Who watched it last night? I kinda liked it, despite the really shitty generic "Space Vampire" bad guys of that galaxy. What can I say, I'm a sucker for anything Atlantis related.

I'm usually a sucker for anything Stargate related but I won't be getting this for another couple of months.
(because we don't get Sci-fi in Canada)
::shifty eyes::
I liked it; the story was good enough, the characters were amusing, the visuals were pleasing. I just hope it doesn't start to rehash old SG-1 plots, though I have a feeling they have enough new material to go on.I'll be watching this.
I was so pissed that I missed it last night. So what's the deal with this one? Did they set up a base on atlantis or something, will they be in contact with the SGC at all? SG1 was all about exploring the universe, what are these guys going to be doing?
Basic rundown: They find some new code for the stargate with 8 symbols (galactic travelling uses 7, so the extra symbol reprisents the fact it's intergalactic), they go through, set a base up on the submerged city of Atlantis, and action ensues. Also some people who appear to be direct descendants of the atlantians can manipulate their technologies, which kinda makes things pretty neat.Quote:

I'm going to miss Colonel O'Neil played by Richard Dean Anderson, but Stargate is so intriguing.
I hope they DO rehash stuff from the first. Not like... a total rehash but Stargate had great continuity as something that happened in an earlier episoe could play a pivotal role in a later one. So having someone go back to the SGC to get something to help them out or dialing an ally for help would be great. New Stargate movie starring Richard Dean Anderson as O'Neill please!
Oh wait, it is on in Canada. It's just on TMN, probably because they broadcast it in HD. Well that's just great - $2500 worth of equipment and service later, I could probably watch it on TV too. Fucking digital cable.
I've seen all of the episodes up and until episode 11 (which hasn't aired yet) and I think this show rivals the capacity of the first, which is saying a lot since SG-1 is easily one of the best sci-fi series of all-time. The series is way more science-fiction oriented, because of the lack of a real military presence (the SGC, pentagon, NID), but that's good because it keeps the show from repeating a lot of the same materials.
(spoilers ahoy)
Regus: In the shows premiere they pick up where the two hour season 7 finale left off. They're in the installment Jack used at the end of S7 to defeat Anubis' fleet. They've figured out that only certain people can activate ancient technology because you have to have an evolved gene. Apparently Col. O'neill has this gene which is why the ancient technology works and responds so well to him. We're introduced to Maj. John Sheppard who is a lot like O'Neill but younger and apparently a better pilot, too.
Daniel uncovers the location of Atlantis which, to be honest, felt a little bit underexplained. Basically, it's like when Jack found the homeworld to the Asgard. There's an eighth symbol in the dialing sequence which means the ancients lost city is in a whole other galaxy. The Pegasus galaxy. Using the ZPM (an ancient power device) they gate to Atlantis with a relatively large team of people. Atlantis is 'submerged' into the sea to protect itself from a new enemy: The Wraith. The Wraith defeated the ancients a long time ago.
And without a ZPM on the new Atlantis base there's no hope of their team dialing home. So they're stuck on this base millions of lightyears away. I was worried about this series because of the similarities between it and Voyager, but be rest assured that it's different. The people on Atlantis actually want to be there, which is a huge difference.
Anyway enough about my shitty synopsis. The show is great. Major Sheppard is instantly an amazing guy to have along as the lead. You can tell he's not as seasoned as O'Neill but he has the training and the sense of humour to lead. Teyla is a refugee leader whom they helped escape the Wraith. She's essentially the alien member of the team like Teal'c was for SG-1. You have Dr. McKay, who was in SG-1 as an annoying scientist who helped Sam on a couple of episodes figure things out, and Sergeant Ford, who's another military guy they haven't really built up too much yet.
I love the atmosphere, the story and the character thus far. My only gripe is that he Wraith really haven't been built up. Sure, they're powerful and they can't be killed without a lot of effort. But they haven't really been built up as an evil entity like the Go'uld (yet). They basically feed on other people and enjoy themselves while they do it, but you can't really blame one species for killing another to survive. It's basic instinct. So I hope that in the rest of the season they give us a face to follow instead of the generic evil protagonistic species.
I also can't wait to see the Go'uld take over a Wraith host, because you know it's going to happen sooner or later.
Oh and Sheppard has the most advance form of the gene, which means he can control ancient technology greater and with more ease than anybody else.
I might have said some mean things in the past, but this show is really winning my heart over. If you watch it on Sci-Fi pay no attention to my post as we're about 7 episodes ahead of you...
They've just setup the season finale in this weeks episode (1x16). They got screwed out of another ZPM (one of five or so Weir leaves directions to after 1x15 where she timetravels in an alternate lifetime to live with the Ancients), and now the Wraith know where Atlantis is and are apparently planning a massive siege as is hinted at by the dart which scans the city then self destructs. The city also apparently has deep-space scanners, since they detected 3 or 4 hiveships en fucking route. Some crazy shit is bound to go down and I'm hoping they find a couple of ZPMs and get that fucking city spacebound.
