Bigger breasts offered as perk to US soldiers

The United States Army has long lured recruits with the slogan "Be All You Can Be" but now soldiers and their families can receive plastic surgery, including breast enlargements, on taxpayers' money.

The New Yorker magazine reports in its July 26 edition that members of all four branches of the US military can get face-lifts, breast enlargements, liposuction and nose jobs for free - something the military says helps surgeons practice their skills.

"Anyone wearing a uniform is eligible," Dr Bob Lyons, chief of plastic surgery at the Brooke Army Medical Centre in San Antonio told the magazine, which said soldiers needed the approval of their commanding officers to get the time off.

Between 2000 and 2003, military doctors performed 496 breast enlargements and 1,361liposuction surgeries on soldiers and their dependents, the magazine said.

The magazine quoted an Army spokeswoman as saying, "the surgeons have to have someone to practice on".

In war time things can happen that disfigure and destroy parts of the human body. For the mental health, and sometimes physical health of the soilder, it is good to have a surgeon on hand that can go in and do his best to make the part of the body that has been destroyed look more normal so that the person can function in normal day to day life when the war is over. I imagion the breast inplants are for when the female chest area is destroyed due to an explotion or shrapnal(sp?).

They give things that include boob jobs because they train people for the real world in the army. If one of the doctors in the service is going to go into plastic surgery as his proffession, they are probably going to do boob jobs. Really though, I dont think that a lot of money is being spent here. The doctors are not getting paid extra, so it is really just cost of equpiment.

And we all know that an operation is really inexpensive once you cut out the Doctor salary. Even more so when compared to something stupid like a decent education for the youth of the nation.

All the people who are complaining about this are being dumb. Surgeons need to know this stuff to do reconstruction surgery out in the field. I'm going to repost what I said the first time in hopes some of you will get a clue.

No, but the skills used can be used out in the field. All the boob shit is probably just a way to get people to sign up, or do you think people would sign up for "let us shoot your nose off with a gun and get a new plastic one" day?

Before you go on, do you know anything about surgery, or it's history? Like how modern day plastic surgery evolved from reconstruction surgey of the wounded?

Reconstructive surgery has been done in the military for as long as it's been available. If someone's face is mangled due to something that happens in training or combat, I see no problem with having plastic surgeons being there to fix it up as best they can. However, the surgeons that do this kind of work need training, and since boobjobs and facelifts and such are less intensive than full-blown reconstruction, it makes sense to have it as training.

They're not giving the personel boobjobs for the hell of it, they're using the personel as guinea pigs for training surgeons. Personally, I think it makes sense... if the surgeons must practice either way, you might as well make the most of it.

Although I agree that it really is not that much to be upset over. The army spends a lot more on much frivelous things than training plastic surgeons. Personally, if it is what it takes to get doctors to volunteer for the army, it is worth it. We need them.

I've had severial personal dealings with military surplus goods. What the military pays for most of it's stuff is insane.

I'll agree to my taxes going to giving people lipo and boobjobs instead of developing and implimenting new and inhuman ways to maim, torture, and kill. Unfortunately, there's more than enough tax revenue for both.

Now that I work for a company who's sole customer is the military, I've a new perspective on tax dollars. Our taxes are wasted in phenomenal ways. Boob jobs for soldiers is barely a grain of sand on the beach.

That's still no excuse for this. Especially since we really need our money to be funding more important things, like what was already said (education, etc.) It is probably a ploy to lure people to enter the military, but I don't really believe the "practicing our craft" aspect of it. As another poster said, when you're dodging grenades and bombs and shrapnel, you really aren't thinking about the perkiness and lift of your boobs or your waistline. Not to mention...if I was in the military, I wouldn't want the enemy soldiers to notice me more because I got huge breasts, it's a higher risk factor in getting taken prisoner and raped. And it's a higher risk factor in getting killed, because you don't have a huge range of movement (the boobs get in the way). This is just another example of how crazy the world has gotten.

Surgery is a big part of being a doctor in the military.

Especially plastic surgery.

The more work/practice they can get, the better.

I highly doubt this is a recruiting tool, because for one when I talked to the Army and the Marines nobody told me I could get free liposuction, and also because there have only been 500 breast augmentation surgeries in four years. Thats really not that many. If maybe, what, 15% of the 1.5 million soldiers in the US are women, then... 500 out of 225,000+.

And... the only thing they pay for is materials. A breast surgery at a plastic surgeon might cost $3000 but the Army isnt paying $3000 for it.

I believe this news. We recently had to order new chairs for the tower cab since the old ones were falling apart. My friend is in charge of the funds and he is only allowed to order from one company. The CHEAPEST chairs were 500$!!! The military gets overcharged for everything.

I'm one of the IMPAC credit card holders for my squadron, so definitely believe that news. Coincidentally, I'm working on ordering chairs for another office, and yes, they can be up to around $700 for an executive style chair!

Before, I worked in Repair Cycle Management, and some of the smallest parts and pieces for aircraft and aircraft maintenance could EASILY be in the 100's to 1000's of dollars.

Im pretty sure its the same way for civilian aircraft. The FAA requires every replacement part to be certified and have proper paperwork, so you cant get replacements at Home Depot.

Hey, the military is all about wasting money, but funny enough when we get gear issued in recruit training your hoping that all your shit isn't broken. At least everybody had some piece of broken gear while I was there, the big thing for me was my buttpack which was missing a draw string so it wouldn't close, though I learned to rig the clips so that it stayed tight and shit wouldn't fall out. They told us that we better learn to deal with broken gear now, because it's worse when you go to Iraq. We heard a shitload of stories about how poor the Marines supply situation was in Iraq, bad enough that they couldn't even get working magazines for their weapons. The Marines have always had this problem as they have a low budget and most of their gear is stuff the Army doesn't want anymore but shit, non working magazines!? To the best of my knowledge the Army has it better there but they're still a little bit behind.

Well its not all the military's fault that they have to pay so much for goods. Usally the prices they pay are a mixture of insane requirements from the government/higher ups in the military and bad politics.

How it usally works is someone in charge, perhaps a high ranking engineer does something for the first time. They needa part, or a thing, or a vehical. They make a list of requirments they need for it. They then put that out on the market for companies to make bids on it or to come up with solutions to the list of requirements. The military then chooses the cheapest(I think it is cheapest, may be highest) of what is produced.

Who ever wins the deal is usally the only one to suply the part, or thing, or whatever.

One reason the price goes up, has to do with the entire suply and demand thing me and diff where talking about earlier. Typically the military wants something made just for them, and thus there is NO, NONE, 0 public demand for the thing. The military then has to pay for everrything for themselves. So while your hammer that it is 16 inches long and is made of steel cost 5 bucks, their 14.65 inch long hammer made of a polyblend of nutts and bunnys is going to cost 75 bucks, if not a hell of a lot more.

If this isn't bad enough, there are a LOT of bad politics in the production of military goods. It is very typical for those in political office to get things done in such a way to insure that the goods are produced in their state, maybe even by some of their friends. Also, perhaps to make themselves look good, or perhaps due to mandates from the government, there are severial unneaded production jobs in making the product. My dad buys a ton of used military hardware and it is very typical to see something like a washer, to be be rapped in bubble rap, the packing put in a plastic bag, that bag put in a box, that box put in a plastic bag and that bag put inside another box. Each one of these steps being done by someone on the clock.

The sad thing is that they could be using that money to pay us more. My friend is a shift manager at a Gap and he makes more than me. I keep planes from crashing into each other and he separates khakis! :lol:

To an extent, yes. It's based on the cost of living for a particular area. Of course, there is a celing, though. A small percentage of the utilities is taken care of. The rent itself is all fronted for you, if you're in the limit.

That apllies to folks who don't live on the base. (On-base residents pay zero rent and zero utilities). All they really have to wory about is phone, cable, internet and stuff like that.
