I read it and I enjoyed it.
It was neat to see it all laid out like that.
I really like the "Mario & Wario" Mario, too bad that game never made it here. The rom I played of it did not work right and it seemed really interesting.
nice article, neo. i was going to mention that you forgot the paper mario "sprite", but it looks like you added it since yesterday.
Paper Mario and 1+3 Allstars are my faves.
Very cool! I liked it a lot. I did notice a couple things that I thought I should point out.
1."The SNES versions of Super Mario Bros 1, 2 and 3 are considered the definitive Marios."
I don't agree with this comment. Although they are clearly the nicest looking versions of those games, they shure aren't the nicest playing. Anyone who spent as much time with SMB(NES) as I did(and I'm sure there are a ton of you) can easily pick out how they busted the controls in the "All Stars" version. Try this on the NES & SNES versions for a perfect example: Go to any level you want and try to run at full speed under a block that is just above full grown(though you don't need to be full grown for this example) Mario's head. As soon as you get passed it, try jumping backwards up onto the block. It can be done with ease on the NES but not so on the SNES. This is a small gripe but with a game that had such perfect controls it makes me not want to play the graphically superior version.
2. You mentioned games that Mario cameod in but you left out the original NES Golf(that was Mario right?) and Mike Tyson's Punch Out where Mario was the ref. I really bring this up because both of these games had a different Mario sprite.
Either way, the site is very cool. Thanks for the history lesson.
Cool site.
I'm partial to Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World Mario sprites.
And in your "Mario's Shame..." section, the Intellivision sprite is pretty damn close to the original Mario sprite from Donkey Kong arcade and Donkey Kong Jr. arcade. I don't think that's a shame at all.[/intellivision fanboyism]
Anyone have any impressions about SFC Wrecking Crew '98?
I've always wanted to try it.
The definitive Mario sprites, not games. I don't talk about gameplay throughout the entire article.Quote:

I left out a lot of games, Mario's got cameos in quite a few games. There are pages devoted to these appearances. Way, way beyond the scope of this article. =) Glad you liked the article otherwise.Quote:

Sorry it was unclear, this is the INTV version of Mario. An abomination indeed:

It's the 4th from the left and it's an abomination.Quote:

Atari 800 (Donkey Kong (1st Mario) + Mario Bros(2nd Mario))
Colecovision (3rd Mario)
Intellivision (4th Mario)
Commodore 64 (5th Mario)
Atari 2600 (6th Mario)
You just read it wrong.
Oops! My bad. :chick:Quote:

And the definitive mario sprite has got to be NES SMB. I mean come on. That's by far the most well recognized mario game ever, and I'm sure the vast majority of the people here were first introduced to him via this game. When I think mario sprite, that's the one I instantly jump to.
Awesome article. :)
I know you didn't plan on including everything but here are some additional things you may or may not know about:
There are actually two C64 versions of DK. I think the sprite you took is from Ocean's 1986 Euro release. Atarisoft's 1983 version is different. Atari also released Mario Bros. on the C64.
The Vic 20 DK sprite is pretty messed up to look at too(but at least this version had all the levels).

Oh, and does anyone know where I can find pics of Super Mario World's prototype? I remember EGM showing the first pic of the game and it looked a lot different than the final version.

It does features the return of Foreman Spike (aka Blackey), Mario's rival from the original Wrecking Crew (who is long overdue for another comeback in my opinion).
That's just Wario with a different hat!
They have the same nose, but Wario's moustache is way different.Quote:

Would be awesome if you did another page based on Mario's cameos =D
Awesome work. :tu:

Read and enjoyed it. Thanks, NGM.
Regarding the Atari 800 DK Mario- When you kill him and pause the game during the death animation, he looks like a smashed bug.
The GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong sprite is a disgrace.
Donkey Kong on Amstrad CPC looks quite close and is probably the best version you'd see on an 8-bit. Here are 2 shots of it including the cement factory stage that got cut from many versions.
Thats really good, someone did their homework didnt they!
God how things have changed eh!
I totally dug it man, good show.
Side note: The jumpman/Mario sprite from the Colecovision Donkey Kong was spot on. The others in that category suck, but that ONE was just dandy.

The third one in.
He may be pale and have hair that is a little too blue, but come on.
*hugs colecovision*
Agreed. The original conceptual version of the game (Donkey Kong Plus) looked way better in comparison.Quote:

BTW, Colecovision rocks. :) Ah the memories...
