Animation schools?

Hi, i'm new here by the way. :)

Anyway, i was wondering... Are there any animation schools out there in England? Preferbly in the Manchester / Greater Manchester region? Because i'm 15, and i know animating is what i want to do for my job. The only problem is in collage they don't do animation. So i'm going to have to take art and design or something. But when i leave, i would really like to study animation, but i haven't the slighest clue if that's even possible.

Are there any universities out there that let you major in it? If not, are there any special animation schools that i could possibly attend? Right now i'm self taught, i mainly refere to The Animator's Survival Kit and websites, that's about it. I feel i need to actually get taught in it, do projects etc. Get my animating juices flowing.

Please don't tell me that i'm only 15 so why am i asking now. I'm asking now because i just feel i need to know.

Any help would be great.

I really couldnt tell you anything about what places are in england

if you decide to come across the pond for school then go to Cal Arts

I can't reccomend anything in England. The only places I know are relatively close (in California and such). hmmm...I don't know how animation works, but the magazine CMYK shows works from students in illustration and design, as well as the schools they come from. It might be a good place to check and if anything, a good way to see what other students from other schools are doing.

University of the Arts, here in Philly, which I go to. Also, a lot closer to England than the schools out in Cali, though Cal Arts probably kicks UArts ass.

anyway the reason I suggest Cal Arts isnt because its any better than most the other schools out there in what itll teach you, (in fact I'm dissapointed by alot of Cal Arts thesis projects but anyway thats neither here nor there)

its the simple fact that no other school has more contacts in the industry than Cal Arts and I can tell you right now that's more important than how good of an animator you are

This is true for every industry. It's easier to know someone as your in than having talent.

Cal Arts has connections at Disney, Pixar, ILM, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, and the list goes on and on

seriously Cal Arts has the largest connectiosn in the industry, right now I really wish I had gone there and I'm really contemplating getting my masters from there now

In my city there is the PCAD-Plymouth Collage Of Art And Design.
I really couldnt tell you if they do Animation as a corse but i would think so being an art collage and all.
If not that theres also Cornwall collage (in Cornwall funnilly enough...)
Again im not sure but my mate just went there to do art.
I dont know about up manchester way though sorry.

There's a college near my house that Pixar hires from. I forget the name, but they said that the students they hire typically have the most robust and best demo reels.

MICA's another pretty good school where PIXAR does recruiting.

Also it should be noted that you will almost surely have to spend a great deal of your own time learning things. Nobody ever comes out with a demo reel or portfolio from just doing the bare minimum work the school requires. If you want to be better you'll have to apply yourself to it fully.

you would think this would be common sense but if you saw some of the demo reels and thesis animations ive seen even from big name schools >_<

My brother went there! For all of two days...they told him how much it would be total, including dorming and such, but when he got there, tagged on an $4k in fees. Like "whoops, we kinda forgot to mention this before you flew over the country. Silly us."

Needless to say he came back and I don't have love for SCAD.

Cal Arts is cool. Art Center is also one of those 'in the know' places - you pay bank, and the same things are taught elsewhere, but it's all about prestige. In fact, a former Art Center instructor I know of says that you can go to CSULB and get same level of education in our art program as Art Center. And cheaper. MUCH cheaper.

Oh, and if you want hardcore animation on a budget, it gets no better than CSU Fullerton. They have an entire specialization in animation (both 3D and 2D), whereas Long Beach has traditional arts (fine art, illustration, design) with lackluster animation classes.

The school's job is to give you a foundation and fundamental or advanced knowledge of a subject. If you want to excel it'll take more than that. I'm sure there are sites on the internet which can help you out even more. Where do you work?

my reel is kinda diversed I may cut it down though we'll see when I finally edit the stuff from this movie into it

right now I have shit from the tv show I worked on, some stuff of my own some modeling and alot of traditional art work all on it

always wanted to be an artist it's all i did growing up was draw and stuff so I went to school for art, and the school i went to WAS in the top 3 in the country for 3d Animation when i applied and started there, and people were getting jobs all over the industry unfortanetly the second semester of my freshman year the entire 3D Department quite and we were left with 1 psycho and I had to teach my self Maya and animation and left with no fucking contacts in the industry

which is why i wish I made the descion to go to cal arts instead

it's an uphill battle, specially with alot of the entry level work in broadcast being done over seas, I can't tell you how many jobs have come down to me and 1 other person and I'll hear time and time again "We'll we like do your stuff more but we're going with the other guy cause he knows some one who knows the art director"

which is why any one i see who wants to go into animation I tell them, go some place like cal arts and just become best friends with everyone of your teachers

My animation teacher is head of the Philly Film Festival.
