Bah, no sweat man.

And yeah, I still have all of my retro gaming gear too. I catch a lot of comments from friends when they see my room/gaming set-up or something for the first time - "OMG - You still have one of those! WTF ". A lot of the poeple I hang out with are casual gamers at best so I get that line a lot.

actually, if you hook up a s/nes pad to a decent PC and emulate, its very hard to tell the difference.

Plus you don't have to blow untill your blue in the face on a rom file to get it to play.

/has a NES that works perfectly, still uses nester on his HTPC.

Maybe it isn't so bad having emulators, but I got a genesis, NES, a SNES and a Colleco (made in 1984, about $10 from a car boot sale), and I don't regret having bought any of them; they will only ever increase in value, until they break that is, and for the time being they are great.
Besides, spending half an hour blowing an old game is half the fun of a retro console.

If you lack the money, save up for a little while- or buy it secondhand. Games that are currently in print and being used as breadwinners by the manufacturer and retailers should not be P2Ped or downloaded. Doing so cuts into sales numbers and the developer/publisher profit, meaning the potential sequel may not be greenlighted. There are some good freeware/doujin games out there, so look around for them.

Emulators like those for 16/32 bit stuff and MAME are not real issues, since most games supported by them are abandonware. If by luck certain games do reappear on compilations, I'll buy them.

Pirates are a reason for these hasslesome protection schemes.
