I'm waiting until my new video card arrives (again) to finish the game because I don't want to sully the last areas with a less-then-perfect framerate. The huge demon guardian of the Soulcube was an awesome-looking battle but there was a big framerate drop for it, and I know the last battle will be even more intensive. I think I'll wait just to savor it.
Until then I (finally) grabbed a copy of Planescape: Torment. Time to see if what everyone says about it holds up.
Is there a co op mode mod yet? and how do you install mods?

Finally got my hands on this, so here are some impressions! (I just know you've been dying for this):
1) The intro isn't like Half Life! It's more like Blue Shift (tee hee). Yeah, it uses the "normal day at work until things go to shit" cliché, but it does a great job of it.
2) Wow, this game is gorgeous to look at. One of the most beautiful, detailed, and immersive games ever. The PDA and the point and click computer screens are an awesome touch (and I guarantee every new FPS out there will have it).
3) This game plays and feels nothing like Half Life. Just because an FPS has a story in it doesn't mean it has to be compared to HL. Seriously, it's more Resident Evil than anything... there's even a crazy guy in control of the facility and everything.
4) The only thing I DIDN'T like is that the weapons feel like Unreal weapons. Yeah, my shotgun is practically disintegrating that zombie, but it doesn't FEEL that way, damnit. Also, too many shadows, and switching from flashlight to gun is a pain.
But yeah, I'm pretty surprised with how good the game is so far. All the detail put into each and every room is amazing.

There's a big panel that beeps when the crane is locked-on, you really don't even need depth perception until you drop them in. I had a slight problem at first but found that standing all the way off to the left and a little back (there's huge range for still using the controls) makes it easier.Quote:

Do you have to change your system setting everytime you play? Mine is always set to the lowest resolution when I start it up and AA gets turned off every time, and it gets widescreen turned off. I then change it every time, and it says some mumbo jumbo about these changes will take place the next time you run Doom 3. Any help with this issue would be great.
Did you make your DoomConfig.cfg file read-only? Some people have been tweaking it and then changing it to read-only so then tweaks don't get deleted, but obviously you can't change settings in-game, either.

Man, that ooze crap growing in the installation looks sick. The bump mapping in this game is ridiculous... try turning it off and seeing how huge a difference it makes to the graphic quality.

i know i know. i was just being silly. if you check that thread, you'll notice that i posted quite a bit.
and no, i haven't had any lockups, but i'm with nvidia. my only problem were these recurring audio pops. very irritating. i fixed it by turning off write caching on my hard drive.

we have one of those same onboard graphic at work (prepress tech). fucking thing cant even run MS Publisher right without dropping info left and right when the project becomes too large. but yet they buy 9800's for the macs. :confused:Quote:

I quit using that onboard crap, a couple months after buying my HP Pavillion. I upgraded to a 64MB Geforce 2, then a Geforce 4 - 440(64MB) and finally to a Geforce FX 5200 with 256 MB. I'm getting a new rig this friday - athalon64 3200 1gig of pc3200 cosair ram and a 128mg radeon pro extreme... how you rekon it will handle it, people have been telling me it needs a 512 mg card to run in high res and high detail :O would hate to see how it runs on this 2ghz p4:p

I am running my 9700 Pro on high with 1024 x 768 and it works rather well.
And I am sure that 9800 would have even better performance, unless you short on memory or have some other problems.
And by "High" I meant "Ultimate" =/
Yeah, I'm a 9500, and it can handle the Medium setting at 1024x768 just fine... though the game does tend to crash, so it might be pushing a little hard. Good to hear that it kicks ass on the 9800, though, they're cheap enough nowadays that I can pick one up and not feel like I'm flushing my money away in the toilet.

Yes..its the 5200. Are you putting the game with max settings?? Maybe tone it down or lower the resolution. You have a nice cpu.. why not pair it with a better videocard? Doom 3 is videocard dependant, not cpu. Its his videocard that is his bottleneck. Thats a great cpu (can I have it? ;) ), but the 5200 is a pretty underpowered videocard. Its not that much better than a geforce 3 so he's really pushing the card with doom 3.Quote:

Use the tweaks listed earlier in this thread, it really changes everything. Still, I got about 20-30 fps before those tweaks, so I don't know why your friend's having problems. I run it at 800x600. If I go 1024x768 it starts to go to about 15 fps, so I don't bother.

Okay I know this thread died but had to report that on a radeon 9800 pro extreme this game seriously is cooking at 1024 in high detail... pretty smooth going im getting round 50+frames a second
Well well, finally got hold of a copy of Doom3 and just had to share on a few of my experiences thus far.... in point form..
I laughed manically, like a hellspawn demon when I saw the zombie with the chainsaw for the first time... Knowing that it would be mine.
I laughed as I sawed my way through a level out of ammo, but desperate as hell
I squeeled with delight when I got my hands on my first beserk in the game, punching my way through a room of zombies
I laughed at the explanation for chainsaws on Mars
I stood in awe before the spider bitch from hell
Revenents are back unchanged fantastic! nice to see bony in 3d rendered glory
Mmmm rocket launcher
I was happy to feel scared for the first time in a game
I shouted in horror when I realised it was 2am forgetting all about work in the morning
Simply fantasic and I missed out so much!
The demo is now out.
Long after the hype has come and gone, too.
This really should have had a demo earlier.
I loved this game when I first got it, but man I cannot stomach to beat it! Too bad the game was horribly repetetive, at least we have an outstanding graphics engine.

I didn't have a problem with the length but personally I would've done away with some of the typical laboratory levels and put more Hell levels. I thought they looked great and some more scary Hell stuff would've been better. I guess the expansion will provide that.
