Yeah, I just went to sleep and let it run all night, it was creeping along so slowly last night it usually took like ten minutes for a single percent addition. CS and HL:Source installed no problem, though.

Favorite moment so far: The enforcers are on a bridge with explosive barrels so I aim at the barrels to blow them off, and the instant my finger presses the trigger they drop a flaming barrel right in front of my face so I detonate it at point blank range. Damn circumstance.

I'd still be playing but it decided to freeze on me and I'm scared to try and remember when the last time I hit quicksave was.

not a problem. the game autosaves frequently. almost halo-style. it's just that it does so silently.

I was going to say, doesn't it use a cool checkpoint system?

The autosave is horribly frequent and intelligently placed. I find most of the times when I go to save it already just has.

Double awesome. I hadn't touched any of the menus since I started playing so I wasn't sure on that, most games give some kind of on-screen notification even when they auto-save.

I was just poking around Shacknews for HL2 stuff, and if your having sound skipping they (one of the Valve programmers) suggests lowering the sound quality option to medium (if on high). If that doesn't work, then lower the texture detail. My audio seems to work fine but I'm going to try that first tip and see what happens.

If I boot up and close everything, and don't run IE before playing, set the sound quality to medium and textures to medium it seems to run alot smoother, suggesting it is a RAM issue. my framerates increased dramatically as well.

What changes in sound quality if you tune it down to medium?

And have we discovered what you need to keep it on high? General system ram or some type of sound card minimum?

I'm sure we'll get a patch and new drivers to make it run even better. Bug testing this game must have been absolute torture.

The dsp effects are mixed at a lower rate I think. I can't reall hear the difference.
