I was wondering if there's anyone with good advice or experience on this. I've been having regular phone conversations with this one Japanese girl, and she seems to not mind talking to me and we have interesting chats, but I'm finding it hard to read whether it's because she's all that interested or what. She seems to agree to a lot of things I say or suggest (e.g. like I suggest I'll call her at this time, or suggest we should go on vacation together), and I'm not at all sure if it's because she really wants to or it's just what Japanese chicks do (as I've heard), so it's hard for me to gauge what I should be doing too.

Um...how did you meet this girl? Have you met her, or is this someone you bumped into in a chat room? And where do you live?

Take the initiative, dude. If she's agreeing to going on vacations, you've got a definite shot. Saying "Japanese woman" is like saying "western woman" - it's not like there are rules that work for all of them. In the short-term, the Pacific Ocean will be more challenging to overcome than cultural issues. I dated women of all races in college. You'll start running into cultural differences (which depends on your ability to adapt) long after things get serious, when you have to hang out with her family a lot more.

If she had been living in America, then I could see her being confusing to read. Once Japanese girls get Americanized, they become more like American girls and you never know what exactly it is that they want. If she's never stepped foot off of her island, and you're having trouble reading her, I've got to say that I would be 95% certain that she either isn't interested in that kind of thing with you, or you're going to have to go a looooooooooong way to convince her to be. The thing is, Japanese girls, when they are being naturally friendly, can seem like they might be interested in you. The mistake we round eyes make is that we think that means that they are interested in us. That just means that they are friendly. If you were to ask her to become your sweetie, I'd bet dollars to donuts that she'd straight out tell you she has no interest.

If she's Japanese, and she's stayed in Japan, then if she likes you and/or wants to hump you, you'll know. Simple as that. If you have to ask, then she probably doesn't.

I think Japanese girls are born and bred to deal with Japanese men, and when you take them out of that environment and have them deal with a different type of guy, most can't deal and turn psycho.

If you've ever seen the movie Audition, that's how I see most Japanese girls turning out given the slightest nudge by some outside force. *heh*

You know what? While it's still hilarious, and might have once been true, I think most of us here are now pretty normal, balanced human beings.

We're at a point where we're seeing a pretty big backlash on the ultra-hardcore crowd, and are now leaning more to not casual or mainstream gamers, but maybe educated ones. We know what we like, what's good, and have less crazy biases than we used to.

What is the dividing line between "casual" and "hardcore?" I mean, I spend a good amount of my income on games, and I play probably at least 2 hours a day, (From midnight til 2 a.m., after the day is over, unless I'm too tired.) but I frequently play more than that. I read game news and "obviously" post on this game board. I don't think I'm hardcore. (Click_Stick was fucking hardcore man. I DO have almost every system. Most people here have 2 of the 3 current systems at least, and I be most of us have played over 200 games in their lifetime. (Not completed, played.)
I think I'd describe this forum more along the lines of mzo. We're educated gamers, for the most part. We know a little more than the guy down the hall who's bought every madden game since 2000 and nothing else. And we care.
It's nice to have a group of people whose opinions I can respect, and who I can count on for knowledge, advice, and....dare I say it? Companionship?

Eh I think gamers I are learning that it isn't cool to be crazy insane into a game. Most of us all still put way to much time and money into games, but gone are the days of ranting about how awesome <insert old game here> is.

You only have to see so many 14 year olds talk on and on about how cool FF7 is to realize making a big deal out of a game you love, all the time, isn't cool if not annoying to others.

Of corse we still have the odd poster who acts that way, but they get over it, or leave.

You know, it's wierd, I've thought about hurting myself but it's always wanted to be for some sort of an audience and not because I did poorly on a test or I'm fat or whatever. Shidoshi sort of touched on this but I think a lot of girls drive themselves crazy. There is an ideal of a woman that they think they must be, and then there is the reality of what they are as a person. A lot of them go completely nuts trying to be both and make themselves believe they are both.

More than once I've had a girl do completely horrible things to me but in around the world not obvious way just so they can look like the "good" ideal woman, and yet really be the insane bitch that they "feel" like being.

I'm so glad I'm a male and can do all sorts of retarded and mean things with out it effecting my own idea of what my worth is. Me and the rest of men are kind of dumb in that way, but it works out for the best. We usally only connect our positve actions with who we are, and all the bad actions with something outside of ourselfs.

Hmm...can you be more specific about what you mean? My experience has pretty much been:

• (Non-bitchy) Japanese women are less likely to give you a hard time - not the submissive geisha girl stereotype, but not all up in your face either. Japanese people in general are ridiculously easy to get along with.

• After age 22 they're desperate to get married, which can lead to trouble, but they're still people. If something's not working only the true psychos will get all clingy and desperate.

• They feel entitled to run certain areas of your life - having to do with money and responsibility, generally, because that's the role they're expected to play in their culture.

• They have no career ambitions, because they aren't allowed to. There are roughly 4 acceptable career paths for women, and if they're still working after their first child, they're forced to feel a) if hot, they made a poor marriage choice, or b) are a feminist. So they want you to support them while they stay home. (This is changing slowly).
  -
• They wear weird outfits.
  -
• Many of them have...questionable oral hygiene.

Other than that, any problems haven't been anything I haven't encountered with western women, who, as has been pointed out, are as capable of turning irrational at the drop of a hat as anyone, maybe moreso.

No, I totally agree with that. I also agree that he needs to be really careful about getting worked up about a girl he hasn't known for very long, especially hasn't know in person for very long. Not necessarily hygiene, but just look at some pictures. There is a frighting amount of them that look like they have bear traps for mouths. Check out kill bill vol. 1 where the 5,6,7,8's are playing. There's a quick close up of one of them that will make you do a double take.

I'd rather say wierd shit to people when I just want to get a reaction (which I do, usually to the joy of those who know me as well), the whole crazy hurting myself thing is just stuff I think of while bored at work. Once me and a couple other guys all sat around talking about trying to top each other with the most fucked up thing we could do to a customer, it can get really boring during some months.

Besides, there's absolutely no way in hell I can dress wierder then a couple of the guys that already hang around our street, they're like abominations of Hollywood-styled drag queens (but not gay, mind you). Feather headdresses, sequined clothes, army boots, etc.
