Yeah, and Dracula X is all that done 100 times better. And since we're talking best of the best, Drac X beats Bloodlines.

Does anyone remember that Capcom wrestling game, I forget the name of it but it was on Genesis and it had Haggar in it? Digita1's avatar just made me think of it out of nowhere, I loved that game. I rented it once and that was the only time I ever saw or heard about it before or since....

Saturday Night Slam Masters. :D I actually came across and bought the SNES version recently, but the slowdown really kills it. I was lucky enough to find an old 4-player arcade cabinet of it at a campground not too long ago, which is obviously the definative version. They also made a sequel that as far as I know never came to consoles, but it plays completely different. Instead of being able to roam around in the ring, it was turned into straight side-scrolling a la SF, pretty much rendering it a 2D fighter. Not horribly bad, but nowhere near as good as the first. The arcade roms are pretty easy to come across...

I don't have much of a list, but Gunstar Heroes, Yoshi's Island, and Ghosts n' Goblins would be on there.

That's it! Saturday Night Slam Masters! I'm not suprised the SNES version had slowdown, I don't recall the Genesis version having much trouble with slowdown although it has been over 10 years since I played it....

All these different platformer definitions are confusing.

Here are mine not including mascot/cutesy stuff or more adventure-oriented stuff(Metroid, SoTN, ActRaiser) and only taking one game from a series-

1. Shinobi III - Better than Revenge in almost every way and easily the best ninja game ever.

2. Dracula X - No other traditional Castlevania game compares.

3. Gunstar Heroes - The most unique and well designed run 'n gun game.

4. Kenseiden - I suppose the non-linear nature makes it borderline adventure-oriented but I think it fits here. It's superior to its closest rivals, the NES Castlevanias.

5. Strider

6. Ghouls 'n Ghosts - Megaman's good but Strider and Ghouls are definitely Capcom's best platformers.

7. Contra III - The top of this series. Hard Corps is close.

8. Ninja Gaiden 1 or 2 - I can't pick between these two. After Shinobi, these are my favourite 8-bit ninja games.

9. Alien 3(Genesis) - Kick ass Euro action.

10. Ninja Spirit

Dracula X is only available as an import TurboDuo game right? (not including the SNES one, which sucked)

Which Ghouls N' Ghosts game are you referring to?

Are you talking about the American Alien 3, I was under the impression they were all the same?

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is definitely very good and I'd likely include it in my list except I was trying to avoid more than one per franchise. But I always found Ghosts'n'Goblins to be more pure. It's like they got the formula perfect the first time and everything afterwards just added needless stuff on top.

Yes, it was released in North America. By "Euro" I meant European developed. The Genesis one is a different game than the SNES one although they're similar.

Yup...I think I can confidently stand by that list. Although I might consider replacing Sillouette Mirage with Earthworm Jim 2 SNES depending on the alighnment of the moon and other random factors.

Yes on both counts. Entirely different games from top to bottom. Controll, maps, sprites, sound...everything.

The widely popular oppinion is the Genny Alladin is better....I'd have to agree.

My personal opinion is that Sparkster (the SNES version of Rocket Knight) is better. In fact, I love Sparkster. One of those games that does everything right.

Damn, I'm so not knowledgable about old school Shinobi that I thought Revenge of Shinobi = Shinobi III. Neither of which I've played. So I guess I'll try Shinobi III this week instead of revenge, since that's really the one people seem to rave about.

After seeing Cheebs put up Maximo, I'd consider Ratchet and Clank 2. Maximo is definitely much more pure, and closer to the games mentioned, but as far as 3D platformers go, Ratchet and Clank is very action oriented I'd say (and it's good too, you damn haters :p)

Call me insane than, because I think Bloodlines BLOWS AWAY SC IV. The first time I played through SC IV I was blown away by the graphics, but underwhelmed by the game itself. The mode 7 rotation was cool as hell, but that doesn't make it a great game. Not to mention those fucked up boss names, Paula Abghoul and Fred Ascare?!!? :wtf: Cool game, but one of my least favorite of the series. The best pure CV game obviously belongs to Dracula X. Anyone who has played it, knows why.

Here is my list-

1.Contra HC-easily the best in the series and my all time favorite run and gun game.
2.Ghosts and Goblins/Super GnG-I have these 2 tied. I love Ghouls and Ghosts but I found it too easy.
3.MegaMan 3-Most say 2 is the best, I say 3
4.Legendary Axe-I don't think this game ever got its due.
5.Gunstar Heroes
6.Ninja Five-O -What a great fucking game. A must for all action/shooter fans
7.Dracula X/Castlevania III-After typing all that at the top, I couldn't pick DX over CV III. :confused:
8.Splatterhouse-Just a really fun game
9.Sin and Punishment-Does this count?
10.Actraiser 2-I think there is a lot of hate for this game, but I loved it! Hard as hell!

I agree with Spodaddy(holy shit, we agree on something ;) )about the Genny Konami games owning the SNES ones. Although I think Contra III is closer to Contra HC than Super Castlevania IV is to Bloodlines. CV Bloodlines is just the way Castlevania should be IMO.

I also want to add a runner up: Bravoman for the Turbografx. It was a weird MegaMan horizontal shooter hybrid that most people didn't get.

Gunstar Heroes is number one for me, then probably MSX. If I thought Yoshi's Island was an AP, it would win.

No air control or speed variation is garbage-y. I still quite liked the game, but I had much more fun playing Maximo (the first one anyway, the second is OK too).

Why wouldn't you count Yoshi's Island, Joust? I think it's more action-oriented than the standard Mario games, which I think should count anyway...

I'm sure this isn't what I was talking about. I'm possitive that I saw MSC 2 in EGM for NES using the same sprites and all. It was in an emulation article and it mentioned the patch. I'll keep searching, but at least this sounds really good.

I'm pretty sure there wasn't a Milon sequel on NES. There was a Game Boy Milon game although I think it's a port of the NES game.

It's been what, 13 years since Castlevania 4 and I STILL don't understand why everyone loves it so much. It had awesome music and great effects, but as a game it wasn't anything special and the 8 way whip took away from the classic feel. Someone please explain to me how Bloodlines isn't the better game, it's got far more interesting level design, branching paths, 2 main characters, far more challenging and old school gameplay, and a perfectly gritty look to it.

Today I picked up 2 new action platformery games:
Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi for Genesis
Kirby's Dream Land 3 for SNES

Never played either one before, aside from Secret of Shinobi briefly almost 15 years ago (It was cool back then), are they any good?

Sorry, but the music alone is almost enough to carry that game past Bloodlines. The tunes are just that good... Combine that with the awesome game attached to the music, and it's damn near unbeatable. And yes, it feels different with the 8-way whip. No, that's not a bad thing. I like the new play mechanic.

All of this is keeping in mind that Bloodlines compleatly rules. It's just that IV is godly.

I'm starting to think you're right! I'm possitive that EGM ran that article with the news of an NES sequel I was talking about though. They must have confused it with the SNES game that has a patch I'll just get the SNES game, chalk up MSC 2 on NES as piss poor jurnalism and be done with it.

Cheebs, I have no hate for you bro, but GnG too hard?!?! You just didn't try enough. ;) I also disagree about CV IV. Spodaddy nailed it on the head when he spoke about its level design. I thought it was the weakest of the CV bunch.

I'm gonna go with the Jak series as a Trilogy...and though Jak 3 is not out yet, the series doesn't disappoint for me, and though I'm sure it doesn't fall into your criterion, I rather don't like platformers(something I only recently realized), but yet I find the Jak series to be quite fun...

Super Metroid - the best game ever made.
Earthworm Jim - Definitely.
Rayman - bitterly hard and so beautiful. I definitely think its one of the best

Thats all I can think of. I dont like Shinobi, dont like most Castlevania, dont like Ghouls N' Ghosts, etc.

I always give Landstalker the best game ever made, but then I think of Super Metroid and I can't say Landstalker is better so it's tied for the crown. What a great fucking game. I didn't put that on my list because that seems more of an adventure game.
