Hands on the DS

I love Game Crazy!! They get their shit quick. First day at Game Crazy and luckily I was able to play it. They only allowed Super Mario DS,Metriod Hunters and Madden tobe played. I got to Metroid and Madden but missed Mario( Had to get home) so I will write my reveiw.

First Madden which is clearly weaker than Metroid. The graphics are 64 poor. They don't have muh detail and are pretty ugly. however the framerates are great. I played for 10 mins with Raiders vs Eagles and it never slowed down. It plays in-game without the stylus but you can call plays with. I might pick up but not after metroid. The commentary and audio is lightyears ahead of the GBAs but it does get repeitive and I only played for 10 minutes.

Metriod is awesome. The stylus control takes a while to get used to but it feels a lot like playing Quake or Counter-Strike so it not that hard.Its not lock on like prime so peole who bitched about primes control won't say much here. The multi-player is awesome and the framerates are awesome. Like madden I played for a while and it never slowed it down. ( The thumbpad thing makes the game easier but I noticed that if you rest your thumb it can screw up the control of the game. My advice is begin with the thumb on multi-player, use stylus on single and when you are good enough try the stylus on multi-player) The sound is awesome but the single player in the demo is weak. It is just walk, walk and shoot. However there is alot of shooting. If you are getting a DS then you better pick up a game becuase it won't last long with the fun factor. The sound like Madden is very good though.

Am sorry it is such a weak reveiw but I didn't have much time to play it.

But really Kano, what did I do wrong. I had came back from a game store after playing the DS. I was excited. I quickly posted on the forums after reading a few threads. I gave my opinon on 2 games. I know they are weak but I only played for a few minutes. I didn't attack anyone or force anyone to buy a DS. I just wanted to post something. What happens? Am attacked for having an opnion about something. Am attacked for not hating something becuase they do. I am not a professional game reveiwer. Hell am in a typing class for gods sake! I just watched the videos of Metroid Prime Hunters on IGN. I wasn't interested in it at all before. Now I think it looks pretty sweet. I was turned off by the low-res textures but it looks so smooth that it doesn't look like the textures are even a problem. The person playing it seemed to be able to control it well so that's a plus. Spiderman 2 looks awesome as well. I'm seriously thinking about impulse buying a DS even though I had sorta just made up my mind on waiting till PSP. Waiting can be sooo hard. :D

I want to get hands on with Mario 64 DS before purchasing one. PlanetGamecube's impressions made me think that the gameplay might be a bit awkward even with the thumbstrap. I don't think the demo units come with the strap so I'll just have to listen to popular opinion on that issue.

I think that you guys should lighten up on renmant a wee bit. Everything he says gets picked apart. I personally don't care how many exclaimation points a person uses. Its not as if the entire post was full of them or anything. He wanted to bring something that excited him and possibly other people whom are excited for the DS to the board to give some impressions Everyone jumps on him. My store got the DS display units today.
Pictochat is neat and Metroid Prime Hunters was very impressive. I look forward to getting the unit myself and spending more time with it.

Geen, IGN says that the DS is backlit(Gamegear, Turboexpress...). Dunno why i find that hard to believe. so i'm asking you, is it truely backlit?


also(to everyone else), when they say that the DS(and PSP) supports WiFi multiplayer, does this mean i can play against other online users using a wireless access point? or are they just refering that DSs in the same room can connect together wirelessly?

also, if it is playing other using an access point, how would we be able to connect? through IP addresses?

The DS screen was beautifully lit when I was using it yesterday. All three things I fiddled with (Menu stuff, Pictochat, and Metroid Prime Hunters) all looked brighter and clearer than the SP in a fully lit room.

It's not that I didn't understand it and it's not that it was hard to follow, it's that it was an EBGames reader review. Seriously. Go read a bunch of EB Games reader reviews, notice how they write, how it's presented, the pure flow of ADD conciousness, and the typing skill. Much like how remarking a review that goes on for seven pages is an IGN review, that was an EB Games reader review.

Uhh... I played a DS today. Crazy as it may sound, after playing Metroid Whateveritiscalled on it, I actually think the DS does the FPS genre far better - control wise - than any controller-based console FPS ever has. That thing controls like butter.

They should turn the DS into a console FPS controller.

Yeah, the stylus/d-pad + L button thing looks to be really sick. I hope they find great ways to utilize the touch screen as it goes.

shidoshi, that ringing endorsement puts my mind at ease, as I didn't think it could work all that well. I can't wait to play backlit GBA stuff, Advance Guardian Heroes should look swank on it.

The way I understand it thus far, is that there's going to be out-of-the-box WAN support in it for playing local area multiplayer games when consoles are within 30-100 feet of eachother, and other games may utilize wifi hotspots for online content/multiplayer.

Summary: It probably depends on the game.

I am reading that as local multiplayer will be handled the same was as the wireless multiplay adaptors for the GBA work (cool), and that wide-area network play will not be offically supported by Nintendo (weak), and as such no developer will ever bother.

Let's see...this would be a coherent way of describing Hunters:

When I played Metroid Prime: Hunters at e3, it was for two reasons. One, I waited in that damn line 2 hours to try the DS out, and be damned if I copped out now. Two, everything else was being played at the moment. Trust me, I wasn't looking forward to an FPS on a hanheld, in 3D, with stylus controls.

Good thing all the other games were taken though.

Hunters was a unique experience. Stylus looking and d-pad strafing felt so...natural that it was hard to think of any other way to do a FPS in such a seamless fashion on such a tiny system. The gameplay was fast, furious, fun, and easy to get adjusted to. For the southpaws out there like me, you can even use the face buttons over the d-pad. Nice.

Even the graphics weren't that bad. Mind you, I'm not saying the DS (or the PSP for that matter) can handle 3D like its big brother, but Hunters is a long jump in graphical prowess over the only other 3D portable we've known til this point. Yeah, the Nokia N-Gage. Bleh.

3 minutes with Hunters is hardly enough time to figure out its worth, or the true potential of the DS, but it shows promise. Between May and today, some things have changed. Hunters will have multiple control schemes (YES!), wireless and linked play (to my knowledge), and a 'LITE' version will come packed in with the DS. Think of it as more than a demo but less than the actual game. With Hunters coming bundled alongside Picto Chat, the Nintendo DS already promises two games (applications?) that will be universal to all who own the portable. A good idea for a system who's main thrust is interactivity between players and wireless competition on the go.

So see, even if you don't agree with me, at least I clearly pointed out what I liked and why. If I spent more time playing Hunters (or had a Game Crazy near me), I could back up my opinions even more with specific game mechanics. But when you post one long tirade that lacks any sense of structure, you come off as ranting. It's not that your opinion doesn't matter - you just fail to bring it in a way that's easy to read.

Let me say one thing, though - the set-up I played on basically had the DS "floating" in the air, attached to an arm. Because of this, I didn't have to hold it in my hands and try to use the stylus, or I didn't have to set it on a counter/whatnot and try to use the d-pad. So we'll see how actual, real-world use works out.

There were five control schemes on the demo I tried, and all but the main one were pretty crap. There are really only two control schemes, it is just that two of them are mirrored for the lefties. One of the control schemes uses the buttons to move and the d-pad to look, or vise versa, which I can't imagine working too well. (Didn't try it, though.) The other puts the main action screen on the bottom screen, and you are then dragging the stylus across the screen where you need the most to see what is going on. Didn't like that one bit.

No, we can't. I'm pretty sure the DS works on an area limited network, meaning you can only play with people within a certain range and not somebody in LA when your in NYC. That means that it wouldn't be an MMORPG at all.

If this is true, it will be yet another example of Nintendo not having a clue. If you're going to put that option in there, use it! One of the reasons I was looking forward to the DS was that I could use my wireless router and play against people anywhere else via the internet. If PSP does that, and it actually gets used, that'll be a point in Sony's favor for me.

I realize it may not be a huge deal to a huge amount of people, but I was under the impression that Nintendo was trying to make the DS a killer system. Not a system with a killer set of features that then go unused.

I have to believe that if they built IP software into a game that it could potentially use the WiFi to go on the net though. It's just not a hardware default.

My understanding is that neither of them plan to do this at this point. I'll go farther than giving points for it, though. That's the difference between a sale and not for me. If one has internet multiplayer, and the other doesn't, that's a slam dunk.

Yeah um... Fable HAS sold more than Wind Waker, and Wind Waker has been out for almost a year now... Fable in its first-week alone WORLDWIDE sold more then a million copies. It took Wind Waker at least a month to reach that, and it still hasn't broken 2 million copies which Fable is on course to do within the next few months.

Just read through this thread. Nope, apathy towards the DS still there. I honestly can't see buying this thing at launch. None of the games have that AWESOME! NEED IT! feel.

just like the XBL thread. Enough is enough. I don't care about opinions on the DS or WW or Fable or any of that stuff anymore( I never did) We wasted an half page talking about complete shit. I don't know why but I get really angry whenever someone questions my opinion on something I am going to buy. That happened for the gamecube and Xbox. It looks like the same is going to happen for the DS

Er, the Wind Waker is well past 3 million sold worldwide (1.6M America, 800k Japan, 600k+ Europe). Are you comparing Fable worldwide to Wind Waker in the US alone? Even then Zelda comes out on top (it has had a year and a half on the chart after all).

Also Fable broke a million it's first full month worlwide, not week. It also has yet to break a million in any singular region.

So, I feel bad to resurrect this thread, but I had the brilliant idea of heading over to EB to check out the kiosk. They had it stashed in some corner near the front of the store surrounded by display boxes, so we didn't see it originally, only after walking around for half an hour. We then proceeded to play it for at least an hour, the demo and the pictochat, and I must admit it's pretty hot. Yeah the graphics aren't going to stand up to the PSP, but it's fucking brilliant, and smaller than I thought.

I asked the store guys "How come you have the DS display stuck in that corner? We almost didn't see it!"
"So people wouldn't hang around and play it all day."

Oops. Then we noticed the gate was half closed and they were waiting for us to get the hell out. They coulda said something.
Still, it's sweeter than I thought. No purchase until next year though, easy, unless a great GBA trade-in deal occurs. Even then I'm not sure, as I have some old GBA games I still play, like pokemon puzzle league and RC Pro Am and the original Mario for Game Boy.
