Rosemary's Baby

Saw it earlier today and I thought it was really scary movie (though I did watch it at 2 in the morning with no lights). I don't know how it works, but that 60s/70s faded and grainy look just makes horror/thriller movies of that time (Wait Until Dark, Vertigo) a lot more effective.

For those who have seen it, what'd you think of the ending? I was flipping through the IMDb boards for this movie (IMDb in general is an awful place to discuss movies, but occasionally they have links to interestng sites) and people thought the ending was open-ended, but not in the way I thought it was.

The general consensus was that the witchcraft society was real and Satan did bang Rosemary, but the split is that 1)Rosemary accepts the baby or 2)Rosemary is about to kill the baby.

For me, the open-endedness was that either Rosemary had gone completely insane and was imagining the end, or that yes, the Satan society is real. I'm not usually a fan of open-ended endings but the great thing about Rosemary's Baby is that either ending is absolutely terrible. Polanski did a really fantastic job of creating the alternate/dream world of Rosemary but also allowing it to pervert real life. NOTHING in the movie seems quite right, but not everything is totally off either.

(Actually, I guess not even the studio executives understood how the ending was supposed to be because they made an unofficial TV sequel, in which the kids grows up and has to deal with being Satan's offspring. Boo.)

I've been meaning to see this for forever, but I keep forgetting. I'll probably pick it up this weekend if the hurricane doesn't kill me.

Yeah, do it. Mia Farrow is pretty hot for the first half of the movie, but then she gets that anorexic, decrepit look she has in all of her Woody Allen movies.

I always thought that everything was real and that Rosemary just accepted the child in the end. I never really thought she was just insane. How perceptive of me (Yee).

Hurricanes are fun. When Isabelle trashed VA and Carolina I had a lot of fun watching trees fall and hit cars and then riding around on my bike in all of the completely trashed neighborhoods.

I think she accepts it. Been a while, but, doesn't she flip out, threaten to do it, then go over to the crib? I'm fairly certain she gives it a look and you can see that she accepts it.

I don't see how it could be insanity. The fake doctors? The Neighbors? The Special Drinks? Satan bangs her.

I thought it was a good movie and had a good payoff. During the movie you never know if she's just paranoid, or if it's true. When you see the baby, you know. Not a scary movie in the use of the word, but a suspenseful one with a solid payoff.

She flips out but doesn't threaten. If the Satan society exists, I don't doubt that she accepts the baby. (The 'maybe she'll kill the baby' are speculations of IMDb people.)

There weren't any fake doctors. Maybe they were lousy and assholes, but not fake. The key that it could be insanity is the way Polanski films her dreams. There's no transition at all, no making-the-screen-hazy as she drifts off, its one frame she's in reality, the next she's dreaming. She's unraveling.

Also, how she's being forced constant sedatives at the end makes her more untrustworthy. At the end, she just wakes up and knows. She knows her husband's gone, she knows to take the knife, she knows to go to the closet, she knows there's going to be a hole. Unusual.

Either ending is great, which is why I really liked the movie.

I'd have to watch it again. I see no reason why the baby isn't real, and am pretty sure she gives a look after she freaks out, where she looks like a mother.

I mean fake in the sense that they were working for/with Satan, and doing what they could to make the baby satan thing grow.

Been a while, don't remember, but I never got any impression that it was a dream, such as in the end of Taxi Driver. I was under the impression that the drugs given to her were to keep the baby thing growing and make her less likely to do something stupid/wig out.
