Dude, he goes from wanting to kill Palp for being a Sith Lord and turning him into the Jedi one second to cutting off Mace's hand and slicing and dicing The Junior Jedi Adventure Squad the next. Once again, I agree that the seeds were planted earlier in the series, but not for anything THIS extreme. As someone pointed out in this thread, these actions were one of someone that was inherently evil and vile to begin with, not someone that had problems and simply made the "wrong decision." And that goes against what Lucas was trying to do with Anakin- he wanted to show him as someone who had a dark side, but wasn't a totally evil person, someone that could be redeemed.
I think you might enjoy the novel a lot. There is a lot more insight into what is going on in Anakin's head. It explains even more why he thinks he can make being evil and "creating his own reality" work for he & padme and also gives a clear picture of his impression of the emperor who he completely hates. It's the power man, it's so tempting. Part of him wants to kill Sidious and turn him in and just forget the nightmares, the other part of him still wants that power to keep Padme protected, again, he is forced to choose.
