TNL/GG! crowd: Still 2 1337 4 u?

Ahh, a reflection of us, a year and a half to two years ago. We played terribly monotonous games like Tokyo Bus Guide (my personal dumb decision), paid exuborant prices for them, but justified the costs because they were Japanese. That makes them better than what we have, right? However, I see fewer and fewer threads about obscure booty-poking and kitty-raising titles in a language 99% of us can't read. Is this simply because we have become more rational, or is it that titles that were traditionally import-only have come to the US?

I haven't seen any more threads about how to put your games in air-tight baggies when not playing them, either. Dust? OH NOES!

What's the point of this thread? Don't know.

I think it's past the point of being l33t. Those newbies who pop in with all the makings of a l33tist are brought down without so much as a warning shot over their bows.

Since most here are in the advanced stages of l33tness - characterized by dismissal of all things l33t and persecution of those who still champion these ideals, it is understandable that outsiders and those who have yet to reach the upper echelon see it as a lack of l33tness. All of which is not entirely untrue.

I'm still playing the same sort of games I was playing two years ago, just a lot less often. =\ Just found out about an old japanese cinematic boxing game that I'm looking for, for instance.

As for the difference in topics, I think some people leaving has about as much to do with it as people's changes in taste over time. yup.

I think a big part of it is just the people who run the site and talk the most - where as before, we had elitist douchebags like ECM set the tone, now we have the much more accessible and friendly Nick, or sleeveboy.

I imagine a lot of people got burned by the GameGo! way of buying tons of shit (haul threads were commonplace) and buying a lot of obscure shit just because it was obscure/cheap, so they stopped doing it. I know I fit into that category. I bought like fifty games during that GG! summer! Fifty games! I soon realized it was very unsatisfying and a waste of cash. Really only two of them come to mind as worthwhile purchases - Metal Slug and Guardian Heroes.

Also, a lot of people just got jaded - like Josh, for example. And me. Being so anally-retentive about your games just doesnt pay off for 99% of people, and the collectors on the board (of which there are a handful) generally know what to do about their shit.

Working in video game retail for many years completly destroyed my love of video games. I don't give a shit about anything thats coming out (except for Burnout 3).

I seriously doubt that I'll be buying the next generation of consoles.

Josh, I feel you on that. I seriously have no interest in any games coming out. Even Jade Empire, which I should be jizzing over, I am indifferent to. I love Star Wars Galaxies, but thats more of an anamoly than anything else. I got no plans to buy any of the new systems and if my PS2 were to break tomorrow, I wouldnt give a shit.

There have also been a huge number of well-made western games with actual good production value as of late. I blame the Xbox as a large factor in this.

God, that's exactly how I am now. This year, I have bought one game: Morrowind. I'm looking forward to 2 more: Fable and Halo 2. I've sold all of the stuff I bought to be "hardcore": IIDX, NUON (although I needed a DVD player at the time, so I benefited from it), and all of my other random accessories. The only one I have ever regret selling is Samba de Amigo. That game was awesome.

I agree with the mods comment, too. Nick has always been cool.

North American and European developers are now destroying Japanese games and their outdated, limited game mechanics and scope. I'm glad the faggot-chan mentality is near dead.

I have noticed the change over time at TNL. A while back it felt like I had to try my hardest to make such a Japan-centric crowd respect Western gaming and not believe that gaming went to shit with the shift to 3D. Now, I don't feel like I have to.

I would like to see more threads on the import scene here though.

I find myself wanting to get into film and movies more then gaming, so for the price of one game I can get 4 DVDs. 3 if they're brand new releases... and I usually watch them 3 times minimum, so it's not a viable solution for me. I buy a game when it tickles my fancy but nothing more.

Well, as with the others on these boards, I used to import heavily and want to own all the "hard-to-find gems" that were being talked about here and in Gamefan/GG! Now, I just don't care anymore. Import-wise, there is absolutely nothing that would make me want to go to the trouble of modding any of my systems. Even domestic titles, what with the "sameness" amongst them, can't get me interested. So I go back and play through Starcraft and the user-created maps for it. At least my computer can handle it. :)

I think Johnny is an old-timer. Used to have an avatar of an orange thing that wore a green backpack, iirc.

I am NOT Lucas Barton, not by a long shot. I've always gone by Johnny, since GameGo!, and before the merge at TNL. My old avatar featured Momomo from the Puyo Puyo series but I've been using this one since I started posting again after a little hiatus.
