I've been playing again as a science/sneak/lockpick character.
Even with gun skills in the 20s I can dominate with any firearm. Sure I miss more than my other character (with maxed small guns) but the weapons, even the big guns like the fatman, are deadly.
The skills and the effectiveness of items that use them should curve more steeply. IIRC the first Fallout made it nearly impossible to kill something when your skill with the weapon was low (emerging from the vault and getting killed by rats because you can't hit one with your gun and are too stupid to use the knife).
Hell, when in a pinch I have trouble NOT selecting the assault rifle and mowing things down. I have to dump the guns (excepting the 10mm pistol) to make it SEEM like I can't use them. Lame. If I wanted to imagine I was helpless with a weapon I'd play a stupid PNP game.
I still <3 it though. Fun as hell to just kill people who annoy you after playing as a goodie-good the first time.
I just fucked up the Enclave at Raven Rock. I think I'm near the end. I realize that the ending sucks according to everyone, but I don't get the complaints about the story. I worked on the main quest for about 6 hours today and couldn't put it down. The story is great.
I'm not sure if I should beat the game and then play more side quests from a save file or hold off on the ending till I feel like I've done all I'm going to do in the rest of it.
You'll see.
1) it's really, really short if you just do the main quest.
2) the ending really sucks.
You can't play more after the ending. Split your saves.
The game makes a hard save for you before the point of no return. No worries.
I'm kind of glad I didn't buy this game after reading through it. Lame dialogue and a bland world deflates the Fallout-ness of the game. I'll probably try it next year whenever the price drops significantly. With a world of gray and brown you really need to make your characters and dialogue be centre-stage. And without that I know I'd just be bored stiff. They dropped SPECIAL too, I guess to simplify the world for console gamers. I'm so conflicted.
