i have about 30hrs into this game already
... no
Ban plz.
Next your going to say you never played Planescape either.
I think the game is down right amazing and I absolutely love it, I loved Oblivion like no other and this game is beginning to steal it's throne.
But on that note I dunno what to really say about it, because most people on TNL find a way to hate most things I think are awesome.
Anyway the game has a very gray/brown tone to it, but if you think about it, it totally makes sense being that this world takes place after a Nuclear holocaust
Why do that when I can play Fallout 3?
Well if we're talking Planescape, then you would do that because it's the greatest RPG ever made.
As for Fallout 1 and 2, I have no idea if 3 is better than them.
right now im just over 32hrs into the game and the only reason I'm stopping is because i have to go to work in an hour, i didn't even go to bed lol. Today is going to be an interesting day i bet ya
Fallout 3's inventory is usable enough. There's one master item list, and sorted lists according to type of item - weapon, ammo, healing, and so on. The only thing I kinda don't like is that the lists aren't then arranged by item types, but names. It's only annoying when you have a Combat Shotgun and not even realize you have a Sawed-Off Shotgun to boot, all the way at the bottom of the list.
You'd have to be looking real hard for faults in this game. Even then they aren't bad enough to ruin the experience.
Played another 5 hours straight and got ti Rivet City! More and more I feel like a pioneer on the rugged frontier
I seem to be on pace with Hero.
Didn't fuck around in Rivet City, talked to Dr. Li to get my next objective. Put your walking shoes on, you've got a hike ahead of you.
Also, did anybody get to the Museum of Technology? I wanted to do the quest for Three-dog but couldn't find a way to it
I'm getting this on Friday and the Phillies may very well win the World Series this week. This is the best week of my life ever and it just started.
Jesus Christ is that sad.
Our lord savior is not sad.
If the gateway to hell wins the World Series, the baby Jesus is going to need therapy.
Think of the bright side, after WS win and subsequent burning, there might not be a Philadelphia left.
dude how sweet was Rivet Town? I love that place, I seriously spent like 2 hours in there just wandering around
Yeah I did this quest already, it was really cool to visit the Washington Memorial, you have to go through a subway area to find your way to the Museum. I'm finding this a lot in the game, that to get to most places you have to travel underground. Thank the heavens for Fast Traveling!!
Woo!!! Finally on it's way!!

Travelling the Metro is brilliant. At first I was off-put that the whole overworld can't be accessed by hiking. Then again, forcing you into stressful situations like cramped corners and no fast travel retreating takes up pace.
I've decided to go ahead and pick it up tonight. However, I have a feeling that my plan to just pick it up tonight so I don't have to on my way home tomorrow will end up with me playing all night and feeling like shit tomorrow during classes. Oh well. Fallout 3 is much more important than general ed.
tru dat!
Blockbuster never has anything in stock to rent, I'm thinking of doing a short-term gamefly sub just to play all the holiday releases.
I'm really sick of buying games that I only play once and then having it sit on the shelf...like Fable 1.
In fact..I just did it. I shouldn't have but NGII on my list though, I bet I'm not going to see any of these new games, but instead just receive NGII.
why not sell off your old games instead of pouting?
Spoke with Li, learned about Dad, and now I have to go to the labs. However the objective to hit GNR is gone completely. Did I circumnavigate a part of the game, or was Moriarty lying to me this whole time? If it's the latter, methinks an ass whooping is in order...
Has anyone heard of any major differences between the PS3 & Xbox versions? I usually go with xbox for multiplatform stuff, but with no online modes and the sneaking suspicion that my 360 is gonna shit the bed soon, the PS3 is starting to look better.
Reports are that the PS3 version actually does not look quite as good as the 360 version, but the differences aren't too bad.

PSM3 explains 'Fallout 3 looks poor on PS3' comment

The internet is a big and scary place. People can twist your words in any which way they like. In fact, someone somewhere is twisting this sentence right now. So, when the internet population caught whiff of Euro mag PSM3's Fallout 3 review, surely the quote "The PS3 version compares poorly to its Xbox and PC counterparts" was interpreted in a myriad of ways -- some more sensational than the next.
However, PSM3 wants to set the record straight as to what it meant by that statement. The mag says "the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox," but goes on to explain a laundry list of differences such as the PS3 version having slightly rougher draw distances, 'muddier' up-close textures and choppier frame rate. PSM3 says this disparity is minute and "won't hamper your enjoyment of the game in any way." Says PSM3, " ... it's still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure."
Well, there you go. Anyone worried about seeing an incredibly broken version should rest easy now. Fallout 3 comes out next Tuesday, October 28.
Ahhh, reading this thread has sufficiently stroked my game boner up to enormous proportions. Thanks to all those who posted their impressions of playing. I can't wait to plunge into my copy tomorrow. And by "plunge into my copy", I mean I'm going to lube up the disc and fuck it.
Man I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow. It's gonna make the work day go by insanely slow though. I wish this wasn't coming out so soon after Fable 2 as said game is gonna have to go on the backburner once I get Fallout 3.
He admitted that he is of Asian descent.
Admittedly, I just beat TNL at it's own game. I twisted my own words before TNL could.
Seriously thinking about picking this up at midnight. The best buy me is throwing a midnight opening. That's weird though, I didnt think this game was big enough to warrant a midnight launch.
The Tranquility Lounger in Vault 112 is so fucking rad!
Yeah see when I went and did the GNR quest 3-dawg told me to go to rivet city and talk to Dr. Li, you might've actually skipped that quest by going to Li first. Oh and as shady as Moriarty seems, he is actually legit. Go back to Megaton, *SAVE* then go kill him and hack his personal PC in the back and he has a file on your pops, turns out everything he said is the truth. Then make sure to just re-load your game and all is well, I've been doing that a lot lately :)
Where did you find that Vault at? and dude have you been to Vault 106 yet? it's kinda crazy

You may or may not be able to use advanced Script Extender type of Mods on the Direct2Drive download, or the Steam version. If you want to gurantee full mod compatibilty, then you need to get the Retail PC version for that. Mods that do not require script enhancements will more than likely work on the Steam/D2D versions of the game. This is because the D2D version will probably be an Encrypted EXE, and the Steam version will change some code and the way it launches. Further news on this will have to wait until more information is availble, or the mod community has worked their magic.
Note, this is not to say that there will be a Construction Set, this is still not known at this time.
(There's a CD check for the retail PC release)
Who in the hell develops a modding implementation that would be ruined by digital distribution?
I guess no one is sure of this yet, but would it be possible to use those fully-featured mods with a cracked (noCD) retail release?
Elkino, tell me how to get to 106. I wanna check that place out.
Must...leave....work...to....play...Fallout....
I'm pretty disappointed that all the reviews (and the evidence in the videos) describe the character animation and models being relatively poor. You'd think with a huge blockbuster like this, these things would eventually get cleaned up. It sounds like the 3rd-person has the same hacky implementation as Oblivion, even.
For the people that are playing it, does it eventually just become transparent, or are you repeatedly brought out of the moment by it?
Debating whether or not to pick this up for the PC or the 360. Mods sound fun and the game just seems meant for PC, but at the same time I'd like the comfort of sitting and playing it on my TV if the differences are minimal.
Anyone have it for PC and thinks it couldn't be played any other way?
The neat thing about a PC is that you can play it however and wherever you want, provided you spend the time and money to set it up.
Always go PC unless the port is shit (which this isn't) or TNL is all over Zboz Live.
I'm downloading it now, so I can't speak from experience yet. However, since this is Windows Live enabled, you can even get the achievements in the PC version. That really boils it all down to your couch versus better visuals, more options, mods, etc.
edit: And Ed summed it up.
I read that the pc version of the game may use a new version of Live. I won't get my copy until thursday so I can't check myself. Please post impressions regarding performance and all that. That goes for anyone here getting the pc version.
As for better visuals versus couch..well.. I use my 32in hdtv as my monitor so I have the best of both worlds..yay. Granted its only 1366x768 res but whatever.
I'm getting more tempted to move my PC a few feet to use my HDTV instead of my monitor as well. I need to get more furniture for my office. When I do, I'm pulling the trigger.
It's a good idea to run the second monitor port out to the entertainment center.
One advantage of buying the 360 version is that you will speed up the RROD. Since it is inevitable, you might as well get it out of the way. That's why I am going with the 360.
WOO shipping to me from gamefly today!
I Played for about 4-5 hours last night, and this is really only one of things I have a problem with. Melee combat just seems a bit wonky, at least this early on. It is really slow and most of the time doesn't feel like you are doing any damage until the enemy finally goes down. Though this could certainly change with a higher melee level. A review stated, and I noticed this as well that sometimes you can shoot an enemy in the head yet they just keep on trucking. Once again though, this could all be remedied later by just leveling up.
I'm looking forward to just sitting down and getting immersed in this tonight ad tomorrow. From what I've played so far, it is definitely a great experience. I loved the intro with growing up in the vault. Really gives you the feeling of what it is like to live in one of those and then the shock of getting out into the real world.
I'm just a little overwhelmed right now, and there is just so much to explore and I'm still trying to figure out how the whole repairing system works, as well as hacking and then what pieces of scrap to keep and which ones to leave. Main mission isn't even a part of the equation right now as I just want to explore and figure everything out.
I've really only been to a couple of different areas. Does the world vary at all, or is it pretty much just wasteland and messed up cities? Thats fine if it is, as it fits with the main focus and story of the game, but one of my favorite things about Oblivion was exploring all the completely different areas of the map.

You're one of IGN's biggest haters and you have an insider account there? ;)
Not surprising that PC is best. I call bullshit on the two console versions being tied for control as the 360 controller is better for anything with aiming involved. I was going to buy this day one for 360 but since I might get a new PC soon, I'll painfully wait for now.
I knew that comment was coming. I got the package deal where you get the FilePlanet sub and they basically give away the IGN part. It's nice for HD videos.
Why is this installing so slow? The agony!
And the lunchbox is cool if a bit silly but the bobble-head seems kinda cheap (yeah, yeah I know, wtf, lol, etc).
Bought it today. I have to finish Yakuza 2 before I can play it... but the temptation is so fucking fierce.
I got it, started it, and my 360 died on me. That's two consoles in two years!
I can wear Power Armor now, the only one I have is Enclave though lolol
Meh - it's about on par with or slightly better than Oblivion, and I'm fine with that. Considering that the animation doesn't get weird until close-up melee ensues, I'm ok. Not to mention the VATS kills are pretty damn fun to watch
Was fleeing from the Purity Project and blew off some Ghoul heads at the same time a Brotherhood member blew up some with a flamer. It was pretty sweet to watch
I also enjoy that not all enemies follow the "shoot and run at you til you're dead" AI philosophy. After taking out an enemy's leg, it actually hobbled behind a wall and tried to flank me from the side. Which in turn, made have a high Perception all the more sweet.
I can't put this god damn game down! Every time I say I'm going to stop playing I end up stumbling across some other quest and am like "ok, let me just go and do this one real quick". Next thing I know 5 more locations pop up on my map and I end up wanting to go to all of those too.
This game has really fixed the main things that bothered me about Oblivion. First is the complete lack of direction Oblivion gave you. Even though I have spent 5 hours doing everything besides the main quest, I know exactly what I'm supposed to do when and if I want to do it. The other part is that I actually felt attached to my character and the world I was place into because of the introduction and how they set up your character and his/her situation. Very cool, and very interesting set up.
The gameplay itself is fantastic. I love the VATS system. Using VATS and managing my AP in combination with using the real time combat system has created some awesome and tense battles. Specifically, me just stomping out 3 Super Mutants that ambushed me on my way to investigate some kidnapped idiots.. They seemed to have streamlined the menu system slightly, and integrated it into your little watch gadget seems to work very well. It's still not perfect, or great, but it works, and gets the job done.
I spent 4 hours just wandering around the environment and doing quests in Megaton, I think it's about time for me to branch out and starting moving elsewhere in the world. My 2 concerns that will hopefully be alleviated later on, which are the same as Cap's, are that the environments do become more varied and not just strictly barren drab (but beautiful!) wastelands. And that melee combat feels more solid the more you improve your skills.
I am seriously thinking about picking this up.
I only have like two weeks until Lich though. Maybe I should wait until we get to the weekly Naxx runs.
Ok dudes, what the fuck, I am not having any fun with this game. Am I playing it wrong? I realize that's a dumb question, but seriously. I'm playing on the 360 btw.
The controls fucking suck. You can't play this like a first person shooter, which I sort of expected, but still. It's first person and I'm holding a gun, my brain is automatically in FPS mode.
The VATS seems like a system Bethesda made up just to compensate for the shitty real time aiming. That sucks. It's cool and all, but I'd rather just aim my gun and blow off limbs in real time, ala Dead Space.
And what is the point of the VATS? I shoot the enemy's legs and he still comes after me, I blow up his gun and he pulls out another one, etc etc. It seems like the only useful place to aim in VATS is at his head. I'm sure I'm doing it wrong but I can't figure it out. My mutant battles usually go something like this...I go into VATS and shoot 5 times at his head draining half his health and using up all my AP, then I fire haphazardly at the enemy until he dies or I die. It's absolutely pathetic to watch.
I don't think they give you enough health or ammo.
I FUCKING hate the subways. Enough with them already. I need to get from point A to point B. SUBWAY. From point B to point D. SUBWAY. From point D back to point A. FUCKING SUBWAY. I'm so sick of looking at those dark, grey subways...I hope this changes later in the game.
The world isn't pleasant. Once again, I didn't expect it to be sunshine and roses, but it's just really depressing looking at grey craggy rocks all the time. The draw distance is impressive, but all you can see for miles is grey boulders. The wrecked towns and the outdoor sections of DC are really cool though.
The characters are absolutely lifeless. They look like plastic action figures with exactly one facial expression. I really notice it after coming from Fable II, which did a really nice job of giving their characters lively faces. Fallout 3's character models just don't cut it in 2008, compared to other high profile games like GTA IV, as another example.
The inventory system sucks. I'm glad they added hot keys, but the inventory still sucks. Same as it did in Oblivion, same as it did in Morrowind. And speaking of shit that hasn't changed since Morrowind, what the fuck is up with the character animations still looking like ass?
Bethesda is really, really good at making great big interesting worlds. I think the one in Fallout 3 is really cool, it's just the game surrounding it that I think could be better. At least the story hooks you within the first hour unlike any of their previous games.
So I dunno, I guess I'm gonna stick with it. But after playing for 5 or 6 hours, the combat is getting more frustrating than fun and the environments are really starting to become tiresome (FUCKING SUBWAYS).
Anyone else feel this way? Or am I the only one and I'm way off base? I seriously think I must be playing it wrong or something because I really haven't heard anything negative about the game.
EDIT: One of my favorite things about the game is actually the character editor. It had more mustache choices in it than any other character editor I've ever used. Kudos to Bethesda and their mutual love of mustaches. I appreciate that.
For example though, I felt that Mass Effect did this style of combat much better. There was a lot of pausing the action in Mass Effect (same as in Fallout 3), and selecting tactics and enemies to attack, and assigning orders to your team, etc. And for some reason I felt like that worked much better than Fallout 3's system (so far).
Mass Effect did it differently. Mass Effect leaned more heavily towards the FPS side, requiring you to pause the action much less, and giving you ass tons of ammo.
Fallout 3 wants you to play it more as an RPG, with much more pausing and also giving you less ammo to make you consider your shots.
That's true, I guess Mass Effect did lean slightly more toward the FPS side. Which maybe would explain why I could grasp it more.
I guess I'm gonna give Fallout 3 another go tomorrow, and just slow my pace down and try to approach it differently than I have. Because I really want to like it. The world/story are fantastic.
From the perspective of the original, the mechanics of Fallout 3 make more sense. So far the game "feels" like Fallout.
And that's a good thing (3 hours in).
I just think Seik bought into the hype and never liked Fallout to begin with, because the Vats makes sense, and tunnels make sense.
Fallout 3 is awesome. Later, off to play some more.
I hated Mass Effect. But I didn't really give it a fair enough shake, I guess. Every time I think about loading it up I just feel fatigued.
Finally got a hang of the VATS tonight. Makes the combat much more enjoyable. Gonna put a shit ton of hours into this tomorrow.
Can you buy ammo in this game or what?
I'm perpetually out of ammo and tired of hunting for boxes.
This is my first Windows LIVE enabled game, and it was very odd getting messages from Razor, seeing people pop on and off-line, and earning achievements in a PC game. I think it's very well done. Playing with the mouse and keyboard instead of the 360 pad makes the Home key take the place of the "X" logo in-game.
I'm liking the game a lot but the lack of color is pretty grating. I completely glossed over Megaton's skyline when I first set foot in the town, but after wandering around a bit I took a look and noticed just how packed with little details it was... it's a superb foundation but the lack of colors other than brown make it extremely easy to miss.
Now look, I understand it's an atomic wasteland and all but... even cavemen found out how to paint. Microwave dinners and spatulas and teddy bears and computers survived the explosions, but nary a can of Sherwin Williams?
"I know our lives are endanger from radiation, mutants, and scavengers, but what do you think about mauve for the bathroom?"
It really sounds like you didn't do any research about this game. Everything sans the lifeless animations are why people WILL buy this game. It's an RPG in a post-apocalyptic world. (world's which don't tend to have a lot of tropical jungles and lush waterfalls around) And it's a hardcore RPG at heart.
More research next time.
Lavender would accent the cabinets better.
Yoshi, do you have the Steam version?
The wife also has the 360 version you fucking hypocrite :)
No she doesn't. That was me online last night on Windows LIVE, bitch. Bioshock is the only game where we played different versions, and we rented the 360 one for her. GTA IV is about to be the first one where we bought both.
FUCK OWNED
Strangely enough, it didn't say Fallout 3 PC, like Gears and Halo 2 did.
Razor could tell somehow. His first message to me was "lol pc".
I love the way this game starts - much better than Oblivions stupid prison escape
Oblivion sucked.
In fact so did every Elder Scrolls game.
