You guys really really REALLY need to read that thread in the NTSC-Uk forums. I thought we GAFFERS were die-hard Sega arcade racing fanatics, but we pale in comparison to the Sega junkies over there. After reading that thread, I am almost convinced that Burnout 3 will just not be in the same league as OR2. Check out the following comments...

This is the big thing that I think our man Daz has hit squarely on the head. I don't want to make a judgement... but I suspect we won't see hide nor hair of it come the Christmas Top 10 (though hopefully, it'll definitely be in the Top 40, if not the Top 20. Hopefully).

And while I only speak for myself, I now count five people on the team (out of a possible six, not including design) who consider Burnout 3 to be a redefining moment in arcade racing history. No doubt some here may disagree, but then I'd retort by saying you haven't been playing it solidly for nearly two weeks and still can't find enough time in the day to go back to it. Sorry if that disappoints, but it's true. And I'm still only less than 50% through it. Dang.

Out Run 2 epitimises everything an arcade racer should be. Bold, brash and arrogant which is exactly the mentally you need to have when playing. I think what puts Out Run 2 above it's competition so far is the brilliant Heart Attack mode. Whilst I can't fully comment until I've played the full game but I can't imagine BO3 offering anything as envigorating.

the fact you can complete any course on your third attempt is completely irrelevant in my opinion.

I mean seriously, BO3 is gonna be great and all, but to an arcade racer that's been playing Sega games for so many years, OR2 is going to offer that trademark gameplay we have been craving since the early 90's when Daytona USA first entered the scene. After playing Burnout 2 on my PS2 recently, the controls are just too...how can I say it...generic...lifelesss. There is no sense of depth to the handling and drift techniques. And this is something that is a Sega staple. Sega racing fans will know what I'm talking about.

Has this man played any racing game online or in an arcade versus other people? People race wheel-to-wheel like it is their job. Learning how to squish people against the wall in Daytona (and then watching them barrel roll six times) was a vital skill to learn. Burnout 3 is designed that way because the developers are assuming (correctly) that such "deviant" play is going to happen, so they may as well focus the game on it instead.

As for the additions to Outrun 2... the Sega fanboy in me is screaming like a Japanese schoolgirl right now. Good thing I have him locked up in a jar somewhere; people would look at me all weird and shit otherwise. It has been how many years? Eight? About damn time.

Exactly. No matter how well Criterion has apparently nailed the art of dirty driving, it seems like it takes a lot less skill to drive that way than to link boosts or keep a combo alive for three straight laps.

Burnout 3 sounds like it's got a lot more style than substance to its gameplay. OutRun2 sounds a lot more appealing to me.

Actually, it's more like looking down on throwing in Street Fighter and saying it is cheap.

Once you start setting up fictional restrictions for yourself that the game does not enforce, you're on your way to losing. Playing under a handicap may make you feel better about yourself, but it doesn't in any way make you a better player. Rubbin's racing. Ask the big boys.

And I find the idea of "honor" in an arcade racing game to be hilarious.

What some people call "dirty", others call "extremely effective." Granted, racing dirty in real life will get your ass beat quickly (because it involves a very real risk to loss of money and life), but in an enviroment where there is no such risk (like in an arcade-style racing game), I have no problem with it.

Play within the rules of the game; do not try to make up your own standards of what is "fair." This is like people crying "cheap!" whenever you threw them in Street Fighter II. Were throws overpowered in that game? Yeah. Were they abusable to the point of making the rest of the game worthless? No. (Pretty damn close though -- the later revisions fixed this quick.) If the developers really did not want people driving dirty, they should put game mechanics in to deter it -- see the black flagging system in GT4 and the car damage in several games (Pro Race Driver 2 comes to mind).

Regardless, even if you do not like doing it, you still need to deal with everyone else doing it. I do not like racing like that, but when push comes to shove I will. Then it becomes the choice of winning or playing "fair," and you always play to win.

It is not like they removed the fact that going really damn fast and avoiding traffic is important. Linking burnouts in 2 was easy if you can manage to avoid traffic while doing it (and that element is still in the sequal). You could also still put people into crashes in the previous games; it is just a more fleshed out and important mechanic.

Two things, I apologise if they have been posted before.

1) The Hornet is not selectable (unless it is a hidden car nobody knows about)

2) These tracks are (as the developers put it) "homages" to the actual Daytona 2/Scud Race tracks. They won't be spot on, and they are using creative liscense to make them fit into the game engine.

1) I doubt it is in the game, unless Ferrari has done stock-car racing before, which I seriously doubt (the thought of it makes me cringe, actually...) This game only has Ferraris in it, right? No goofy hotdog cars or anything?

2) There was an updated version of Daytona USA 2 that had the option to race on a special track that was basically one lap around all three tracks with sections to join the tracks together. It was in the same order, too (Advanced -> Expert -> Beginner). I expect the bonus track in Outrun 2 to be almost exactly like that previous track. As for Scud Race, I have no idea how that is going to work.

Scud Race shouldn't be that hard to do, mainly because you slide around in that all the time too, or at least I do. I think they'll be just fine.

Scud Race was such a good game. I can't wait for Supermodel to get a public release so I can play it again.

You and an opponent are equally good at driving and are using the same cars. Who wins? The first one to knock the other into a wall/median/traffic/off-road.

When I played BO2 I knocked opponents into oncoming traffic and would honk at traffic to steer them into my opponents path, if that game had been online you could bet your ass I would do the same thing to you in that game. In PGR2 I purposefully caused pileups as soon as possible just to slow down the other cars. Hitting and running works great in racing games, although I am against the idiotic online tag-team where one person purposefully kamikazes so the other can get ahead.

I prefer to race with people I know and there is a core of about 20 people in PGR2 that are very good and race compeltely fair. Calls of "On your left", "Passing Right" "On your inside", "Had to back off, you got it" are common in these games.

In most rooms there are people like you and bumping is 'part of their game'. In reality, they are almost exclusively complete shit at it and as soon as I pass them they won't see me again until the end of the race when the positions are talleyed. Most of the time, it's simple enough to be in front of them and taking a corner from out/in/out, then just stopping and watching them go plowing into the wall because I don't go where they think my car was going to go.

Basically anyone who crashes into cars in attempt to win has a supreme lack of skill.

While I do enjoy bumping, I've got to agree with MVS. In PGR2, bumping online or with a fairly intelligent opponent will get you nowhere. Now I'm not quite up to par with him, but at least I wasn't ramming people, or slamming into corners like some of the people I've see. That being said, I'll probably start playing PGR2 again.

Oh and I heard if you beat the game within a certain amount of time, you will unlock Diffusionx as a secret passenger, who will curse you the fuck out if you crash too many times. But....if he gets too annoying, you can drift the car a certain way on two wheels, and he'll flip out the vehicle and tumble down the track :p

On the bumping issue. I don't think Outrun 2 should be played like that. Burnout 3, on the other hand, probably becomes more intense. Will BO3 be online?

From playing the demo for BO3 it seems they went from "Crazy fast twitch racing with cool crashes!" of the first two games to, "Huge crashing and destructive racing, with lots of motion blur!" I'll still get it, and still enjoy it quite a bit, but it seems different so far.

Oh and to be on subject, Out Run 2 is sounding phenominal. I finally got to play it in an arcade, and its wildly fun. I can see it being easy, but this Xbox rev. sounds like its adding oodles and oddles of cool stuff. Can't wait.

If it was Daytona that might be good. Daytona 2 was pretty forgetable.

He's correct. Althought that might only be because I played a lot of Daytona, and not so much of Daytona 2.

I don't remember Daytona being that fast either.

And it has the Outrun 2 music in it, I want the cheese rock from Daytona 2

And that isn't shit, now that I'm watching through it, they've bastardized it. I want LAPS, not a run through.

Does OutRun 2 have custom soundtracks? If it does, just burn some Daytona stuff to CD and rip it to the system, bam, instead gaming heaven.

True enough, I prefer Blue Blue Skies to Melody Time Golden Shower or whatever that one Outrun song is. Some of the music in the Outrun series gets too repetitive(Though I liked the Outrunners soundtrack, maybe because the arcade had the bass so damn high it crotch-punched your eardrums.)
Oh and f the haters that Daytona 2 "track" looks seriously cool.
Now for Shenmue 3..oh wait nevermind.

While it looks cool, and it seems to be a faithful reproduction, I just want to be able to race laps around it.

Hell, it's an essential skill in Wangan Midnight- especially with the Tension Meter system where your life depletes based on how far ahead an opponent is. Right at the start of a 2P race, I'd have the wheel turned toward the opponent in hopes of forcing them into the wall and then taking off. No penalty = no foul. In a game, honor is nothing but an unnecessary, unrewarded risk.
