as long as he pitches 200 innings with an era around 4 or less i will be happy, and i think its entirely possible. He can't be a worse headcase than DLowe, and should easily get the wins that eluded him in chicago with the Red Sox lineup behind him(even DLowe got almost 20 a year).
I don't think Pedro will be awful right away, I think he'll post an ERA under 3.5 this year and next year. He just won't be the Pedro that won Cy Youngs, and then his arm will fall off in years 3 and 4. He'll also be a bitch in the clubhouse, but he'll sell tickets and bring some respectability back to the team. I still can't get over how Coupon could pass up Guerrero at only 12 million per year because he might be hurt, only to give Pedro 14 per year the following offseason after doing an MRI and seeing that he IS all fucked up. The Mets would have won a World Series in the last 4 years if they signed A-Rod after 2000, traded Payton for Sheffield when they had the chance, made all those no brainer moves that Coupon passed on. (A-Rod would have played for less money with the Mets, he grew up a Mets fan in Queens).
Stormy: He'll go 200 innings and have an ERA around 4, that won't be an issue, I just wouldn't give him the ball in a close postseason game
that's ok, Ben Sheets can take the ball then :pQuote:

"The Upside: The departure of Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe leaves Boston's rotation with a couple of big holes, and Clement has the raw stuff to fill one of those spots. Scouts have compared his arm and the movement on the fastball to a younger Kevin Brown, and if Clement can handle Boston and throw strikes more consistently, he could become a dominant force. But those are big ifs.
The Downside: Others familiar with Clement have doubts about whether he can handle the pressure of pitching in Boston, where new players are given a relatively short leash by the media and the fans. If Clement goes into a prolonged period when he struggles with his command and loses some games, he will get booed and will have to handle enormous duress. He is a player of many rituals, and his comfort zone could be invaded by the stress. Clement will get his chance on the big stage.
Big Picture: The Red Sox could have waited to address their lack of starting pitching, perhaps into spring training or the start of the season. They made their move now, and while it might feel more comfortable at this time, they have locked themselves into a significant commitment with a pitcher who may or may not thrive in Boston. Seems like a lot of cash -- they gave Clement as much as they initially offered Martinez -- for a less than certain investment."
Clement's career numbers are 69-75 with a 4.34 ERA, last year he was 9-13 with a 3.58 ERA and 190 strikeouts in 181 innings. He's frustrating, if he just put it all together he'd be filthy (the guy is at times a strikeout machine). I think David Well's antics will be a nice way of deflecting scrutiny from Clement, so that could be a positive.
The latest on the Randy Johnson trade is that the Yankees have to take back Ishii from the Dodgers and give up their first round draft pick from 2002 (a young pitcher). I'm really not familiar with Ishii at all, other than that for like 6 months last year everyone thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Do you think Ishii is a salary dump, or could the Yankees actually want him? He is left handed; I can't find any real info beyond that he's now a part of the deal. After Nomo and Irabu, I'm still waiting to see a Japan league pitcher come over here and have a long successful career.
Raystorm: I never thought about that Varitek on the Mets thing, but now that Pedro's proposed it I think he's actually right. Varitek would be an ideal catcher for a team that needs leadership as it's about to contend. Piazza's on the way out, he's one of my favorite players and it's annoying to see Pedro disrespecting him, but it is time to move on.
I really really like that move, I think it'd be a brilliant signing. I don't like bringing Delgado to New York, he's too sensitive and the whole "I won't stand up for God Bless America because I don't like the war in Iraq" thing won't play well in the city where 9-11 happened. Plus he sucks defensively and is past his prime. The Mets should also jump on Alfonso Soriano, trade Reyes for him. Reyes is just like Nick Johnson, always hurt, plus we now know that Reyes will not ever be as good as Soriano already is. I want Soriano back on the Yankees, if the Mets added Varitek and Soriano to that lineup they'd be all set. Later on they could pick up another bat, their pitching looks good, and David Wright I think will turn out to be the greatest position player the Mets have ever developed.
ishii is definaltly a salary dump. He's a walk machine, and his WHIP is so bad that it destroys any benefit his other stats may bring in fantasy baseball. He has a good stretch now and then, but he is not a good pitcher. Also, you have to be wary of any pitcher coming from Dodger Stadium to a new home. You never know how bad the adjustment is going to be, and in this case i'm better awful.
Orlando Cabrera signs a 4 year deal with the Angels. No financial details yet.
Orlando Cabrera to Anaheim
Dave Roberts goes to the Padres for Jay Payton, Ramon Vasquez, a minor leaguer and cash.
Roberts to Padres, Payton to BoSox
Jay Payton? Good pick. He's still got potential on a good team. :)
The Sox aren't done with their rotation by any stretch and rumor is they will wait till spring training to fix it. That is of course if they can't grab Wade Miller right now, cause a healthy him would balance this rotation out immensely.
Otherwise I'm much more upset about Varitek. Pedro was just leveraging the Sox for the best offer he could get, because we knew what the Mets now know, and that is he has a 90% tear of his rotator cuff. Varitek though, we need him, and I just wish he'd drop that no trade bullshit.
Anyway the April rotations are starting to look a little more balanced.
NYY April Rotation: Mussina, Johnson, Pavano, Wright, Brown
BOS April Rotation: Wells, Clement, Arroyo, Wakefield, Halama (perhaps Wade Miller)
Billy Beane really hates not having flexiblity huh?
I mean jesus he just has no problem with dismantling his core and taking his chances on unproven talent.
Good for him.
Dodgers just pulled out of the three way deal they had with the Dbacks and Yanks.
DePodesta says fack you to the Dbacks and Yanks
edit: Looks like Javy's refusal to go to LA for a physical may be a reason why LA backed off.
Javy wont go to LA
