Huge Grasshopers

A few days ago I went with my dad to help decide what to do with my aunts stuff (she died a few days ago). While there I took the chance to take some pictures of the mutant black grass hopers she has in her yard. Her yard was the only place I've ever been to that had these monsterious beast. They grow up to be about 3 inches long and get about .75 inches thick in the middle. Their kicking legs are sharp enough to cut into a person's finger. Real evil little beasties.

Does anyone know what these things offically are?

Locust offshoots. We get brown ones in FL every year.

next something get an object in the picture for size comparison. But the coloring by itself is something Ive never seen on a grasshopper.

Brick is at an odd angle, hard to compare brick to bug. Plus, bricks do come in varying sizes (im assuming that is standard size..).

It's not a mutant, I saw these on a nature show once. I had a normal green one in my apartment a while back that was almost that big. It had sticky feet that tickled and made me giggle like a school girl when it jumped on my neck. I think I'd freak if one of those black ones jumped on me.

We get enormous albino crickets in the town where I grew up, and they're almost as gruesome.

We have lots of those big ugly grasshoppers here. During the right time of year, you can actually see them squished on the road.

Any dead insect that you can drive by at 50mph & still know what it is, demands respect.

Also, those things don't really jump too much, they just walk. If you startle them they will make a halfassed little hop about twice the length of their body, but it's not very impressive.

i'm such a baby when it comes to huge bugs. doesn't matter if it's dangerous or not. >= 2 inches, i'm not going near it.
