Is it worth it anymore?

I have a pretty decent collection spaning across alot of systems. And a long time ago when games I wanted first came out, you better believe I had my 50 bucks to buy the game. Now with so many games come out so fast and six months later a 50 dollar game drops down to 20 bucks is it worth buying the game when it comes out or just wait for the cheaper price? Some games this season i'm jumping on like MGS3 and GTA:SA, but games like Jak3 and Ratchet and Clank coming and I know they are going to drop fast, wouldn't it better to wait for all?

It's just about priorities and what you want to spend your money on really. If I really want to play a game I get it day one, if I kind of maybe want to play a game, I only get it if it's cheap.

Well, when the game comes out do you want to play it really badly? If you do then I guess it would be worth buying. But if the game you are currently playing it outweighing the current release then just wait. These games arn't going to diapear or anything. And pretty much every one of the big releases coming out in the next two months will at some point become Greatest Hits.

Im the same as Opaque, if i really want the game then i will be queing outside my local Game with £40 clutched tightly but if im imming and amming about it i usually wait until its cheaper or i can find it preowned which is usually a third of the RRP.

There's so many games that have come out recently though that you could easily find enough games to keep you entertained until a current release drops in price, unless its something like GTA:SA that's going to stay $50 for a long time.

The last few games I've bought new when they came out were $20, $15, and $30 each. I'm fine buying right away at that price :)

Unless I really, really want to play the game Right This Very Second!!!, or possibly there's a cool pre-order to go with it (free Shadow Hearts w/ SH:Covenant being a good example) I'm willing to let it wait until I get to it. I'm overloaded with games right now, I've got no reason at all to buy something just to see it sit in the plastic wrap waiting to be played.

I'll agree with MarkRyan on the cheap-o releases, $15 and $20 games are far more likely to come home with me quick than a $50 one, but for me $30 is right on the verge of letting it wait until I'm ready for it. Gradius V would have been an insta-purchase no matter what the price, Alien Hominid... maybe in a week or two.

Part of the fun of the hobby (for me) is anticipating new games, and getting my hands on them on day 1 -- much like going to see a new movie on release. For whatever reason, I rarely wind up finishing a game that I pick up way after its initial release. Maybe it's just the psych-out of knowing that it's no longer the "latest greatest" thing. Lame, perhaps, but true for me.

I can't come up with all that many games that I *have* to have as soon as they come out anymore. I buy some stuff more on the fear that I might not see it around in 6 months than for having to have it immediately.

With my current purchase of a new desktop, I'm going to have to wait out games. However, if the game is going to be a blockbuster title then I pick it up day one. Only ones that are going to have me do that are MGS3 and Metroid Prime 2. Capcom Fighting Evolution and Resident Evil 4 may wait a bit.

I have no choice come this November...there are games coming out that month that alone would be the sensation of a whole month otherwise. It's a veritable orgy of A-class games. But sacrifices must be made. Metal Gear Solid 3 and PoP2 have to wait if I don't have the funds.

If I dont buy a game right away I usually wont end up buying it at all. I usually lose interest in playing a game if I wait for it to drop in price. Because by the time the price drops Ive seen a dozen reviews and previews and cheats and spoiler to just not give a shit about a game anymore. But I may buy a game only if I have nothing better to do and nothing new has come out for a while.

If it's $30 and under at launch, odds are, I'll get it on day one. Other than that, 99% of the games I buy wait for price drops. Thanks to them occuring so quickly, unless I'm dying to play it, there's no real reason not to wait a month or two to save $20.

One of the first casualties of the season- Second Sight, $20. Not that I care about it or anything, but that was really quick.

No way, that was fast. Is the game any good? I haven't bought a game at $50 for a long time, and I traded a bunch of crap in just for Donkey Konga so I didn't have to front any $$ for it.

For me it depends on how much I want that game. If it's one I truly can't wait for, I'll pay the new price (Gotta have my Crisis Zone, Neo Contra, Out Run 2, & Chaos Field). Some other games that sound a little interesting I'll wait for the price drop on.

As for imports it's best to pick them up right away lest they become "presold out". Such was the story for XII Stag.

I'm still waiting for the GC to hit 50 bucks, and the games a max of 20 bucks.

If all games became $20 all the time people would eventually bitch that they were to expensive. Remember when new games ran $60 on average? Now new games can usually be found $40-50 all the time. All I'm saying is theres LOTS of us who will always pay more than we should for a new game and there will always be people that bitch that they are to exspensive.

For future reference, people who pay 'more than they should' = stupid. I've done it myself, years ago, and that was about the point I realized it was lame.

If it's not worth the asking price to you, it's time to use the willpower and wait until it is worth the price for you.

Unless I have a huge backlog of unplayed games, I buy almost every big new release at launch day.

It's entirely dependent upon the individual game's release and (future) development circumstances.

I personally spend a lot of money on new releases, but I don't bat an eye about it. At least I'm not buying new AES games anymore.

I guess if I felt buyers guilt about paying $50 for a game I would care but usually I know the game I'm buying will justify the $50.

Plus with me buying games at $50 it shows game companies fools are willing to pay anything for their games and that they can keep the prices up for everyone else. SO HA! Its my fault you guys have to wait for prices to come down! :D

I only buy budget or preowned. Only games I paid full price for (EVER) were the Zelda games. I have the patience to wait for however long it must be.

I dont get the point in buying preowned games from stores like EB. Everytime I see anything preowned there the prices are so damn high. c'mon, $44.99 for a used game? Eat shit. I'll pay $5 for a new one. Used games would be worth it if I could buy em for half the price a new one is.

I'm afraid to buy games like Prince of Perisa 2 and Jak 3 or Ratchet and Clank because I know they are going to drop in price. They did for the ones before them. I get pissed sometimes cuz i got games like PoP and Legacy of Kain for 50 bucks and now they are so cheap. Yeah I know they are good games but still, I can buy more games when they are cheaper

I do not really think so. Games can not get lower than that as a rule- the $10 titles are generally an exception. There's a limit to reasonable expectations.

Ripped off? Nah. One's "blah title" is another's most-played game. I usually consider RPG's blah, even though there are some good ones out there. Gran Turismo may be good but I consider it one of my personal blahs since it's just not my type of racer.

Now used games are a rip if they cost JUST $5 less than the new price. A preowned title should go for maybe 25% off new. That would likely leave people who trade games in at EB getting less than they do, but patient people in the know can do better on eBay.

I don't get things when they first come out. I play games that I already have and wait a few weeks for the new game I want to drop price.

I've hardly paid full price for anything since last year, since things drop so fast.

It is seriously worth it to buy used. You are getting the same product, with a better warranty, for less money. Why reason could you have to spend more, other than being totally anal?

Totally anal? Speaking just for myself, I'd rather spend $5 more to ensure that my game won't be scratched to high heaven, and to have the enjoyment of knowing that I'm the first one to play that copy of the game. Plus, no used stickers, or any of that shit, which can fuck up other cases if you try and remove them. Plus, you get to support the publisher and developer of the product.

It's worth it if the game won't drop price for awhile. Halo 2, GTA: SA, any game EA puts out, anything Square brings out, usually this shit won't drop price for a good long while.

If you're that interested in the game, made as well pony up the extra cash instead of making yourself wait 6 months.

Also, if it's a small release, worth it to get it early instead of having to search for it all over the place.

But everything else drops price quickly. Games you're usually not sure about, just wait a month or two, and it'll drop.

buying new big release games is retarded. You are basically wasting 30 bucks right there. The same goes for movies.

Pawn shops are full of big title games and movies. Right now I can go to any pawn shop and get any big release movie for about 6 bucks on dvd. I can also get any big release game for 20 on the ps2 and xbox, 10 to 12 if it is the gamecube. Just go once a week, and eventually the big title game/movie you want will be there.

Niche stuff however is another story. Gay fan boys stock pile niche games. So if you want something weird, or an RPG, you are better off getting it as soon as you can. You rarely see either of those on the cheap, anywhere. A house has to be robbed before you see those titles.

Just like I am for not selling books that I've read and enjoyed, or the odd DVD or two that I own.

I've nothing against getting rid of crap but over the years I've stopped buying it, so I now keep about 95% of everything. Why would I buy it in the first place if I didn't want it enough to keep?

Most jap quirk games are utter shit, Katamari Damacy is the exception of a life time, and you should fucking try it.

Whenever I've wanted a game, I've often bought it on or close to day 1, regardless if I could live without it or not. But seeing that Syphon Filter: Omega Strain just dropped to $19.99 this past week and I got it back in May for $39.99 ($49.99 actually but it came with free $10 CC gift card) and it's STILL sitting on my pile of shame 5 months later, I'm beginning to question it.

So I'm gonna try and curb this to games I only really want at their release and have to play, or games with really swank deals going on (like the Shadowhearts: Covenant deal mentioned earlier). Of course, the TRU deal coming next week will likely make me renege on this yet again *sigh*

Pretty much my philosophy. Must get games on my list warrant day 1 purchase. Everything else is either wait for price drop, or rental.

I think a very important thing to consider when trying to prioritize purchases is the online play. GTA:SA I don't have to buy now, because in 6 months or a year or whatever the game experience will be the same. I'll get it if I really crave some GTA, but I don't have to.
For online games there is typically more interest nearer to the release, and if you care about rankings, you probably want to get in early.
That said, I still bought Paper Mario immediately.

Why that article is crap reason #1 (and most important): I don't want other peoples used shit. I take better care of stuff than people who end up selling it.

Anyways, I always like to support the makers of games so if it is a highly anticipated title I will usually pay asking price. Most of these games have luckily come out at $30 or less so bonus on me. If I am partially interested in a game or just curious I will usually wait for at least a $10 price drop.

If a game is destined to be rare I will pick it up if it interests me. Katamari is the current game like this. I cannot tell you what it was like to try to find REZ PS2. Thank god for rereleases. Culdcept was another.

Fable has taught me one thing: don't bother with big releases. The only exception is if my little circle of friends are playing it too and it becomes a communial thing like Morrowind. Where entire conversations are held around the construct of what we did with our Morrowind Barbie today.

Otherwise minor releases like Katamari will get the go ahead on day one. Niche shit, definitely get that earily. Its pretty much hit or miss with that, but I'm a little wary of getting Halo2 on release even now after Fable.

Put aside your anticipation and objectively judge its likeliness to go down in price quickly, and whether that $30 difference is worth a playing it a couple of months before everyone else.

Anyone who didn't see a game like Second Sight dropping like it did so quickly deserves to have their $30 taken. It did so in a shorter time than I would have guessed, but it was painfully obvious it was gonna wind up an early casualty of the holiday season.

I stopped buying games for full price long ago. However, from time to time I will pay close to full price for a high profile game (ie. Halo 2, Zelda, Mario, etc.) when they have those 'first week' sales.

It's a game to game basis. I have actually found myself getting rid of games I haven't even played just because I know I'm never going to get around to them. My new motto is that unless I plan on playing it right away, or if it's at an incredibly low price, I wait.
I didn't read all of this thread, but I think like most people I have so many games just sitting there that there is no rush. Besides, I actually like to enjoy what I have (Like Paper Mario 2. Sucks the time like a mosquito drinking blood).

I reckon if you take a look at some media and information on a game and decide you must have then it will taste better when bought and played day one. Otherwise don't buy it at all, at any price!

Im actually looking forward to Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal. I understand that with a bunch of new games comming out that they may be over shadowed. I believe that Ratchet and Clank have a big following and now with it online, it is sure not to be forgotten. That alone gives it a tremendous replay value not to mention at least 5 levels and game modes for online play. Plus they did switch the release date to November 2nd so it doesnt come out with Halo. I would check it out for sure.
