That does it for me kids. Come 2006-07-whenever the latest next-generation consoles hit I am pulling out of buying new games. I have realized there is way too much shit to play now and quite frankly I'm tired.

I'm fucking exhausted in fact. I'll go ahead and say I will NOT be buying Fable upon launch, hell even Halo 2 is debateable. Instead maybe I'll actually play a game I already own but haven't touched.

That however doesn't mean I'm quitting gaming, but then again this could be considered the first step. Technically I guess I could consider myself finished when I have played every game I've wanted to play..eh well..

Whatever the case, anyone else starting to consider quitting or even just not buying the latest consoles anymore?

I ain't buying shit until some games come out that interest me. With that said, I'm sure some games will come out next gen that will indeed interest me, but until then I've got no plans on getting any new consoles.

The only next gen system I'll be buying is Xbox 2. I don't have the money nor the time to really justify owning all of the systems anymore. I've also gotten a bit into computer games recently with Doom 3 and World of Warcraft. We shall see. :)

Like with most systems in this generation I will wait a few price drops first. The DC was holding me over for a bit this time, and next time it will be my lack of interest. Things keep taking too many steps in the wrong direction in relation to gaming. I will wait it out and see if they start getting things right for a while before I jump on the band wagon.

I never buy systems until at least a year or so after it's been out. That way there will be plenty of games I want to play, plenty they are marked down in price, and the system will be marked down too. I have plenty of games now though, and all three current systems, so it'll be a while before I get another system.

The last system I bought and will ever buy at launch was the GBA. Never again. It's not worth the extra money, and it's always better to wait about a year for the GOOD games to start showing up.

It all depends on what's out at launch, but even if there are actual AAA-level launch games for each, I doubt I'll buy them all.

I really have no interest in next-gen systems ethier. From this gen I still haven't picked up a Xbox, not from dislike of the console just because there's plenty of other games still require attention on systems I have. *-neo

I will buy a next gen system after it drops its price at least a couple of times. No need to be an early adopter and pay through the nose for crappy games.

Good Xbox games started showing up right away...

I had 0 interest in an Xbox until about a year ago. Now it's my favorite system ever, but yeah.

All and all I think Xbox had terrible launch titles, one great game and a dozen mediocre ones. Hopefully that is a lesson learnt

Dreamcast had a nice launch, with the decent Sonic Adventure and the arcade Perfect Marvel vs. Capcom and Power Stone (wait, was that launch?). Blue Stinger sucked ass.

What did the PS2 have? Tekken Tag (ugh), Fantavision (ugh), and Ridge Racer V (yay).

I agree with this. I'm exhausted too. What really needs to happen is games have to be cut to 1/4 of the play length and come down to $20. Could you imagine if CDs and DVDs had 40-60 hours of content? You'd never, ever get through them. Games are just too damn long for me to play what I want.

No plans for next-gen gaming for me. I've got plenty to be happy and satisfied for the rest of my life.

Once future gens hit, it'll take something truly different and revolutionary for me to consider keeping up with current events, actually.

Developers are just making games longer because fans have asked for that for a long time. Back in the SNES days, most platformers could be beaten in what, 2-4 hours? And it had one ending and nothing to unlock. Nowadays, an average game takes 20 hours to beat, has tons of unlockables, multiple endings, online support, and user-mod support (for the PC). And here's the thing - this is what people have been asking for.

Like I was telling Mzo a few days ago, I have Warcraft 3 and I could conceivably play only that game for the next 5 years. Anyone who buys Burnout 3 today and plays online will likely still be entertained by it six months from now.

So not only do games cost less now than ever, theyre longer and have more content. There's just no need to buy lots of games and consoles anymore.

same here.

The local newspaper ran an article from the Associated Press today about the curent surge in retro gaming. Many peple are more interested in playing old NES re-releases, or Atari all-in-one joystick devices, or Namco Class of '81 arcade games than the next time consuming graphics fest on their Playstation 2.

I'm still looking forward to the game designs of the future.

Power Stone was a DC launch game, as were other fantastic titles. The Xbox had some great ones at launch, like PGR and Munch's Oddysee. Certainly a much better launch lineup than the PS2, which had to have one of the worst all-time launch lineups ever. Even the Saturn's sparse game launch kills the PS2's, thanks to the few games released at launch being great.

I agree with all of that. It's just that while cheaper and better is definatly a good thing, longer is not always better. In my case, longer is hardly ever better. I'd much rather play a variety of titles than spend the same amount of time on just one game.

Better depends on what you look for in video games. Regardless of what you like or not, you will have to say that the way games are made are different now. They have different emphases than the NES era, or the SNES/Gennie era, or heck even the PSX/SS/N64 era. If you prefer the games that are being made now, then good for you. Enjoy it while it lasts, until gaming takes another turn.

For every person jumping off the "gotta have it first" bandwagon, there is someone else jumping on. It has always been that way.


Retro gaming has gotten popular due to old farts (like me), reminiscing about old games on forums, and renewing interest in the young and old. It is no sign that current games are "lacking" anything. In fact, for the amount of hours you can get out of a new title (40-150 or even infinite (some multiplayer games)), video games are the greatest value/playability they have ever been.


I am a "wait and see" type. I learned my lesson on the PS1 (buying it the first day out), then having to suffer through some sparse 40 dollar games for a year. In fact, I just recently bought a GBA, and only bought a PS2 because of GTA 3(it currently collects dust). The good thing about waiting, is that most of these games/systems have been played millions of hours by people on the internet, so you have a database at your fingertips when it comes time to buy your discounted titles.

If the next Nintendo system (THE DS WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THIS) launched with a Mario Picross game, I would get it day one.

First of all, the Mega Man series is trash. Second of all, like anything else, there's good ways to do it and bad ways to do it. Games that use unlockables as a crappy way to extend the life of the game are bad. Games that use unlockables as rewards for good play or whatever are good (often, racing games). Some games have really shitty stories that lag in the middle. This is bad. Some games have really great stories that just take a long time to finish. This is good.

Well... good developers have the same goals now that they did 20 years ago, and thats just to make a good game. While a bad developer with a bad game may focus on getting the graphics right to the detriment of gameplay, a good developer definitely would not, and that hasnt changed.

Its just like movies. A shitty director like Uwe Boll will use lots of CG, lots of quick cuts, lots of bullet-time and overload the movie with that shit and then brag on the internet about how many cuts his scene has. A good director like Sam Raimi will use CG to enhance the storytelling. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with CG.

The one thing that has definitely changed since the 8/16-bit days is multiplayer gaming, and yea, you either like that or you dont, I think its great. But even if you dont, plenty of great single-player games come out nowadays.

I was just saying, I actually forgot about PGR, I think of Halo, Munchs Odyssey and Fusion Frenzy.

Videogames don't cause me any angst or exhaustion, nor do they provoke in me a great deal of contemplation. They're just fun to play, and every generation has produced its share of fun games. The same will be true for the next generation, meaning that I'll buy one or more of the consoles and have some fun just like I always have.

I'm having a lot of trouble catching up on games, so I will be waiting 1+ year(s) for the next-gen systems before buying them. Hopefully by that time the system will be cheaper and more A+ games will be released.

I think everybody is all talk. When the new systems are announced, they'll suddenly regain interest. And end up being the first in lines at midnight (cash in hand) when each system comes out.

The last time I got a system at launch... and I mean like within the first few months, ws Sega CD, and Genesis before that. Now that I think about it, those are the ONLY times I got systems right away. I'm not saying I won't get a next gen system, just that I'll wait to get it.

I doubt I will. The Xbox and the PS2 were both a waste of money at launch. Debately, the GC was a waste of money period :P If it wasn't for a handful (stupidsaflkjsdf) nintendo games that I really enjoyed on the GC, it would have been an utter waste.

Yeah, I could see myself waiting. Better to buy it $100 cheaper and with a much broader selection of games.

Well, you got me here. With the advent of 4p ports in consoles (thanks Sony :bang: ) and online servers, multiplayer is the best it's ever been. No argument.

Still, going back to "games are better now than ever", that I still don't agree with. I would say that the PSX/SS/N64 generation was the best, so our opinions may match if that's what you mean. But I can't say I'm half as interested in this current one, unless it includes the GBA and DC. Not that there aren't GC/PS2/XB games that interest me, but there are very few, and they don't wow me the same way that older games did.

You could just use my method. When I used to have an N64, I was really into it, but when the next gen [this gen] started falling into place, I found it absurd to waste several hundred dollars on a system launching with a couple crappy games [a la Luigi's Mansion].

Whenever the new stuff is coming out, just ignore it and hit all of the great current gen titles you missed out on, you dont feel like youve missed out on something before it completely vanishes and "waiting" for the next consoles by playing oldies is a good excuse for waiting for a price drop. ;)

Why wouldn't someone just finish games before buying additional ones? The idea that you would stop playing videogames because too many good games are coming out is absurd.

I don't play videogames anymore because nothing comes out that I like that much. I don't like loadtimes and I don't like handhelds. If I've got friends around I like playing sports games against them, but single-player stuff bores me pretty quickly. I had a good time running through Mega Man X recently.

i only have the first two playstations and 30 games total for the both of them. so i dont have that many games to begin with. i only buy about ten games per console gen. so no im not gann stop, for now any way.

I'd want to stay away from the launches of those systems just to stay away from faulty hardware. Happened with the PS2 AND the Xbox, for criminy's sake. My launch GC and DC are working just fine, though.

I was fooling around with a friend's copy of the most recent Bond game, and, get this, you have to unlock multiplayer. Multiplayer! The only reason I would buy a game like that is to have access to multiplayer.

Unlocking is bullshit. I don't need to be fed carrots to enjoy a game. If the gameplay is good, I will like the game, and if it's not, cool unlockables aren't going to mean anything to me. Racing games are the same way - why would I enjoy being forced to invest 30 hours racing Trabants in Project Gotham Racing in order to earn the right to fool around with the Aston Martins. Games these days.

Sports games are the only thing that seem to get better with each passing year. EA Baseball 2004 is a hundred times better than All Star 98 or 2000 or any other baseball game I've played before.

Because very good / overlooked games drop cheap, and don't stay around very often, so I might as well pick it up while I have the money and just get to it later.

Plus often times sale prices will go back up, and some sales are too good to refuse if you're eventually planning on buying the game anyways.

Diff, haven't you only played a handful of the hundred+ releases in this past year?

Yeah, but it seems obvious that most of the people who follow this buying pattern end up buying a ton of games, only completing a few, and then whining about how they have a 'pile of shame' or something. Spodaddy is the only person I know who can almost every game that comes out for a video game system, play and beat them all, and still seem to have a life.

and that's without considering that the Saturn launched at about twice the price of the DC.

BUT it had VF, which, along with Daytona, made it a must-buy at launch for me. The DC had Sonic and near-launch, VF 3tb, making it a must-buy at launch. Plus, Shenmue looked amazing in screens, and I wanted that game the second it came out.

I thought that as well. The engines sounded better too. None of the other Daytona games, did the powerslides as well as the first Saturn Daytona.

With the start of the holiday season I made some decisions on my buying habits for the fall. There's just too much stuff out now to buy it all, so screw it. I'll buy what I can play, as I can play it. I might snag some of the budget-priced stuff early just because it's cheap, but otherwise it can sit on a shelf at the store and wait for me to get to it, if I manage to get to it.

Translate that two years to the future when the new consoles hit and you've got my method of dealing with it. If there's something that makes me bounce up and down with excitement I'll jump, if not it's not like there's going to be a horrible shortage when I finally get around to buying it. I'm not looking forward to the next gen but I'm not dreading it either.

I don't get tired of gaming because playing them is such a small part of my day. Three hours is generally the most I get, and that's a good day. The days of an 8-hour gaming session are long gone, and honestly I don't think I'd find it fun any more.

Back when the DC online games were on it's last legs, it seemed like a lot of guys from your country were still playing online and I'd get a few sessions of Daytona and Bomberman with them. Everyone was speaking spanish after the race, but I'd get to talk to some of them in english. Those were the days!

I find that most games you can get cheaper if you wait a bit, unless you know it's an ultra low pressing. I have yet to come across a game this generation that I've wanted, and didn't get at a low price.

This thread has gone from buying no games to launch titles and which system has the best launch.

I think Pepsiman has a good idea, and one more people should invest some time in to consider. You don't need the next generation of games, you just need to get games you think you'll like. Buying something because it's 15 bucks is a waste of money. Some games on eBay you can find for 10 bucks are worth that, and if you play them then they're worth that. Pile of shames are wastes, since every month there's 10 new games added to the stack.

I think a little bit of Pepsimans buy older and enjoy the fruits of the generation combined with diffusionX's discriminating buyer attitude weilds the best results.

Heh, it wouldn't surprise me if we crossed paths that way. I played a few rounds of Daytona (got my ass whupped) but could never get online with Bomberman for some reason.

I only buy a game when it's cheap if I know I will enjoy it. Of course, my "pile" is nothing compared to others on here.

On not buying any more games....That makes me happy. It makes me happy because I realize that I, after playing since I can remember (Earliest memory here) still love video games. It makes me happy to realize that I am not jaded. Sure, I hate Nintendo and SNK, but everyone has their company to hate. I'm glad that I still have such wide eyes and can enjoy video games for what they are. Not for their "essence" or whatever bullshit TNL jargon people like to spit to attempt to make themselves feel superior.

I'm happy with the current generaiton. In fact, this is the most fun I've ever had playing video games thanks to amazing American development, widespread internet play and a million other reasons. The next generation will come whenever it comes and I'm not in a big hurry to get into it. But when that day does arrive-

On buying consoles at launch...I'll most likely wait a good 6 months or so to let the next consoles flesh out in terms of games and lifespan. Unless Microsoft comes out swinging with Halo 3 or some great XBOXLive launch title, I can see myself just biding my time. Sony never surprises anyone so I know I can wait on the PS3 for however long it takes.

The last console I got at launch was the N64, and no one could honestly blame me. People who don't say they weren't impressed by Mario 64 try way too hard to be cool on the internet. My first console this generation was the PS2, and that was when Dark Cloud 2 came out roughly. I picked up the XBOX when DOAX was released and I by the end of this year, it will most likely be my favorite console of all time.

I will be getting two of the three next gen systems. Sony and Microsoft have earned my money. Nintendo has tricked me twice in a row. They won't fool me three times.

Nintendo blew it with the N64, redeemed themselves in full with the Gamecube. Personal opinions may vary, but whatever Nintendo does next I'm there for.

I didn't like the N64 at all, and it took me a while, but I'm finally coming around to liking the GameCube.

I'll be getting all three at some point.

I'm sure each one will have atleast a dozen games I will want to play by the time it's generation ends. It happened this time, it will happen next.

Nintendo blew it with the N64, redeemed themselves in full with the Gamecube. Personal opinions may vary, but whatever Nintendo does next I'm there for.

Am I the only one who doesn't get this? Why hate a company? I mean, I'm not a big fan of the Gamecube (tho I own one), I didn't get an N64 until last year and I never owned an SNES or NES during their heydays. Nintendo doesn't cater to Consumer Meach. I don't hate them, tho. And what does 'hate' mean? You won't buy a Nintendo game? Ever? If you did, would you still 'hate' them?

On the PBS thing last night about videogames there were all these developers talking about how they 'hate' MS. What the eff? What do these companies do that warrants hate?

I mean, I don't think highly of MGS or Rumble Roses or Castlevania. That doesn't mean I won't buy Konami products in the future and it doesn't mean I hate the company.

Anyways. Just thought I'd mention it.

Mzo, Rumpy, you're both welcome. While I understand the rationale of folks not liking a company, I don't really believe in it. Every company that I can think of has put out at least one product that I've really loved at some point or another, and I don't think that hating a company, and potentially lowering my enjoyment of games due to that company not being a part of my gaming life, is all that productive.

How can you not understand how someone can hate a company?

I hate Nintendo because they're full of great ideas and they get so many opportunities with greatness, but then they shit all over themselves and their fans by denying themselves greatness. Perfect example? Nintendo not wanting to support internet play on their titles with the DS. Why? Because apparantly we don't want that.

Years of awful consoles, rehashes of games I played 10 years ago, yadda yadda..They're an awful company.

SNK? They're why no one likes 2D anymore. Shitty fighters. The end.

Seriously. Anyone who believes games like SvC: Chaos, KOF200x, and Samurai Showdown V are good fighters is on crack. Has to be. These are some of the worst 2D fighting games in the past decade.

SNK pushes out embarassing fighting games like I push out large stools. Its a feat, really.

I don't like Nintendo for getting rid of progessive scan support (I still have to send my cube back to get a "refurbished" cube with teh digital video port), and for the lakc of online for the Cube. Other than that, I think they make some good games, and I don't mind when they rehash games because there are some games I missed, so I'll get them at the right price. If I don't want it, or I think it's too much money, I don't buy it, simple as that.

Nintendo owns no one will ever change that.

when the specs and screenshots of the next gen come rolling out full steam im sure 8 out of 10 people here that said theyre uninterested will change their tune. kind of easy to be uninterested when we have next to no info on the matter.

The real question is do we really need a new generation of systems right now? Now I'm sure I'm gonna get 2 out of the 3 or hell if I feel real saucy, all 3 of the next gen gaming consoles, but is it really a necesity? I think not. I mean how much can graphics really improve?

Did you see the pictures in the Elder Scrolls 4 thread? Doom 3 is just scratching the surface. Im predicting photorealism in the next generation of sports titles.

The thing that bothers me though is that they still sell fucking RF adapters with these new systems. Everytime I sell an Xbox or a PS2 RF adapter (oftentimes with the system), I cringe. I tell the people that buying a new TV set would really help them see what these new games are capable of, and s-video is a huge step up from RF, but they just dont care. Theyre gonna be buying Xbox2 and PS3 and hooking it up with RF. Its a real bottleneck.

I'm not sure if I really want photorealism in my games. I guess in sports games it would be really awsome, but other then that, I just don't see how graphics can get much better. I'm sure they will continue to progress where every detail is perfect such as no jagged lines anywhere and perfect physics with everything and such, but the thing is is that is it really a must? Do we really need to switch to a new generation of systems when the graphics of games on the current systems are still vastly improving.

Guys, gotta remember that we play games for the games, not for the name recognition of the systems we own.

If the games are no fun, then there is no reason to own the system for said games. With that, I've never purchased a system at it's release, but wait about 6 months and see how the industry is going with the new hardware. If the games are good, I'm in. I got my PSX for Doom, Street Fighter Alpha, and Wip3out. I knew they'd be good, and I had a helluva time with those three games alone. My money spent was justified.

I got a GC after seeing the possibilities of Metroid Prime. My money was justified. I got a PS2 after the price drop, and seeing all the nice titles at cheap prices. My money was justified.

I would never just buy a system cause it had a certain name on it. What happens if the games never arrive for it? You're up a creek. Get a system for the games, not the system itself, or you're wasting money.

Well of course from a business perspective it works out just fine, but the companies are for sure ending the generations way too early. I'd say todays generation still has at least another 2 years on it, then start thinking about releasing the next gen consoles. But back to your point, yes ppl will buy them since gamers have a tendancy to want to play new games that come out, and if they can't play them on their current system, then they will get the new one.

US releases are still a ways off for new consoles. Considering we'll see them in May next year, I think the earliest we'll see any of them on shelves is Holiday '05. Depends who decides to tip their hand first.

It depends whether or not you're playing your games at your own house or on your own TV. Bringing an adapter to play games on grandma's ancient television is useful to pass time.

I bought my PS2 when GTA 3 came out (a year or so after the systems launch) and it was worth it then. At six months? I don't think it would have been. Also, at this time there were no bundle deals. It wasn't until March or April until those came rolling out. So people agreeing and saying they'll wait 6 months, as if the bundles and cuts will be coming, aren't being realistic about the bundle deals that came out this generation. Usually price cuts aren't done until 2 years or more in the life cycle of a system.

Xbox was the last system I bought (Gamecube the first... ugh...) and other than SSBM and Luigi's Mansion I was bored to tears, even having to buy games like Cel Damage in order to pass times where I wanted to play games but none were out.

This generations start for all systems was slow. I don't mean the launch, I mean 6 months after launch we were all starved for new games aside from replaying Halo.

RF adapters make me sad.

These people do need to invest in new TV's before new systems.

Your grandma's not going to buy a new TV for you to play videogames on. It would be nice, but it's not realistic.
