If you've been around games, and the industry, for any length of time then it's blatantly obvious how innovative and ambitious Shenmue was. The world, by 1999 standards, was huge. Neary everything in your environment was interactive and the title combined elements across genres for the first time. You had to train, extensively, to get "moves" that you had to use in a fighting system (QTE) that hadn't been seen before. The art, music, and sheer production values of the game transcended anything before it. I'm not saying that Shenmue was the masterpiece that some people think it was, but it simply cannot be denied that the game brought a whole hell of a lot to the table and set a new standard for the future. If you're any kind of student of video games, in general, it's clear how imporant it was despite its commercial failure.Quote:
