i only played DMC2 for 10 minutes at a friends place, let's just say i wasn't impressed to say the least.

I have played through those scenes in the demo and can safely say that this game will live up to the original.

I can't wait.

DMC3 looks good. Real good. Hopefully DMC1 good, which was amazingly good. Not like DMC2, which was...not good.

That's what people said when they played DMC2 at E3.

But this DOES look like a huge step-up from DMC2.

I played this back when the other thread hit but never got around to typing up anything. One thing I want to go over:

The styles need some tweaking because right now they don't each seem to be equal. Trickster is okay, definately the weakest of the bunch since running up walls isn't needed and the dash is only marginally better then the sword thrust. The sword style (can't remember the name) is better since you can stall an enemy on the twirling sword or you can throw it, which makes a good projectile both ways and opens up fist combat. Problem is, I had a hard time throwing it, Dante usually just started spinning the sword whenever I tried to toss it. I think it has something to do with the range of surrounding enemies, but until I figure out how to properly use that (or gets fixed if it really is screwed like that) it gets a second place score. Gunslinger is easily the best of the lot, immediately giving Ebony and Ivory actual stopping power instead of their usual "fire at enemies who just walk right through the bullets," controllable multiple opponent aim, and rapid-fire shotgun.

Note: the fourth style wasn't available in the demo.

FYI: For them claiming to have a controllable camera, this is the weakest effort I've ever seen. It won't re-center if you're within 15-20 feet of a wall and circling is slow enough to be totally useless in battle. Fix that re-centering issue and they're gold (actually, give the option for a behind-the-shoulder locked camera and then they're gold, but at least they're actually somewhat putting some effort in the camera system this time).

i really hope they bump the difficulty up a little. At first i thought DMC1 was hard, but the more i got into it, i realized it's not as hard as i thought.

Shadows were awesome enemies, both in graphical/visual representation, and in the actually challenge they posed.

Aye, that was tough. I love landing on their spike attacks and letting them have it, though... that was awesome.

what is DMD difficulty?

Dante Must Die difficulty, that you get, if you beat Normal and Nightmare modes.

Much tougher enemies, who also have time limits before they go into berserk mode, when they can only be damaged by DT attacks. You do much less damage and bosses have more life and real pain in the ass.

Very challenging, but I found it to be a great fun. Once you beat it, you get Super Dante, with unlimited DT trigger, which is really cool.

Videos looked interesting...I never really got into DMC, but this one has peaked my interest...

In Japan, and you can get it off the net, and play if you have modded PS2.

I'm playing the first one on DMD right now just to regain old memories. The third one already looks like it has more depth then DMC2 though, you can tell that its not just style in this title. And I'm glad it's coming out in Spring 2005, Capcom understands my wallet will implode if they don't.

Unfortunatly noone else knows that.its almost as bad as 2002 xmas...nothing came out all year than BAM like 20 friggin titles at one time...do companies realize that the little under the radar titles could actually sell if they release them in summer/fall instead of BLEADIN CHRISMAS!!!
but yeah,i am glad that DMC isn;t till next year...i have WAY to much stuff to buy.I still havn't found my SFAC controllers.

EDIT: i just got DMC3 demo from suprnova.org as usuall the HD Loader doesnt like CDs so it got stuck on 51% when i tried burnning it on DVD it turned out that DVD drived is busted! :(

lol, I was hoping I'd get to it first. That new chick gives me goosebumps, for a second I thought it was an emo younger version of Dante, but alas, just some new character. This looks promising. The stylistics in this game look more like they'll be used to the max instead of just show in the 2nd one.

It looks awsome and everything seems to be on track except for the fact that the characters dont look cool like the first one. Dante looks like a fruit now. Why would you wear no shirt and a trench coat? Also that new chick doesnt look that cool neither.Other than that it looks awsome.

Um..He looks more badass then he did before, and stronger, which doesnt really work, but I guess we could say the baddies he faces in this title are much weaker then the ones in DMC? Either way, it looks great, and I crave wallpapers, or a couple songs from the game.

So the game has been leaked, I am going to import from Play-Asia which is shipping out on the 15th. The JP version has a option for English text and all voices are in english.

DMC3 comes out on march 1st, im so pumped for this one! :D

Some games you can just describe in one word, like Bangaioh = Explosions. For Devil May Cry 3 the appropriate word would be "BADASS".

Hell, after the intro movie the game says to you "YOU WANNA KNOW? DEVIL MAY CRY!".

All the cut-scenes are just over the top and REALLY well done, and actually two movie producers handled the cut-scenes instead. Dante is back and makes sure to be a complete smartass to every boss or character he encounters. Some of the things you will see are Dante owning up Demons with a Motorcycle, Jamming on an Electric Guitar (which is one of your weapons!), Demons getting their shit ruined, and a whole lot of people getting stabbed. They are fun as hell to watch and I was ready to have my face rocked everytime the "LOADING" screen (which you can shoot by pressing SQUARE) came up.

Just a little background on myself and the DMC series. I beat DMC1 on Dante Must Die mode and the bosses in that game are some of my all time favorite but I havn't played it in several years. I have never touched DMC2, and never plan to. As far as I'm concerned, that game does not exist.

Anyway, you have probably already read about the four (and 2 secret) styles. These are all really balanced and it just comes down to preference in the end. If you love to go around blazing Ebony & Ivory you will be in Gunslinger mode all game. I can say that every single one of them brings a whole new level of kick ass to Dante when they reach Level 3 (the final level). You will only be able to get one of them to Level 3 on your first time through though (About 15 hours). However you can replay any of the 20 mission you have completed, so you could level them up hard or save up Red Orbs for purchasing upgrades if you wanted to. This is one thing that can make the game easier.

Your style ranking is based on your rating while fighting enemies. Initially you will start with "Dope!" and once a bar below this is filled, you move up to the next level as follows:

Crazy!
Blast!
Alright!
Sweet!
SShowtime!!
SSStylish!!!

Now you can't just spam the same move over or keep firing your guns and hope your bar fills. Only varying your techniques will keep the bar moving up (the bar is constantly moving back). Even taunting (SELECT, and Dante has a load of phrases) will get your bar up! This may seem like it could be difficult, but not with the newest combat addition.

Other than the styles, the newest and biggest addition to combat is the ability to equip TWO Melee weapons and TWO Guns (out of 5 total for each). At ANY TIME (mid-combo, in the air, wherever) you can switch between these 4 weapons by pressing L2 for Gun switch and R2 for Melee switch. This makes combat very deep and it just looks badass when you have all the upgrades and know what you are doing.

I was only playing with my Grado SR60 headphones but the sound in this game was rocking hard. It supports Pro Logic II and Dolby 5 for cut-scenes.

The graphics are top-notch PS2 quality and the backgrounds are varied and great to look at (reminded me of the first game). They have some very nice architecture going on here.

There is Easy, Normal, Hard, DMD mode, and a new "Heaven or Hell" which is a 1-hit kill mode for both Dante and enemies. I guess the hard part about this is getting a "S" style ranking, otherwise you COULD go around killing everything with Ebony & Ivory 1-hit kill.

edit: The only thing I can say that felt a bit off was one of the menus where you can look at your moves looks a bit crappy. It also loads very slow because they have recorded videos of the combos in action.

Also there is a map you can select but it is useless. Really a game like this doesn't need a map, and you won't ever use it. If you DID want to use it, it wouldn't help you, because it doesn't tell you where to go next. I have to say RE4 had one of the best maps.

If anyone is worried about getting another DMC2, don't be. If you have any questions please ask me.

How are the English voices? BE FUCKING HONEST OR YOU WILL DIE.

I think there are a few sentences that don't come out right for Dante that may bother you, but otherwise it is really good, all the other characters are perfect. Dante actually made me laugh a lot.

Just like how Chaos Legion had the Super Hard Mode, right? That was loads of fun. Great impressions, first game of the year I'm excited for.

*sigh* Why does every game I touch break? I played a bit of this tonight and was fighting Cerberus when something in his AI went all wrong. We were fighting like I imagined we were supposed to be and then I worked my way over to the right to unload some bullets into him... and noticed he had stopped tracking me. I was standing on the right side of the arena pumping bullets into him like all hell while he viciously attacked the left corner as though something was over there. This went on for the minute or so that it took to drop his lifebar with no interference. Easy fight for me, but that wall is sure going to feel some pain when it wakes up in the morning.

P.S. DMC3 is pretty good. I've been playing nothing but slow-response/cooldown movement games for the last month so right now my hands are out of practice from moving fast, and trying to do everything feels a bit clumsy to me. All that KOTOR II, WoW, and CoH has taken its toll on me.

Same level as DMC: The bosses sound great but Dante's first language was obviously not English.

It's a shame games on the PS2 don't look so hot anymore.

So, what's your take on camera in DMC3? Since we argued so many times about it in original game, do you feel that 3rd time is the charm and I know that you liked the improvements they made to camera in DMC2?

Did you interupt it at all? He has to finish. It gives almost 1 bar. And is just best used when waiting for more enemies to spawn or they are far away.

Anyway, I am playing on Hard mode right now and am a bit dissapointed that it is rather easy. I'm already half way through and havn't died once yet. Previous to this I only completed Normal mode once and never farmed red orbs.

Eh, it's okay. After playing the camera abomination that was Onimusha 2 I even made it through Dino Crisis 3, and DMC's half-assed camera is way better than both of those. It's been pretty assy but hasn't bugged me too much because it hasn't caused my death yet (I've died a couple times because of my own screwups), and it's been fine for the bosses so far.

We'll see. ;) Basically they've haven't done much to allieviate the camera problems but having dealt with worse pain helps me to ignore it.

I thought I let him finish but maybe I did interrupt him. I tried a couple times while in the middle of battle and didn't see any effects, so I just ignored it and kept up with smacking everyone around.

THIS PARTY'S GETTING CRAZY!

OMG, why is that flying worm boss in the game? It's looks like a poor man's Otogi boss; it has the most simplistic pattern since the first boss of Ninja Gaiden 2, yet has a life bar so incredibly huge that it took like fifteen minutes (or at least felt like it) to kill despite it being so pathetic I only got hit when it suddenly tripled its speed and attacks when its life got low. ATTENTION GAME DEVELOPERS: If you're going to make a shitty, worthless boss, why not just not waste the time and effort making something no one likes so that we as players don't have to waste our time and effort playing that something which no one likes? Just don't put a boss there. It's actually better to do nothing than to do something detrimental.

Thank the gods the next boss was all kinds of sweet and shit, those two lunatics were fun as hell to fight and they gave up an awesome pair of swords. I haven't gotten a chance to use them yet because of the pudding wrestling but Dante looked pretty damn pimp twirling them around like a head cheerleader.

You know, I really wish I could think of a better analogy than that but my brain isn't working well enough right now. He does look cool whipping them around, I just can't think of anything besides a cheerleader that twirls stuff around. Well, there's always one of those rhythmic gymnasts but that doesn't really sound much better. "Dante, he's so badass he puts other rhythmic gymnasts to shame!" Fuck this, I'll think of something better tomorrow.

I also hope I get to play as the female version of Kaneda at some point, she was awesome when she went all fucking Ryuhei Kitamura on the ghosties. They better have stuck her ass in there, or else I might whine about it uselessly on a message board. Yeah, TAKE THAT, CAPCOM!

Anyway, yeah, this game is getting better. I hope the difficulty starts ramping up, because this reminds me of Xbox Ninja Gaiden: A decent action game where the flaws stand out because it tries to be so much more than it is, but a huge heaping dose of difficulty makes it sweet as fuck. NG didn't come alive until the Hurricane Packs and I think DMC3 would really come alive if they piled on the enemies and upped the challenge.

Also, how does the whole counter system work? Every once in a while I'll notice the screen flashes and my sword gets knocked away (and I think the same happens to whatever boss I'm fighting) but I have no clue how to use that to get the upper hand, I just get smacked if I don't dive away. There's gotta be a way to use that to my advantage but I'm not even sure what causes it.

There really is no counter system unless you choose Royal Guard and parry.

For Agni and Rudra, if you counter their sword twice it will go flying, and you can do insane damage to them as they are left kneeling on the ground helpless. As for the ghouls with the scyths (they glow blue and one got his shit ruined by Vergil), you can knock against their scyth, but this will only let you know it is time to jump behind them so you won't get hit.

I am almost done with Hard mode and it is just too easy. DMD better ramp it up very hard. Also, apparently the US version has taken out the infinite continue system, which is present in the JP DMC3 version, and gone back to the DMC1 way where you have to use yellow orbs. Now I have only found 3 yellow orbs in both my playthroughs, so I hope they put a lot more in.

But Gunslinger is so good and parrying should be a permanant normal move. :( I've already got it to lv2 (because I was trying to something impossible in the clock tower so I kept cycling through a couple groups of enemies over and over), once it's maxed out I'm going to check out the sword style and see if I can't get the hang of that one. Cool, thanks. I was doing that but I wasn't really sure how, making it a bit of a crapshoot for me. The camera was pretty asstacular in that area since I hovered in the air for like 90% of the fight and so couldn't ever see what I was attacking, which just made it that much harder to tell if it had to be done to interrupt certain moves or what.

I have Trickster, Swordmaster, and Gunslinger at Lv 3 right now. Wall Hike (the one where he just runs up a wall) is pretty much always useless. At each level increase he can dodge one more time in conjuction. My favorite is at Lv 2 you get "Sky Star" which is basically Air-Hike except horizontal in any direction you like. Like I said it is my favorite and I use it all the damn time. Lv 3 you get "Air Trick" which allows you to disapear and reappear above an enemey (you choose which one by pressing the control stick in their direction + O). Frankly, I havn't used this much since I just stinger over to everything, but I'm sure it can be great.

Swordmaster is my favorite and I'm sure it will be for most, basically every weapon gets 1-2 new attacks each level. Get it to Lv 3, with two weapons equipped, and you basically gain about 5-10 new moves. It just really adds to your arsenal, and some of them are large radius attacks that hit a big group and just make your como meter sky rocket. At Lv 3 you get some that are "one slow hit = huge combo" type deal.

I like Gunslinger but rarely do I use anything but Ebony & Ivory (they are the only ones I have leveled up as of now).

I just beat Hard mode with all the secret missions, and will start DMD soon.

OK, after starting DMD mode, the switch up they did with the US version is a GOOD thing, it will lead you up the difficult ramp at a nice constant.

After finishing the wussy Hard mode in the JP version (which is now the US Normal Mode), moving to DMD mode is like falling down a flight of stairs and landing face first. I was playing Mission 2 for about an hour. You spend minutes just beating the shit out of some enemies they have SO MUCH LIFE.

Got to 17 last night, only because I got stuck on 15 or 16 for an hour. The one where you have to rotate the castle, I didn't realize you were supposed to grab items inside doors as you rotated so I went through the entire castle and ended up all the way back at the beginning of the game. I then had to go all the way back up and look for whatever I was missing, and once I realized what I was doing it only took a couple minutes.

I got Gunslinger up to lv3 and the only addition is Gunstinger, which IMO wasn't worth the effort. I'm now working on Trickster and Swordmaster and should hopefully be getting the Shinshoryuken for Beowulf soon, which is definately the best secondary weapon yet (although I missed a gun somewhere because there's a space after Aermis or whatever and before the rocket launcher). At least at lv1 Trickster isn't very good for normal enemies but that anywhere dash is pretty helpful for the bosses, especially during times when the camera changes around and left+jump for rolling has suddenly turned into back+jump which is not rolling and then I get hit. Extremely common during melee boss fights when the camera is whipping all around and I can't even tell where the walls are.

And there's yet another enemy type that flies around and clips through walls. God I hate those guys, even more annoying this time since Ebony & Ivory don't do dick to them.

I do love how the cutscenes keep getting more and more ridiculous as the game goes on, I would be all of zero suprised if the next scene had Dante using two dinosaurs as nunchucks or something. Crazy funny.

Oh the enemies do deal more damage, one hit is almost an entire bar. They arn't quicker, and there arn't more of them. They will block much more now and when a few are left they will go into DT mode and stay in it until they die. This is when it gets boring. In Mission 2 and 3 there were times where 2-3 enemies would be left, but they are too stupid to attack me, so I spend literally, at least a minute, just beating the shit out of one that is on the ground and can't get up.

I cannot imagine how boring this will get in the US version with the Yellow Orb system. I just found out you can only carry 3 Yellow Orbs (which is why I only found 3 I guess). I just beat Cerberus but had to fight him at least 15 times. See with the JP version I can just select continue and I will start right infront of the door to him. If I had to go back through that mission 15 times I would throw this game away.

At the same time, you can get 30 Vital stars S and 30 Vital Stars L so you COULD make this very easy (you will get a shit rank though, since using items is one of the rankings). Since you can select any mission and replay it, getting Red Orbs to buy them is no problem.

Are we sure Hard Mode isn't just an accidental relabel of Normal Mode (which is kinda funny since it is becoming the US version of Normal)? I haven't noticed any difference in the first five levels and Cerberus actually felt easier (well, I obviously didn't fight him like normal the first time but during the fight-every-boss-again stage I did). I also found that Beowulf absolutely annihilates the worm boss, so while he's still useless and can barely hit me at least I've figured out how to make him die in about a minute.

I'm also a bif miffed that I only got 99 out of the 100 enemies during the credit sequence, I only needed a couple more hits on that last ghoul. So very close...

Yea Hard mode is just a joke, with the huge life increase you get from playing through normal, and all the weapons, it probably IS easier.

For the worm boss, the best way to hurt him is to get on his back and hit him in the head, OR reflect those purple balls back at him with your sword. Those do the most damage. Even in DMD mode he was still a joke.

That's what I was doing with Beowulf, since its homing jump attack makes it incredibly easy to get on the back. Had no clue about reflecting the purple balls, though.

Anyone know if the game supports progressive scan? I'm on the fence about this game and proscan support will help me decide.

The Hurricane Packs are way tougher than anything in this game. Let's compare how in one game I had to struggle to live from one checkpoint to the next while in the other I collected health items for fun because I ran out of other things to spend orbs on, most of which I only did because I had long already powered up the few items I actually used. Hell, the first DMC beats the crap out of DMC3 in terms of difficulty, IIRC in DMC on Hard there was an early hallway where you fought two or three panthers at once; that was tougher then all of DMC3 put together.

Granted, I haven't gone through all the difficulty levels yet but that's just because I'd rather finish KOTOR II right now then continue playing yet more easy to find more meat.

Again, no. DMC had better bosses (as do a whole lot of games, but I won't bother whipping out a list). They are pretty cool as a whole, but three of them suck balls and another three are the same easy and simple one-trick pony.

It's still a good game, though: the switching-weapons combo system is pretty cool (even if unnessecary 90% of the time), the graphics are good for PS2, the cutscenes are often hysterical (generally from the sheer ridiculousness of it all), one level in particular is absolutely amazing in terms of visual design provided that you ignore how it makes zero sense in terms of progression (Why does a demon's intestine run from its mouth through its heart into its eyeball? And why is the eyeball hollow?), they've done away with a lot of long-range shooting and pecking that could be easily gotten away with in the first two (clearing out hallways of enemies without ever seeing them using the grenade launcher is now a thing of the past), and some of the bosses are cool.

On the other hand, it's ultimately too easy for its own good (though admittedly a couple of bosses will be harder to learn the patterns of without the quick continue), if the styles had each of their lesser or useless moves removed they could've been combined into a single control scheme which would've felt more like upgraded play mechanics, all the main combos are basically the same ones from DMC, and my final weapon selection ended up being the exact same loadout I used in the first game (although two of the weapons look different). But then, I imagine most fans of the series will be totally content to have what pretty much plays just like the first game.

It's not that DMC3 is bad or anything, but on a scale I would probably rate them DMC, DMC3, then DMC2 (I mainly put this one last because of no shit-talking, Lucia, and crap like the three heads boss). And one of the costumes you get is shirtless Dante, just in case you wanted that taste of homoeroticism from the beginning for the entire game. Not that anyone here would. Because we're all as straight as Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Vin Diesel put together. In a big pile. With no shirts on. And I'm pouring Crisco all over them.

I'm on mission 13/20 in DMD mode. It just isn't very fun because enemies are so boring to fight. It was DMD mode in DMC that had the 3-4 shadow cats, which IS toughter than anything I've done as of yet. DMD Nightmare 3 would destroy everything in this game and then have glass of milk.

Also, didn't Yellow orbs just bring you back to the last door you were at in DMC? Here they revive you right on the spot.

Not just DMD mode. One of the secret stages in DMC involved fighting 3 of those fuckers in a really narrow hallway = impossible w/o Holy Water.

You'll like it. Some areas are kinda bland but they obviously designed the tower to be like the castle in DMC but without any random leaving-the-area type deals like the Ghost Ship.

It's official: Either both GS' and IGN's reviewers have 100% completely and totally forgotten what it was like to play through DMC or Capcom completely overhauled the difficulty way more than just making Hard mode Normal.

Well I'm guessing you played hard after you beat it on normal which would mean you mastered most of the controls, and combos before starting hard, you also knew how each enemy acted and reacted which made it easier to begin with.

Now had you started on it right away perhaps you would of walked away with more of a challenge. Just a thought.

The controls and combos are the same as the prior two games and you start with a sword and Ebony & Ivory just like the prior two games. Have you played DMC and DMC2? Then all you need to learn is how to switch between weapons on the fly (which you can't even do until a couple missions in).

I picked the game up today, it's fun and thankfully more challenging than the 2nd.

Didn't get that far in though, I'm just up to the 3 headed Ice Dog boss who isn't too hard except for that full body lunge attack he does. My only beef is having to restart an entire mission....it blows.

Yeah, I picked up the game too. I'm not very far in, but I like it so far. I just beat the worm boss. I don't think the game is as hard as all the reviews make it sound. The first DMC still seems harder. With that said though, I don't think the game is a cakewalk by any means. It would be a lot easier, or at least seem a lot easier if you didn't have to redo an entire mission when you die at the boss. So far the missions have all been fairly short, so this isn't too big of a deal. The only complaint I really have is that the camera can be asstacular at times, but that's not surprising. Anyway, I like the game. Dante is a badass, and it's fun.

JP Version

- Infinite Continues, brings you back to the last door or shrine you passed.
- Max of 3 Yellow Orbs.
- Yellow Orbs cost 10,000 and max out at 30,000.
- Yellow Orb revives you right on the spot.

NA Version

- Normal = JP Hard mode.
- No Infinite continues.
- Unlimited Yellow Orbs (probably 99 max).
- Yellow Orbs cost 1,000 and max at 3,000.
- Yellow Orb starts you back at the beginning of the room.

I just beat Vergil without getting hit once and it was still a challenging match.

Also, the cinematic intro to Mission 8 is fuggin cool. I laughed at the end when that floating snake..thing ate him

I had a really hard freakin' time with the ice dog. I must've replayed the first 2 levels like 6 times on each difficulty trying to get my shotgun leveled up enough to kill him.

I never played the first 2 games, so that might be why I am having a hard time with this one.

The mission five boss is really kicking my ass right now.

Shotgun requires fairly close range, at which point you should be using the sword anyway. A pretty useless weapon for that battle.
