Bush Could Appoint Himself!!!

This is an interesting situation:

Say something similar to what happened in 2000 happens again in 2004. We have a contested election, and there is a debate over whether or not to count some number of votes - a debate that could well decide who became president, like in 2000.

The debate goes to the Supreme Court.

Rehnquist has cancer, and it's currently unclear whether or not he is going to be able to serve his term. What happens if he is unable to serve and is effectively forced to leave before the end of the year?

Bush appoints a Supreme Court justice to serve in recess between now and when the Senate reconvenes in 2005 (I believe). The senate would not have to confirm that justice.

Given the way the court is divided, Bush's appointee would probably make the difference in any decision over a contested election.

But seriously, it does seem fishy that all of this hidden agenda shit is coming to light. I think it's safe to say Kerry doesn't have a prayer in the world, even if he "wins" the election he's not going to win.

Doesn't the Justice have to be approved by the Senate? There's no scenario where he/she couldn't be. If the Senate isn't in session, the appointment has to wait.

The President can make recess appointments to the Supreme Court. It's happened a number of times.

I looked around a bit, this has actually been mentioned on other websites this week already, so it's not that interesting.

I don't think Bush would have the stones to do something like this, were such a situation to come to pass.

He would likely convene an emergency Senate session to confirm such an appointment.

Recess appointments to the federal bench are bad enough.

If there is a problem with a tie (different then what you're talking about but similar in the aspect that if the election runs into problems) I think it pretty certain that Bush will be President with John Edwards as his Vice President.

Stone is not even extremist, he voted for Kerry, DiffX has strong beliefs and has the courage to say things that a lot of people on both sides would like to say about their beliefs, overall I'd say he and I are very close in our Conservative beliefs, Yoshi is a bit extremist and offensive to a lot of people but I think that's the goal he's trying to accomplish.

I suppose I'll take your word for it, as I'm not searching through hundreds of posts for mostly something unimportant but I think my point still stands, you seem to live in the past as well. People perceive him as strong on terrorism yet the extend of the damage he has done wont be fully known for another two decades and despite claims by conservatives that no terrorist acts have been committed on US soil since 9/11 reality shows us otherwise(Richard Reid, Anthrax scare(the Anthrax was actually traced back to an Iowa military laboratory), two sniper cases a teenager who crashed a small airplane in an apartment building and a few other incidents strangely all seem to have not existed when talking with most
conservatives)

I could go on about almost all of his platform points in which he and his cabinet donGÇÖt let reality get in their way.

I wont.
