Elevator Usage

This is going to sound really stupid, but I need to know.

I'm wondering if there might be something wrong with people whenever I use an elevator. It doesn't matter where I am, it appears that the behavior of any random person is incredibly strange when comes to entering and exiting elevators. As a result of this, I wanted to see what you folks on TNL do when you use an elevator to see if I'm the weirdo or if these strange people I keep seeing really are strange.

As an example, I get on an elevator after the door has fully opened and after I've checked to see if it is going up or down and if that's the direction I'm going. When I get off of an elevator, I do so after the door has fully opened and I make sure that I'm on the correct floor.

I've noticed that everyone else, including my girlfriend, uses elevators as follows:

A random person rushes into the elevator, looking at the floor, as the door is opening and does not seem concerned whether the elevator is going up or down. That same random person will exit the elevator, floor in view, as soon as it stops and the door begins opening, even if it is not the correct floor they were going to. This invariably leads to waiting for the elevator to go in the opposite direction desired, bumping into people, getting off at the wrong floor and then looking like a fool when turning around and heading back into the elevator.

What's up with that?

what kind of crazy elevators are you using that make it difficult to tell which direction it's going in? i mean, the arrow always flashes before the doors open.

I don't use elevators at all. Don't trust 'em. I'm a :chick: shit.

Yes, people are fucking idiots when it comes to elevators. Here are some guidelines:

- Press the call button ONCE, and the elevator will stop at your floor when it is headed in your desired direction. If it is lit up, there is no need to press it again. If it turns off while you're waiting, that means the elevator is here and the door will open within milliseconds. Don't press it again, you tool.

- The door close button makes the elevator door close faster. Not a numbered floor button. So stop stabbing at it.

- When an elevator opens, WAIT to make sure no one is leaving it. THEY have the right of way, not you. Fuck.

Doesn't it light up the floor number that the elevator is currently on? Silly people, you all should be using the stairs anyway.

They locked the bottom stairs entrance so the hoboes couldn't get in... and I'm not riding up one floor to get off and use the stairs =(

Every elevator I've seen has those arrows. I'm saying that people aren't LOOKING at the arrows. It's almost as though they're afraid of the elevator.

I can't use the stairs in most buildings here in LA - stair access is usually employees only. For instance, all stairway doors are alarmed in my apartment. The only time they're not alarmed is during a fire. :\

Elevators are bad news anyway. I've seen a lot of movies lately where something fucked up happens in an elevator like it explodes/crashes/gets taken over by aliens.

The stairs are safer as long as rotten kids don't leave shit lying around them for people to trip and break their neck. Regardless, elevator etiquette is at an all time low.

I say we ban elevators. Of course the people stuck in wheelchairs will start crying but eh..I figure we just push them off a bridge or something...Nevermind.

Teh whole problem is because people have no social skills in small areas.
Everyone is afraid to talk to someone they dont know at that close of a range these days, some dont even want to look at the person because that might bring on pleasent "hello" and we don;t want that now do we ?

When you find someone with people skills they will not use a elevator like a moron, they will do it right. :D

Actually, it is statistically safer to use an elevator than walk a flight of stairs.

I think I remember this from an epsiode of "The Secret Life of Machines", because I can't find a specific link to verify it now...

Another guideline to people who get on elevators:

When the elevator is on the very last floor in a building such as the basement, don't ask, "Going up?". You fuckin' called the damn thing down from the lobby! How far down can it go than the basement, asshole? :mad:

There has only been one elevator that has fallen to the ground floor since they were created over a hundred years ago.

I saw it on TV, so it must be true.

Best idea..just make everyone live/work/do anything in one floor sized buildings. Then we could commission someone to destroy the mountains and the cliffs and anything that could be fallen off of so that way we live in a complete flat world.

After that we drive the sharks to extinction so they stop eating the limbs of surfers.
