I thought so.
Oh. Its possible that is a successor, except those games were made for a long time. I like them more than beat-em-ups anyway.Quote:
Dungeon Keeper is a strategy game, he means more like Diablo or Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (where all you do is crawl through dungeons or whatever and kill everything).
except it's not a beatem up. it's baldurs gate:da with xmen characters.Quote:

Theres a difference between saying theyre shit and saying theyre not as good as todays. I said the latter. I think the former is true, too, but thats a less defensible position.
Ill opt for whatever. Its all good.Quote:

oh i love how easy it is to piss you off. turn the blind eye son.
Whatever you want to call stuff like Baldur's Gate DA on PS2/X-Box, ROLW on DC....you know with those action RPG elements in them and built up walls.Quote:

And Castlevania... cmon now. I really enjoyed it, but I can easily list about 10 flaws for it.
Japanese developers make these games, so yea, I'm going to say Japanese developers are the reason they fucking suck on next gen consoles.
Yeah, I wasn't completely happy with XML in all regards, but overall I think it's much more solid than SoR or any old-school beat-em-up.Quote:

To me, XML legends feels more like the old 4-player arcade game, with all the new bells and whistles (and boring mansion fluff).
Genre definition has always been difficult and almost always arbitrary. If a beat-em-up is simply a game where you go around kill all the enemies and bosses using fighting techniques...then I'd say the new Ninja Gaiden fits the bill and blows away SoR. Otogi/Otogi 2 are also very reminiscent of beat-em-ups in their design, and I'd say the edge inarguably goes to newer games in that case too.
So...to eventually answer your question, no, I don't think Dungeon Crawlers really succeeded beat-em-ups...but I do think that beat-em-ups are too simple and limited in definition to stand against newer "genres". In other words, any of the fun I could derive from a beat-em-up (typically, beating up a bunch of bad guys), I can get in a better experience in a newer game.
If anything succeeded beat-em-ups, it was full-fledged fighting games. Although, one could make an argument for modern beat-em-ups like Dynasty Warriors 4 and Kingdom Under Fire as well...and perhaps the upcoming Berserk and Altered Beast games.
