Yeah, I'm just asking for anyone's opinion if they've done this. Orange Box exists on the 360 but that doesn't say much for it playing well with a controller. Just trying to find any personal confirmation of this game not being terrible with a controller+PC setup, I guess.
keyboard and mouse control is garbage, i have no idea how anyone can like that shit

If the game plays fine on the 360 then it plays fine on the PC with the 360 controller.
I think you are confused about the things you have heard. First off, the 360 pad is about the best controller you can get to use with a PC. I own them and I don't even have a 360, because it makes using a controller to play old roms easy. The actual "problems" with the controller for PC have nothing to do with the controller itself. They are that 1. Certain genres suck with a controller, ie FPSers. This is obviously not a problem with this game. 2. Many Live for Windows games that are 360 ports assume you have the controller and either have no support for mouse/keyboard or have a shitty thrown together scheme for them. This is only a problem if you don't have the controller.
You people get feisty about this. Thanks for the info though. I had asked friends about playing other games (such as Orange Box) on PC+360 pad and was vehemently told no, that's all. Glad to hear it doesn't translate like that for this game.
Bought this yesterday, took it home to try it out, ended up playing for seven hours. It's been a long, long time since this has happened for me with a new game.
The moment I emerged from the Vault to see the wasteland for the first time is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a game - both for how it looked and what it meant. I screwed up with the autosave in Megaton and had to start the town over, and despite my efforts to play it the same way, everything turned out completely differently; it was a joy rather than an annoyance.
F3 reminds me a lot of my beloved Deus Ex, and it also reminds me of Bioshock, Metroid, and GTA3, and it even brings back some memories of Shenmue (I got my own house in Megaton to decorate!).
What I like most about the game is the unexpectedness. I thought the Blood Ties subquest would be no big deal when it started, but it ended up being one of the most interesting and surprising missions I've ever played. I never know what's going to happen next and what I might find over the next hill, and it's this feeling that keeps me going.
It's not a perfect game, by any means. The combat is kind of clunky, even with the coolness of VATS. The inventory system isn't designed particularly well. The game doesn't run especially smoothly - I see a lot of tearing at the top of the screen, and the animation is nothing special. I've gotten stuck on the landscape, and once fell through the floor of a freeway overpass to my death. The environments are indeed repetitive.
But all of these are minor when compared to how well the world is put together, and how much freedom you have in it. The experience of being in the world carries far more weight than the tech issues.
It's not really about the thrill of combat for me, nor the RPG grind of levelling up and gaining experience. Fallout 3 is a constant process of discovery, and one that's completely intoxicating (and I have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic sagas anyway). In spite of its shortcomings, this is the best game I've played since Metroid Prime.
