DVR

I just got a DVR from my work (I am in a test market) and I am absoluetly loving it. Here is the issue, I need suggestions on what shows to record the new eps of. It is an HDTV recorder so HD broadcasts are no problem. The hard drive is substantial (120 gigs), so I need ideas. What do you guys record the episodes of? Do you guys like your DVRs? TiVo vs. other brands? Homemade DVRS?

I haven't watched TV the same since I got my DVR. It's a TiVo from Direct TV so I'm not sure what's diffrent about other brands. I haven't seen a comercial in a long time now (other than during live sporting events) which is the biggest bennifit with the fact that I can watch whatever I want whenever I want right behind it.

As for shows you should record (to name just a few)...

Arrested Development
Malcom in the Middle
The Screen Savers (it's nice to fast forward through the junk)
Any new episode of Icons
and I duno man, whatever you feel like watching.

I love my DVR from Time Warner Cable. I only pay $7 in addition to my monthly cable bill and I get to record up to 2 shows at the same time. The space is kinda limited though (but that was when I was backlogged with Futurama and Family Guy eps).

I watched basically all the Futurama, Family Guy, and Kim Possible eps.

Now I'm recording the new TMNT series (pretty good), Justice League Unlimited (reruns right now), The Batman (meh), Sealab 2021 (just started watching it), and The Simpsons.

Tape Venture Brothers. Mon-Friday at Midnight on Cartoon Network. And Arrested Development. And Nip/Tuck. And send me N/T if you could.

I'd love to have some money so I could throw together a $400 DVR. There's software like MythTV for listings/recording scheduling/etc. And the best part is, is that it's made from normal PC parts so you could network it with your computers and watch videos you download on your television. It would be a pretty damn cool project to do.

And assuming that the DVR you have only does a straight TS rip for HD programming, Master, you're going to need every megabyte in that drive to record only a handful of shows...

The older season 1 sealab eps completely own the new ones. Mostly because the actor who played captain murphy died, and they replaced him with his son.

If you want to view the oldies, hit up my AIM name or e-mail and I'll send you avi's of them.

I use a pair of dishnetwork Dishplayers. for one simple reason, I can take the direct stream Mpeg2 right of the hard drive using open source tools.

That means pristine brodcast quality, not decoded then re-encoded video.

PC Mag had an article about a DIY DVR project. They recommended some Hauppage Theater tuner for about $120-150, the BeyondTV remote for about $40, and the rest is just stuff you have already like a hard drive, video card, 5.1 sound card. I'm gonna start this project soon, as soon as I get an ISO of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and my cheap tv tuner card I'll try it out.

The bad thing is that you need a TV tuner card for every show you want recorded at the same time. If you want 3 shows that are on at 8pm, you need three different TV tuners. I'm interested in checking out Nvidia's upcoming dual TV tuner that takes up only 1 PCI slot.

Saw your rant in the TMNT Totally Obsessed thread. I think I'm currently watching the third season, which hasn't yet done anything that stupid. The Battle Nexus tournament was pretty cool, but I bet that Shredder plotline left a sour taste in your mouth...

I'm just bitter because I had very very high hopes. It wanted to be like the old school comic book, but it's just way too dumbed down for kids.

If they had gone for the more mature angle, I could see it being ALOT better.
