I did not know that Madden is going to require your CC # in order to play tourneys & whatever online. Sucks to be you guys who have to do that.
I really like the way they did that feature with the video segments going along with every page, even if that one wavy hands guy did say "piggledy wiggledy".
As for the games, I'd get both if a) I thought I was going to play two different football games, and b) it wasn't going to run me in the neighbourhood of $100 cdn. As is, I'll stick with ESPN. They really need to rip off Madden's mini camp mode, though.
Great piece, and the online Madden shit seems needless, furthering my desire to just get NFL 2K5.
So this time GameSpot is right and everyone else is wrong? Interesting.....
Yes, it's not like Xbox Live requires you to provide the same information to play online right? :rolleyes:Quote:

Tying a credit card to a specific account is a good way to do that, even though all the premium features are free this year.
I own both ESPN 2K5 and Madden 2005. I don't care what Gamespot thinks, but they're both solid games. Gun-to-my-head though, I'd probably take ESPN this year. Also, EA's "Fair Play" rules for online games absolutely blow.
Please elaborate. I always like hearing about EA blowing. :DQuote:

EA messed with their fair play rules and shortened ranked games to four minute quarters instead of the standard five.Quote:

The game forces me to choose between a difficult 52+ yard field goal (which will give my opponent great field position if I miss) or a punt to keep things "fair" according to their rules, but Jesus Christ, it's a two possession game with four minute quarters! How the hell am I supposed to come back when they're forcing me to do shit like that? I didn't even have the option of running a fake field goal or punt either. I was stuck in the exact same situation in the 2nd quarter too when a previous drive stalled around the 35. Apparently, EA believes NFL teams never go for it on fourth down until late in the fourth quarter, or even bother with fake punts, field goals, or surprise onside kicks...stupid online rules.
Mamoscott, GameSpot never said they both weren't solid games, just that they preferred 2K5 over Madden.
Hello McFly! Anybody home? :bang:Quote:

What I want to know is where was all this fanboyism last year? It's practically the exact same game as last year except it was $50 dollars-
Ohhhhhh I get it now...I forgot. This is the year for people who don't play Football games to go ape shit. If ESPN wasn't $20 bucks, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Say what you want, but when it's mentioned in every single review ever written for it, the price does play a huge part. I payed $50 last year over Madden and I was fine. I payed $20 bucks this year before Madden and I feel screwed.
When the game is $50 bucks next year we won't be talking about it. Even though ESPN is largely seen as a Joke around EA offices (It was played during a recent quarterly meeting to much comedy), I expect Tiburon to go totally balls out next year because of how close it is in the media.
PS: Yeah, Fair Play does suck, but it's good for pussies. You can always just turn it off but it seems like not many people ever do. You know. Because there are a lot of pussies out there. Oh, and if your team has a good kicker (Like the Raiders), punting a 52 yard field goal is actually easy. 60+ is where things get impossible.
Mamo, I was responding specifically to this: I don't care what Gamespot thinks, but they're both solid games.

Probably someone is a liar.
I don't play most of these because they tout realism but don't really come close. So far 2K5 is the winner here.
Last I checked, you can't change the rules of ranked online games, so turning the Fair Play rules off (or using 5 minute quarters) is not an option. I always thought the pussies were the ones playing exhibition games online that don't count against their record.Quote:

Punting a 52 yard field goal is probably pretty easy, but since field goal kickers don't actually punt the ball, that's not really relevant now, is it? :) And if it is so easy to hit a 50+ yard field goal, then it just goes to show how unrealistic the kicking game in Madden 2005 is. Only a few kickers in the NFL can consistently hit 50+ yard kicks.
I wasn't trying to refute the conclusions of the Gamespot editors, just stating that it doesn't particularly matter to me what they think.Quote:

Oh, and I know what you're saying about the kicking. Thats why I said, "If you have a good kicker". My Raiders totally dominate on field goals but I know a lot of teams do suck at it.
Speaking of kicking, everyone should adopt NCAA's kicking. ESPN's is way too freaking easy, Madden's is too random..NCAA's is hard to get the hang of and even when I got used to it, I managed to totally screw it up every so often. And isn't that how kicking should be?
Thanks for the clarification, mamoscott.
Sure kicking should be difficult if you're a third string 2A high school punter. For these guys it should be, and usually is, simply a practice in focus.Quote:

God forbid people enjoy their games to require a small amount of skill.
Says the guy who puts DOAXVB at the top of his GOTY list.
It's not easy to kick a long FG with a hint of wind with a regular-silled kicker in ESPN.
You should be able to run whatever play you want, whenever you want, regardless of someone's perception of what's "realistic" and what isn't.
With 4 minutes left and you're down by 14, a field goal doesn't do you all that much good and it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion that you're NOT going to try to tie the game with a gimmick play or what have you.
Ridiculous.
