Black Voter Appreciation Day
Bush Campaign urges black voters to "Stay Home, Take The Day Off."
In a surprise move the Bush Administration has chosen the first Tuesday in November as a day to honor black voters. George W. Bush urges black voters to stay home on November 2, 2004.
The declaration came during Bush's tribute to the Civil Rights Bill which is now 40 years old.
Standing in the East Room of the White House, the same room where President Lyndon Johnson signed the bill in 1964, George W. Bush said "Forty years ago, in many parts of America, basic rights were observed or denied based entirely on race."
He said, "A person looking for a job or even a place to stay the night could be turned away merely because the color of the skin, and that person had very little recourse under federal law."
Bush Campaign manager Ken Mehlman then said that the administration plans to take the Civil Rights tribute even further and give black voters a day off as repayment for past hardships. "We want you people to take November 2, 2004 off," he said. "Particularly if you live in a closely contested state."
He went on to say, "If you live in Florida, we'll even help you by removing your name from the voting rolls."
Mehlman emphasized that this holiday was for black voters only. He said, "The campaign is compiling a list of phone numbers and e-mail addresses of registered black voters and will work hard to get the message out."
"We've even set up a Republican phone bank dedicated to calling black voters on the First Tuesday in November as we have done in the past," he said.
Amazingly Hilarious.
