Between Alpha Labs 2 and 3 (im jut now at 3) there was a section where I had about 20 enemies on the screen at once spider creatures
I am running 1280X1024 on High res 2xAA/ 4X AF, Tonight im gonna crank it up to 1600X1200 no AA/8x AF , after some of the above tweaks.
I setup a new rig just last weekend:

Man, the more I play this game, the better it gets. One thing I'm not liking is the stupid spider creatures. They're basically H/L's headcraps but alot more annoying. Don't mind the few enemies at a time approach though. The enviroments are so cramped at times(Thast good) that any more would be pointless. The use of sound effects from the original Dooms(Like the keycard pickup) that made it in are a nice touch too.
This game really comes off like it's gonna be an amazing experience and then get kinda old like Quake 2's singleplayer.
I think you're talking about the Tricks and Traps level (my favorite Doom 2 level). If you are, it was a room packed with Barons of Hell with a Cyberdemon at the far end of it. The reason the invincibility power-up was there was because the door to the room LOCKS when you enter, and the switch to open it is behind the Cyberdemon. :eek:Quote:

Ok, finally picked it up. I went to CC again, and they still didnt have it in, so I wnet ot BB, and it wasnt on any of the shelves. But luckily I looked around the central area and there it was on the huge stand, with like 80% of copies gone.
My new RAM arrived today as well, just in time for it :) I also installed new ATI drivers, and installing D3 as I post here. On the disk 3 now :)
I just found the chaingun (watch out Imps! muhahah) and made it to the Alpha lab. I also did 2 of the config tweaks listed in this thread and it made my framerate a lot smoother. Looks like a stead 30 fps at medium 800x600 (i still have shadows off though).

Basically, Carmack is incredibly pleased with the final result.
And what I care about the most is that the Quake 3 engine will be open-source by the end of the year. As far as WHY I care about that... I'll tell you once something amazing comes of it.
I know I'm pleased with the Results. Carmack seems like a cool guy the way he put his message was just all around mature and keeps me looking forward to whatever else he does.
This month I've played Tales of Symphonia, best GC game (my opinin of course), Doom 3 (All around awesome), and have pre-ordered Star Ocean 3 and Phantom Brave. This is shaping up to be the best quarter in gaming I've ever had.
Am I the only person who gets a bit of a Doom 64 vibe from this?
You mean all of the darkness? This game is just downright ridiculous. I love finding new email and voice messages. A real Resident Evil "things are weird here...what's going on" kind of thing. 98% of the people that worked on the base had no idea what kind of shit was going down there. I still can't get over how damn good this game looks and I'm playing it a mile from max options.
Ok, spent whole evening setting it up, tweaking some option, and even got some time to actually play it a bit.
The game does look nice, and frame rate is decent, after I went to tweak the cgf file. My 9700 Pro seems to handle it rather well, and gig of ram does help the job. I did have couple of instances of sound completely dissapearing, and I had to restart the game (and my pc) to get it back. Kinda weird.
I have it on High with 1024x768 or whatever the number is, and with some AA(4 I think), and as I was saying it runs well enough.
My setup is:
Athlon XP 2700+
1 Gig of Corsair XMS 333mhz ram running dual
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro with some OC
Still, I wish the game was more interractive(especially the environments) on the level of FarCry. Here everything looks pretty, but you dont really damage anything, and for example bullet holes from the gun when you shoot the wall, is a friggin black stain, instead of actual hole, and the smoke animation is not all that hot either :(
Also some of the enviroments were a bit jaggy/pixely without use of AA, but once I set mine to 4x, it definately improved.
The Gamespot review is up. Since I was waiting for Circuit City to get it in, I haven't committed the $45 yet, and this review makes me question whether I would be better off finally getting FarCry.

Well, despite GameSpot's criticism, I failed in passing this up while at the store. I am very, very impressed thus far. I am running it on an Athlon XP 2600+ with 1GB of RAM and a 9700 Pro, and it looks incredible.
I'm reading here and there that the core gameplay of Doom 3 really isn't all that special, and that without the admittedly incredible graphics engine, it's a basic and average FPS. However, the landmark visuals - and the visuals alone - make it absolutely worth playing.
Comments? Is the experience worth the four years of development time?
The graphics aren't just fucking graphics, it's the very enviroment they create. Yeah.. the core is pretty much an average engine, but jesus the graphics add so much to the gameplay and the effect. And we don't actually know too much about how capable the engine is. Supposedly it has support for Vehicles in it. I think that's what i heard.
It's definitely more about the experience than the gameplay itself, like Silent Hill or Resident Evil, but it plays a hell of a lot better than those. As a FPS it's only good (it helps if you prefer balls-out action to any sort of tactics), but as a horror game it's amazing.
Gamespot's complaints are stupid. "The gameplay hasn't evolved"...yeah, so? "The amazing graphics make the sound look not as good"...yeah, the graphics make every other game's graphics not so good.

I finally got my copy yesterday and holy shit...what a game. The game feels scary as hell even before the demons invade and you KNOW that there is no enemies. Once the first zombie hit it was way past anything you expected. Seeing the dark highlight of a zombie you missed right next to you is scary as hell. You never know what to expect and you're constantly on your feet expected the cyber-demon himself because the game is always throwing something new at you. My sound system is sort of weak so I'm probably missing out on the aspect but the sound effects are still incredibely creepy. Certain audio clips will play that will just send a shiver down your back.
I played the game for a little over an hour but decided I'd give it another go when it wasn't the middle of the night. I walked into a room and turned my light off to draw my weapon (think I had to shoot a zombie) then walked over to a staircase and as soon as my light was back out an imp jumped out of the stairs and scared the living hell out of me. If a game can have this much impact on somebodies nerves (and from what I've heard from a lot of other people, they're getting the same effect) then you know it's scary.
Oh, and one other thing... this game has the best interface for using computers and such in any FPS ever, bar none. I haven't seen that mentioned too much, but it's one of the most impressive details in the game in my opinion.
+10 for bringing that up. The computer interface system is great, the only time you have to leave the FPS aspect of the game is to use your PDA but for any other computers you remain completely within the game.Quote:

Not to be an ass or anything, but i dont find this game all THAT scarey. For the simple fact that they build it all up in a particular room but its the same damn enemy youve fought, and fucking destroyed easily, 900,000 times before that. Whats the sense in building a scene up if you know its just another one of those fireball throwing dudes youve just killed a billion times earlier. Sure theres some cool creepy bits, with the whispers and stuff, so ill give it that, but the enemies get old quick.
Silent Hill still got it beat in scares - but they are totally different games and have totally different approaches to scare you.
Im very far in the game now (delta labs), and its getting really good with each passing later level. I finally got the BFG too :) I want to see doom3 hell pretty bad now.
The computer interface is great, and the multiple ways/scripted sequences that enemies enter the room is friggen genious. It's not a re-invention of the wheel, but the game does truly scare the hell out of you, and it's without a doubt ( even at low resolutions ) the best looking game ever, the engine renders the real time lighting so quickly and crisply

Looking at an Imp isn't scary, walking into a room and knowing one might crawl out of any hole and leap from any nook at any moment is what's scary, especially when it works. Turning on my flashlight at the exact moment a Maggot jumped into face is just plain frightening. Silent Hill is creepy and wigs me out but has never outright scared me.Quote:

Ok, Spent more time with the game last night, doing more exploration, talking to people, reading emails, listening to logs and opening the lockers. Pretty cool stuff, and it help you immerse into the game's world.
Then all shit broke loose, and zombies started to jump from all the direction, and man, some of the moments were quite scary. Especially when zombies shuffle from some packet of darkness right in front of your nose, even when you checked it a second ago, and it was empty. Really freaked out me and dj one time.
Once you get used to the environments, it all starts to look better than initial impressions, and monster models are awesome. Blood splatter fxs are cool as well, and I love cool touches as Imp death animation, as they burn out after you kill them. Nice.
Sure, the fact that you have to constantly switch between flashlight and weapons, is a bit annoying, but it also helps to raise the level of tension, as you see the monster shuffling or running towards you, and you struggle to get the right gun :)
The sound is awesome. Screams and moans on the radio, whispers and bangs around you. Quite moans that zombies make before jumping at you from the darkness. Coolness.
Shotgun wielding zombie marines are annoying bitches though, but at least unlike FarCry you have save anywhere option, which I love in FPS.
I am still not very far in the game (only got back to Mars City from the underground installation), but so far its a great experience.

In SH its all about creepiness and mindfuck weirdness. Things are weird and dont make sense. At least this is how it works for me. Not to say that SH doesnt use cheap scares methods, but it relies on them less that say RE games.

There is no music. It's all sounds in-game. Tweaker did the main theme, which sounds like a crappy cover of a Tool song, despite Tweaker being really awesome otherwise. Trent Reznor backed out of Doom 3 because of work on his new album and the length of development.Quote:

the best thing falcon has going for itself is that they get high-end ati cards very early. and they're almost always in stock. ie they have lots and lots of x800 xt cards right now. and they've been nearly impossible to find for 2 months.
i got sick of waiting for one and bought a 6800 gt. just came in today, and i tried doom for the first time. absolutely incredible. especially the in-game interfaces and pda system. i love that kind of stuff, and it's soooo well implemented. i walk around just watching the different (stylish) menu systems.

Scratch Monarch off. $850 for this; 64 bit Athlon 3000, 512 meg of RAM, 40 gig HD, no DVD drive, no CD ROM, no sound card, no grafix card, no network card, no monitor, and no speakers....yack.. I did get a decent price at ibuypower with the same setup with a CD\DVD combo, Gforce 4, and a network card for less than $600. I'm considering it but FirstBloods got me a little scared though. Damnit, my head hurts now, I've got to get something though, Doom 3 and HalfLife 2 own my conciousness. You think those $500 dells with the 2.6Ghz P4s would suffice? Someone who knows their shit please help me out. I'm looking for something between $500 and $600 sans monitor and speakers. I would really like a Athlon 64. If someone could find me a good setup for that price I might even show my appreciation by sending them a free game or system.

It's not that big of a spoiler, id confirmed the Cyber Demon would be in the game awhile back, he was the most likely boss.
yeah, i know. i just didn't know it was the final boss.
i don't really care, either. i just like arguing.
Finished the game. The later levels are the best part about the game, and the actual hell level is just awesome. The bosses are really cool too - so theres a really good payoff for reaching the end. I would give Doom3 a solid 8 of 10.
Now the wait for the mods begins...

That is awesome.
I got to play it for two hours today.
I was terrified.
I beat it about ten minutes ago, and I loved how it ended. Some people don't like the final battle, but I really enjoyed it and thought the ending perfectly captured the feeling of previous Doom games.
Overall, I was sceptical before this was released (after all, when was the last time id released a game that had a single-player mode worth playing?), but it turned out better than I could have hoped.

mods are flowin in already. there's the all purpose(ie ever gun) ducktape mod, more gore mod, a full on flamethrower, and more hittin file planet almost daily.
