What's up with Adult Swim ads saying Aqua Teen Hunger Force's final episode is in a few weeks? Was the show cancelled or is this some promotional setup for a new season?
It was my understanding ATHF was pretty popular, and I can't see the writers being out of ideas already. *-neo
I thought it was strange too.....I do think that the show should end before it jumps the shark...but still.

Brak was popular and they cancelled it for a year or so, it's to help avoid over-exposure and probably to gather fresh ideas during a period of non-creation. Tonight they had an ad which also mentioned Harvey Birdman being cancelled with ATHF and that's the one I really hope they don't take off. Dr. Wierd is hysterical but the rest of ATHF I really don't care about one way or the other.Quote:

Opaque, I can't think of any specific examples beyond some jokes just being repeated that weren't funny to me to begin with, and that the third season just seemed to really overexpose the show, although Carl being used more in it certainly helped it immensely.

As far as Harvey Birdman, they had a really hard time getting the show off the ground; episodes would go over budget regularly in the first season, and would be months late to boot. It's been peddling against that since it started.
ATHF, though... if anything, they've probably come to the point where the well is just dry. It's not exactly the most engaging premise in the world, and there's only so many directions you can take a show that basically amounts to brilliant nonesense before you just get tired of making it. I'm not so hot on the new shows. Meatwad has gone from being innocent and child like to having a bad attitude and being self loathing. Meatwad makes ATHF IMO, so this sucks. The difference being that Shake is just a loud and obnoxious character that does things merely to annoy and antagonize others. Which isn't the case with Meatwad.

They'll die of old age before they're able to lampoon every Hanna Barbera cartoon character. I swear there were 10 new ones a week for years in the 60's and 70's.
Yeah, there were about a dozen Shaggy-ish characters, a bunch of Scooby knock-offs, etc. Birdman is done, although the entire series will be brought to DVD in the next year.

Yeah, it seems like a decent show, though the kids have no personality whatsoever. The whole 60's throwback/ Johnny Quest look comes off right and it's fun to watch just for Samson.Quote:

And it's good news for Cartoon Network IMO. They been hinging too much, and still cashing in on the current "anime explosion" were still stuck in.
Originals like, SeaLab, ATHF, and the whole lot(though repedative they tend to get) are still refreshing.
But back to Venture Bros., the score is the best part. They use samples of classic 50's action songs and mix in some HARD drum and bass ,or jungle rytheme along side it.
Try and catch tonights rebroadcast for all you insomniacs out there in case you missed it. From what I've seen the show could use a ratings hike.
Not like you have to watch the Athens games or somethin'.

That whole thing was pretty gay with Aqua Teens, I really like the show (even though they took it off weekly playing) and it would really suck if they cancelled it.
Venture Bros. looks like a promising show too, Samson is great.
Im rather sluggish on the Venture brothers. The doc is annoying, and has no redeeming values whatsoever. The kids are 'tarded. Brock kicks ass of cource, and has to carry the whole show. I do apreciate the whole Johnny Quest knock off, but 3/4 of the cast should be thrown back into the heap.

I think the third season is way better than the first two. The show just seems more polished, and the relationship between Meatwad and Shake has gotten so much funnier.

I would sooner call the Venture kids overly optimistic then being two full blown head cases. They can oddly backup their motives through some clearly under/overthought observation they make. But it seems obvious they were sheltered from modern living, only leaving thier neurotic father to clean up after them and create explanations for thier actions; and Brook is always willing to take out the trash, so to speak.
But the reality the show bases itself on is too surreal to take seriously. [I know there's some sense in that somewhere.] The real gem of the show is in the writing, which has a natural, non-forceful, pace to it, which is held together by convicing delivery. Convicing to the point where one could take joy and have fun in its absurd nature.
This show has a devilish sense of timing.
The doc is meant to be a torn in the shows side, or the party pooper or something. Most of the story is built on how neurotic and anal he is! But some of the sluggishness may be due to a lack of 'wow' factor I thought the show would get in the animation department. While not terrible, its easy to feel lost or bored without any large train wreck happen in mid airing to wake you up. It likes to leave you up in the air over the plots eventual outcome until the shows big finish. And it makes for more patince pacing and set up. That's what I like about the show. It has an ending that i actually liked and enjoyed. And if you thown in a few quotable lines, you'll have a very happy and long time veiwer.
Last episode in the space station was great. When the chick takes her helmet off and all the men shrink back and they all have a different way at looking away from her. When Samson bangs her ("Put the helmet on, I like it like that") and the brothers watch and describe it like a wrestling match was so god damn funny, they know nothing.
"Is it on now?"
"No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes."
"Boys, that's called blinking. How about now? Is the light on?"
"Yes! It's just regular on now."
This is a great analysis of the show. I knew that I had some off kilter view of this show. I guess the Venture Bros and I got off on the wrong foot when I thought from the commercials that this would be about Brock. I honestly thought that this was going to be a spoof of action heroes and such. I was bored when I realized that this was a Johny Quest spoof.Quote:

In last Saturdays show, they pulled this hilarious sexual innuendo gag as the gangs spaceship was entering Grantauan 1's(sp) docking bay, with Brook as the pilot and a sensual sounding Russain lady astronaut over the p.a., instructing Brook on his ...entry.
So the lady goes on, panting and moaning as the ship goes further, on and on. And meanwhile, Dr. Venture is steady stewing over how their both enjoying it.
And once she finally 'reaches her peak', Brook, suppish as always, goes:
"...That's a tight fit."
Lady: "Mmmm, it's like they were made for each other..."
Dr. Venture, cleary pissy about all this goes:
"Well, of course they were made for each other! They were built by the same guy!!!"
...For some reason, I feel like the joke wasn't worth the effort it took to type, but you all get the idea.
The shows funny.

It's really a show you gotta watch, there were a ton of sex jokes. I really like writing and honestly, none of the characters bother me. They each have their own role and they work really well together. I really like the art style too.
How about that other new show? Hooper and...I can't remember the other guy. They got C.A.R.R. too (like K.I.T.T.) I think it premiered 2 weeks ago...it got a few laughs out of me, I think it has potential to become really great.
It might have gone like Strooker and Hoop. And to be honest, I'm not liking this one too well. The shows pacing is a little bit incoherent from me at times, like how they jump from a fight against high school football game mascosts, to immedatitly being thown in a random neighborhood after being beaten, stripped nude and tied.
I'd like to see a little more ground work done on the caracters themselves, like what their real motives are for their dectective work. They seem too shallow.
But the talking car(C.A.R.R.) growing a fetish for hands-only car washes was damn funny. This show uses more sight gags then anything, though. I'll try and catch it next week.

I think the problem that I have is that all of Adult Swim's shows, anymore, and just TOO "wild and crazy." I think too many of the shows are just trying too hard to be creative and out there, and I end up longing for shows with a bit more of a "normal" feel to them. For example, I think Home Movies is a great show, and the concept and ideas are simpler and more down to earth.
That, or we get shows where the main characters are just dumb as a bag of rocks, and I'm sick of that too. That is one of the reason that I didn't like either Stroker or Venture.
The C.A.R.R. stuff was funny, the rest...not so much. ATHF remains my favorite overall Williams Street show, as Sealab is just a bit too...random now, for my tastes.
So, it's back. But it's Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 now. And it's got a new theme song (from Queens of the Stone Age) and it's in Seattle instead of Jersey? Maybe this needs it's own thread, but I doubt it.

Aqua teen is very hit or miss. Early on i wished fhere was more Carl, and then there was a streak where there was a lot of Carl, but it wasnt as funny.

"hit or miss" implies that it's only good 50% of the time, but that's just not true. 90% of the time it is AMAZING and 5% of the time it's just ok, and 5% of the time it's not nearly as good as the rest of their episodes but still WAY BETTER than anything else on TV.Quote:

I guess it can't be all be the classy, highbrow, and ultimately rewarding humor we all expect from professional wrestling and the ATHF.
I'll watch a random episode and give you examples of what I think is funny on the show, if you're actually trying to understand why people find it amusing.
I think people find it witty because some of the jokes pull so many elements together at one time. To get them, you have to think a little bit.
I mean, no, its not something deep, most of the time. But at the same time, its more clever than 99% of everything else out there? It also helps that the writers play off of stuff we probably didn't notice in our youth, but might be completely valid observations.
Like Johnny quest for example. VB asserts that he would probably grow up to be a drug addict because he lived in the shadow of a very successful father, and/or to deal with the stress of so much chaos in his childhood. Its funny because the visual is fantastic and extreme at first glance, but at the same time, sounds kind of valid.
And the execution is funny. And the writing is pretty good. There are a lot of elements to it.
I think you have to have a dark sense of humor to enjoy the show, imo. The overall joke of the show is the tragedy of the dreams of youth. That if all this prior fiction is taken at face value, in an adult context, it all becomes very cruel and absurd.
This is all just m opinion.
EDIT: There is also some social comentary of the jadedness of everyone in western society under the age of 40. Of how everything seemed so bright and wonderful 50, 60 years ago, and its all kind of fallen into shit. Nothing ever got as good as they said it would.
The whole show was set up as a parody of the old Johnny Quest cartoons from the start. I used to love those cartoons, so that's what initially attracted me to the show. The writing is pretty great and yeah, even if there is some lowbrow humor mixed in there I would say the show as a whole is pretty smart.
Ok, I will give this show another shot. Those are all convincing arguments. Is this available on Netflix or Hulu or anything?
