I think Jaret Wright's ERA would be 5 even if he stayed with Atlanta this year, I think 2004 was a crazy fluke for him. I still can't believe the Yankees signed him.
I'm happy to see that the Yankees are taking a hard line with Beltran, either he wants to be a Yankee or not. I'm tired of guys that can't handle New York and don't want to be there.
Oh, it's looking like Beltran might be in NY after all.
I would love to see him in a Mets uniform, but I still think in the end he'll go back to Houston. I will throw up if he goes to the Yanks..ugh.. soon the Yanks will have a superstar in every position..even the backups will be superstars.Quote:

If he wore a Mets or Yankees uniform he will get a ridiculous amount of money on endorsements, merchandise, commercials (for both english and spanish networks in the tri-state area)..etc.
I do hope he signs with the Mets though.
So, the Yankees agree to a $32 million/2 year contract extension for Randy Johnson.
He will be 44 in the last year of the deal. $16 million is a lot to pay for a 44 year old, right? But, wait, they're paying $9 million/yr of Vasquez's salary that year, too, as part of this trade. $25 million, eh? Ah, yeah, and since they'll be way over the cap in 2007 also, that means that the $16 million they're paying RJ will cost them an additional 40% (or $6.4 mil) in luxury tax.
$16 million + $9 million + $6.4 million = the $31.4 million 44 year old. Steinbrenner is a crazy fucker.
If it was anyone other than Randy Johnson I'd agree, it's crazy. But the guy is a freak of nature, he's 6 foot 10 and statistically is still in the peak of his career at 41. He's a much safer signing than David Wells both on and off the field.
I agree the income tax issue is meaningless when compared to the endorsement deals Beltran would get in New York, on top of the fact that the New York teams will pay him a higher salary to begin with. If he really cares about winning, Houston also makes no sense. Houston's core players are all old men on the verge of retirement and they can't hold onto a pitcher.
Safer than David Wells? Sure, if RJ was signed for $3 million.Quote:

I didn't compare their salaries, I compared their chances of being productive. I'd say Randy Johnson is absolutely worth 10 David Wells' at this point, Wells can break down at any time (like in the second inning of a world series start) and at his best can't even touch Randy Johnson. He also had problems following the rules in Joe Torre's clubhouse, which means he could wind up doing kegstands with Manny in Terry Francona's clubhouse. They'll both be the opening day starter for their teams. Getting Randy Johnson is the best move the Yankees have made towards winning a championship since the dynasty years. I can't think of a pitcher in the history of baseball better suited to dominate Yankee stadium than a mutant like Randy Johnson throwing sidearm 100mph fastballs with his left hand.
Mets leading in Beltran derby. That would be such a shitty fate for him, to come to our team and then get cursed. :(
The Mets desperately need a young 5 tool superstar center fielder, it'd be interesting to see if there's anything to the idea of a Mets curse if they sign him. If Roberto Alomar had retired instead of going to the Mets he'd be a lock hall of famer, now I doubt he'll make it at all.
