The news of Pedro (if this is to be believed, Steve Phillips and the Boston Dirt Dog are not exactly reliable news sources) signing with the Mets saddens me. Not so much to see one of my favorite Sox players leave town (it happens), but the fact that he is staring down the edge of the table and he is about to fall off it. Originally the Mets did not find him old and frail enough to warrent the money... now they do, for whatever reason. Oh well. :|
The Mets next year may shatter the single-season blown save record as we know it.

I really feel for the Mets fan, I know lots of Mets fans and they're really good baseball fans, not vindictive or mean/bitter, just optimistic and sad at the same time. They deserve a lot better than this Fred Coupon bullshit, as a Yankee fan I like watching the Mets (they're usually in town when the Yankees are on the road), I'm a big fan of Piazza, and the Subway Series was awesome. I think it's laughable that they didn't sign Vlad Guerrero entering his prime at a huge discount because of "health concerns" when their doctors never even looked at his file, yet they're willing to give MORE money to a pitcher on a 3 year decline with a 90 percent torn labrum the following year.

One can only hope that a thorough physical that shows the torn labrum will be enough to nix this ridiculous deal but I doubt this will happen.
Yes Spo...we Mets fans are pessimistic and optimistic with a layer of frustration on top but we all know where this is going. Mets fans such as myself are used to the Mets making unbelievably poor signings and Omar Minaya is looking to extend that tradition. This is an Omar move, but I agree that its probably the Wilpon's that extended the deal to make sure the signing occurs and give the Mets some good PR. The problem is history shows that good PR doesn't exist in the Mets universe.
Too bad..the offseason started off well enough with the departer or Al "I'm gonna run for mayor" Leiter, John "Mafia boy" Franco, Mike "stop overusing me art" Stanton and the signing of Kris "Overpay me and you'll also get my whore wife" Benson.
Why the hell couldn't the Mets show Richie Sexson the $$$ and offer him more than the sad Mariners. THE MARINERS!!! Last f'n place and they won't improve much with the Angels, A's and an improved Texas club right in front of them.
The offseason for the Mets will be just as frustrating as the regular season.

Pedro is very good, but I believe the word is, one of the Red Sox front office guys said, if they had the three-year $40.5 million contract with the 252 oerks, said to me "this contract is going to cause us more anxiety than anything, there's no way to get a penny of insurance... if you look at Pedro's baserunners per nine innings, hits per nine innings, strikeout to walk ratios, they've all gone south dramatically in the last five years, strikeouts per nine innings pitched too. Those are indicators that the stuff is not there. He had a 5.00 ERA when he pitched in a normal rotation on four days rest. Tom Verducci admired what Pedro did in the post-season, pointing out that his three good starts were on 7-8-and-7 days rest. And then when he pitched on four days rest, he didn't pitch well.
I really worry for Omar Minaya that this could be a terrible deal. And I'll tell you why I object to Fern Cuza. I think the right thing is to do the best thing for your client. And the best thing for your client whose already made $92 million and is guaranteed $133 million dollars. He's allowed to do basically what he wants to do. People leave him alone. Nobody made a big stink about his not oing to the sixth game of the Yankees series, which I still think is perposterous. But in New York, well over half the media view him as a complete and utter mercenary who grovels to get one extra dollar. Pedro does not take kindly to any criticism. He's going to get killed in New York. And with the franchise run by a PR guy from New York named Stu Sucherman, cause he has the final say on every decision made because he's Fred Wilpon's PR hack, I just think he's in for big trouble. Something odd is gonna go down over this I'm sure. Its the worst kept secret in baseball that that rotator cuff is like 90% torn. I honestly hope this doesn't become an issue for The Mets because honestly, they have enough fragile bodies as it is on that team.

Biggo goes back to second, which is awesome (that gap between Bags and whomever this years SS is got a lot smaller). No word on Beltran and Clemens hasn't made his mind yet. We need more in relief pitching for sure, though starter Wade Miller is looking like he'll be coming back, Backe, Oswalt, Pettite fill in the rest. Clemens would be gravy.
Honestly, the only question marks here are Left and Center Field (and again the relief pitching). Quals and Micelli are out. Yay! Gallow and Springer stay. Boo!

I had my second day of work at Bose yesterday and one of my bosses is a Red Sox fan, I wanted to broach the subject that I'm a huge baseball fan to help get to know my new co-workers. I decided to wait until she left though, with the Red Sox having just lost Pavano, Pedro and Schilling (For possibly the first month of 2005, the ankle isn't doing well). I had this feeling when they were pitching him with that injury that they were really going for broke in 2004 and didn't even care what happened in the years following.
Red Sox fans: in hindsight are you glad Schilling pitched with the ankle and did who knows how much damage to himself, or would you rather have risked pitching someone else in his 2 "ankle" starts to make sure he's still Curt Schilling the rest of the contract? If I were a Red Sox fan I'd probably just say "I don't want to fuck with anything that happened in 2004, I would never change anything if it meant maybe not winning that championship." That said, right now the Red Sox opening day pitching rotation is Wells-Arroyo-Wakefield-?-?. That's got to be scary, the Mets rotation currently blows the Sox rotation out of the water as of the end of the winter meetings.
Could this be "The Suture Curse", with the Red Sox selling Schilling's ankle to the devil for a championship?
