Regarding the Atari 800 DK Mario- When you kill him and pause the game during the death animation, he looks like a smashed bug.
The GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong sprite is a disgrace.
Donkey Kong on Amstrad CPC looks quite close and is probably the best version you'd see on an 8-bit. Here are 2 shots of it including the cement factory stage that got cut from many versions.
