Hey, I agree with you. The title of the show has more to do with each character than the actual setting. Shannon was 'lost' when her dad died. Hurley became 'lost' when he won the lottery. Ana Lucia is still 'lost', the one second she let her guard down still haunting her. And so on.

But I have to admit the island's story is exceedingly intriguing. The army knife AL found on the dead Other makes me think that the whole 'Orientation' reel is bullshit. What would a US Army knife be doing in a privately held research operation?

Also, I think I'm the only one on the planet who likes Ana Lucia's character. We found out why she is so hardcore about everything. Why she threw Nathan in the pit. Why she is so rigid and cold. Why she shot first at Shannon, and didn't wait the second or two that could have prevented her death.

Mr. Eko is even better. A clearly religious man with a violent past. The 40 days of silence for murder, and how anxious he got when he saw the stockpile in the hatch? All the while being able to kick ass and take names? I can't wait to see his backstory.

Oy, I have gotta stop missing the show on Wednesday. Still the torrents are amazing quality. I just copy and send them to a disc using the generic XP CDR wizard and they look great on my Phillips progressive scan.

Episode 8 was very good.

-Flashback scenes were very well done (Ana is like 5 LA police beating video tapes waiting to happen and takes vengeance waaaaaaay too fair)

-I feel sorry for Ana for losing her child and all, but she is one crazy, trigger happy broad. I hope they let her cool off in the jungle a bit before they let her into camp.

-Good to see everyone enjoying a game of golf.

-You can really tell the characters care about each other a lot more, hugs all around.

-I really hope Kate and Jack don't end up together as Lindelof hinted they may since Sawyer seems more suited to her. She really seemed to care about him a little more than usual when getting him to take the antibiotic and whispering in his ear.

-Eko is the man again, I just love how he stared down Ana with his expressive eyes. "I'm leaving, I'm taking him with and I am doing it for myself. You got a problem with that? Oh sorry. Goodbye." Ana has some nerve expecting them all to just aimlessly sit there yards from the camp after killing one of their friends and showing her usual contempt for Sawyer's life.

Jin, Sun, Bernard and Rose are finally reunited. Awesome. Now let's see Walt returned.

Go watch the end of season one again, when you see the monster go through the trees and rip them up. It's a dark cloud of dust/magic/bugs/nanomachines/whatever and this object is the same density and color.

It's not hard to put two and two together and figure out that the creaters wanted to be able to go back in the end and say that they showed us the monster in the first episode.

My brother (who got me hooked on the show) just bought season 1 and called me on Thursday insisting he saw more of the "shadows" (i swear there is at least a little bit of Babylon 5 influence to this series) hoving over pieces of the wreckage in the opening chaos scenes. He also slow mo'ed the part where the man is sucked into the fuselage and says a 'dark shape' is running into him.

I'd check this out myself but I just loaned my S1 set to a friend (to get him to stop watching Surface :lol: ) Once I get it back I will take a looksee.

And I completely agree that the creators put little things in like this deliberately for the more observant folks like us. In Babylon 5 there are all kinds of little "reward" clues in S1 and 2 which later on in S3-5 make you say "Ohhhh, so that's why..." and at the same time, the show was still enjoyable and perfectly understandable even if you didn't pay attention to the little "pay off" hints.

The writers do not give a damn about casual viewers like you and do not have your limited needs in mind when they script a story for the show. An arc is hard enough to write as it is but they only have so much pre-written story to work with, plus an arc without careful character development is pointless.

The plot is progressing just fine considering we have new and interesting characters whose backstories are just as deep as anyone else's on the island (ana lucia is annoying but her flashback was 10X better than Michael's as an example and I can't wait to see Eko's flashbacks). It's called an "arc-based" show. You have to be patient. If you don't like it, go watch a more self contained show like Star Trek or CSI where the plot ends/is "solved" every week and the bad guys are caught/peace is made at the end of each episode.

Lindelof, Fox and other people on the crew have stated adamantly many times in interviews that there IS a cause for everything, it is not random, and we WILL know what it is. Ya just gotta be patient, it's a "slow" moving show yes, but again, that's the way arc-based shows are. It took forever on Babylon 5 before folks got to find out certain crucial details to many of the plot points but they eventually tied together. Unless the writers make some major changes to the arc or poor decisions which aren't executed well, then we will be in trouble. For now, every thing seems to be going slowly yet steadily towards a real pre-set destination.

Interesting shit is happening on the island and the show barely mentions any of it in the episode. That = boring. Bullshit that the show isn't about the island. There needs to be some fucking medium between backstories and main story.

I will again use the example of Babylon 5:

In S4 of B5 there was a "Shadow cloud monster made up of little nanites" which destroyed an entire planet. After the characters identified what this admittedly 'neat' thing was (a threat) they then moved on to the rest of the story which was: figuring out how to stay alive and keep their fleets going instead of babbling on about what the neat cloud was. :eek:

Also, in Babylon 5 the Shadow monsters could have swept in at any time they wanted and killed everyone and the station in one fell swoop.

Hey, and guess what. Later on we find out that the shadows and the bad guys had a motive for disappearing for many episodes at a time and not apearing constantly and blowing up the station and all the characters when they had the power to. The explanation and motive made perfect sense too. Took awhile to find out why, but oh well. Maybe the motive for the shadows and the Others in Lost will make sense too, maybe not. Who knows.

In one of the later B5 seasons there was a similar threat which kept killing many, many people. It seemed like an obvious cause because the viewers and even the characters were "supposed to know" the answer as to who/what it was.

Yet, it took an entire season for the threat to be exposed, but when it was, there was an answer, it fit in with everything that happened before in previous seasons and turned out to be something very clever.

Anyways, just trying to state that yes, shows like Lost which have a partially prewritten "arc" can try your patience. I was annoyed and wanted to belt Ana when it took several episodes for her to simply confess that the Others assaulted them.

But I don't follow you on anything else. Your suggestions remind me of some funny "advice" CBS executives gave Rod Serling in the '60s about "more action, more talk about creatures/threats, less pointless plot" which eventually ended the Twilight Zone. Each episode was built around the character vs. threat premise, they wanted the show to focus less on character and more on "quicker payoff." You don't like my example because it is old? Tough, that is the history of sci fi. It is a very careful balance that the writers have to maintain between character, plot and action/villians.

Again, if you don't like Lost and feel that the characters don't talk enough about the minsters and the villians and that the plot doesn't "wrap up" enough at the end of each episode, then you are better off watching other shows like Trek, CSI or Law and Order. It is a sci fi mystery drama and the writers are taking their time revealing things. You are annoyed with the show's concept. It is as simple as that.

ha. Funny. I'm gonna make a "wild assumption" here that you don't like to read or reply when people call you out as I just did. And my Babylon 5 "shadow" example sums up and nullifies your PMS'ing about Lost perfectly. Seriously man, Spike is showing Trek and CSI. I'd look into it. Or you could watch Surface, they "talk about stuff" all the time on that show. And a few weeks ago they built a homemade submarine and went into a hole looking for the monsters! Sure has some piss poor characters though.

It's a damn TV show.

The heck with Kate and her angst. Check out the Canadian preview for this week which hints at a possible major screwup while inputting that rascally code into the computer. Preview shows Eko and Jack re-watching the Marvin Candle instructional video. Also has some dialogue with Michael speculating on the Hatch construction "...in case of an explosion from the ceiling," Jack kissing Kate, yay I guess and then closes with shots of the Hatch panel on the wall hitting zero as Locke furiously tries to put the code back in.

It's on www.lostlinks.net, just look for "Canadian Real media preview" right on the front page.

TV previews can be blatantly and purposefully deceptive in their editing though so we will have to see My guess is it's just counting down at the episode's beginning and they catch it just in time, then the rest of the episode is more 'Hatch specualtion'. But this sure has me anticipating it a lot more than the dumb romance/suspense themed U.S. preview.
