Seriously, you're saying that a game is not as good because you don't like the extras. Think about that for a minute. Is SFIII:TS a lesser game because the System Direction lets you turn off parrying?

Yeah, I can totally see that. I think I started a new game about three times before I really had a grasp on how it all works and what I was supposed to be doing and what characters I should be sending, I just didn't understand it being boring.

I thought Chrono Cross was very good. Not any better than any of the PSX Final Fantasies, even though I'm not a fan of FF8. Chrono Cross' story never interested me, it needed a REAL villain. I thought the Home World and Other World were too similar (they basically just changed background music) so it felt like the entire game was a buncha backtracking to me. I could never figure out what to do next as well, that may have been just me.

I would play Final Fantasy 9. It's really easy to get through and the story's entertaining up until it gets a bit stupid at the end.

I would play Legend of Mana for a week or 2 and get rid of it. You'll get a basic idea of how it works after a few hours. If you don't feel like finishing it then, you probably wouldn't ever want to. I got stuck in it long long ago, I can't figure out how to finish the damned game. Stupid openendedness...

I got most of them though like 30 or so. But none of them had and real depth to them except the main few. Many of the characters were also redundant. And when I said core, I mean what you can do within the game in one play through.

I don't like POORLY IMPLEMENTED EXTRA'S. A great idea with shitty execution is still crap.

This is a common misconception. I too believed the same thing, at one point.

On my second runthrough, many years lately, if you read between the lines (and depending on the path you take and the characters you bring), a good deal of the "redundant" characters are actually connected to each other.

How was it poorly implemented? You track them down and sometimes do a little something to sway them. That's pretty much every PC and console RPG ever. The only difference between CC and other RPGs is that by and large other RPGs have a lot of distinctive characters that stand there and say something, and then run away or stand in the same place no matter what else happens. CC gives you those characters and lets you fight with them instead of having them be functionally useless. Why is getting something that you would normally be denied for no real good reason such a bad thing (not just directed at you, a lot of people complained about having to pick from a large assortment)?

Personally, Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite game of the FF series... so yeah, I'd highly recommend it. I'm pleasantly surprised at the amount of love it's getting in this thread, too, as I thought most people disliked/ignored it. <3

On the other hand, I'm disturbed by how much praise Chrono Cross is getting. It wasn't a bad game, by any means... but the highlight was definitely the presentation. There isn't a whole lot of character depth, and most people I've met are of the opinion that CC's story wrecks what was set up in Chrono Trigger.

... I guess TNL just attracts people with strange taste. :x

You're still going to have some characters who server no purpose whatsoever in the game, and are really just thrown in for the hell of it (like the space alien and cave girl), but a good majority of the beginning characters serve an overall purpose.

When you start, take Miki (the rock star) as your way into the castle, and keep him in your party to see what I mean. He interacts with at least 3 other people in a unique level, 3 people who I assumed were worthless in the overall game (including Miki).
