Beat-em-ups can encompass many different parts of gameplay, but the definition I go on for them is based on length. If it's long enough to where I can see myself beating it in one sitting at an arcade, then it's a traditional-style beat-em-up. Then you have the hack-n-slash style, like Golden Axe. NG could, arguably, be a descendent of this style of play, but the noted length I've seen for it keeps it out of the traditional beat-em-up genre name, as do the puzzle elements. Genres blending together is certainly more prominent now than before, which has the potential to be really awesome.
