HDTV

I'm not sure where this thread should be, but the XM radio post is in here.

So, I want to jump on the HDTV wagon. I'm ready to play Prime and my xbox games in Prog Scan, and to see espn's HDTV NHL broadcasts in perfect clarity.

But...what should I get? And let's keep the price under....4,000? 3,000?
What's the best bang for the buck, if I'm to use it for gaming andtv.
Please give me your opinions.

I have a Samsung DLP that's 50" widescreen... it's plenty of TV, and it was $2600. It's also what I use as my computer monitor now. I have my PC, DVD, VCR, PS2, Xbox, AND GameCube all hooked up to it. It looks sweet with everything that's through component. The only problem is that HD service in my area is $10 a month on top of getting digital cable (which I don't have), so I don't have TV in HD. But everything else is great.

You've left it pretty wide open. It totally depends on what you want.

If you want the absolute best picture for games, movies, and TV, a CRT HDTV is the way to go (especially for games). With a CRT, though, about as big as you'll find is 42", and the units are heavy as hell.

If you want pure size, projection / DLP TVs are good and really not much more than a CRT HDTV, though they can get a ton bigger. I personally don't like projection TVs at all, though, especially for games. They look good with sports and movies, though.

And then there's plasma, which looks almost as good as CRT, is a ton less bulky, can get bigger screens, but costs a shitload more. On top of that, they have a pretty limited lifespan from what I've heard. I wouldn't spend my there even if I had it, unless I really just wanted the TV itself to look cool.

My personal choice would always be a CRT. Something like this.

I went over some dude's house yesterday and he had this gorgeous Panasonic HDTV. I jizzed my pants right then and there.

I wish Voom didn't have the "setup" fee... if they had some deal to wave that, I'd be all over it since it's the same price as regular fucking cable in my area.

Not tall like a RP or CRT's
Smooth film like picture (on the better units) with no screen door effect
Reasonably priced. Much more then CRT's or RP but less then LCD's and Plasmas
Reasonable depth
Light, easy to move
Quite operation
Long bulb life
Large screens
TV NEVER fades, bulb burns out - put in a new one and it is like day 1
No burn in, ever
