Is the ending for Halo 2 really as bad as the MGS 2 ending?

I keep on hearing comparisons between both endings. I dont mind a cliffhanger ending, but the ending in MGS 2 was much worse than that. The MGS 2 ending was the worst ending ever because it made you question the entire MGS world. Konami spent all those games creating this bad ass military super dude and his fight against high powered villains, just to ruin it all with this patriots control everyone crap. If Raiden and Fortune were really pansies what does that open up? Solid Snake and Ocelot could be pansies as well if the Patriots didnt want them to be hardcore. The entire MGS 1 could have been staged by them as well. The MGS 2 ending/story was garbage through and through. it really detracted from the whole experience.


I'm playing Halo 2 right now and I love it. If the ending is that garbage though, I'd really rather not watch it. So is it really as bad as the MGS 2 ending?

mgs2 has a shitty ending, but at least it has a sense of finality. halo 2 just stops, as though someone cut a larger game in half.

Halo 2 doesn't have an ending. It's as simple as that. Does it detract from the overall experience? Eh, a little, but even I, the biggest Halo story whore on this forum didn't even freak out. It just didn't hit me until a few minutes later that yeah, that was the end.

I've heard Soul Reaver is a much more appropriate comparison. Just stops as if the game is unfinished.

I want to know what happened to the level from last years E3. Maybe thats going to be part of the real last level which we'll download from Live in a few months. That would be the greatest thing ever, even though it will never happen because that would just be plain damn dumb of any company to do that.


Speaking of bullshit MGS2 ending, I'm even more pissed that MGS3 doesnt start where 2 left off! MGS3 should'nt even be called 3 since your not even playing as Solid Snake. Its a fucking prequel.

The Halo 2 ending wasn't even an ending, as Sl1p mentionned. People shouldn't be so anal to how it ends, I'm pretty glad it ended the way it did, since it shows a continuance to the series. I think people would be pretty pissed off in the long run if it ended with Master Chief saving the day and destroying the opposition never to hear from them again. Meaning no more Halo games. This ended well, because now, I await the next one. So no, the ending wasn't bad in the slightest bit.

Out of curiosity for those of us who have no interest in playing the game, would anyone care to post a spoileriffic plot synopsis? I hear the stopping point of Halo 2 is bad but I'll never see it for myself, and I'm at least mildly curious how horribly they blew their narrative.

And there's the bit that can be construed as criticism, albeit the exact same criticism leveled at it by everyone else on the thread. So to clarify- curious about the story, not interested in game.

Master Chief is orbiting Earth in the ship Cairo, fighting off Covenant boarders. He carries a Covenant bomb off the Cairo and deposits it on a Covenant ship, scuttling it. After a lot of fighting in the African city of New Mombassa, MC and his allies are forced to fly into the warp zone of a Covenant ship making a slipstream jump. The city is wiped out by the jump, but the heroes are warped across the galaxy, to Halo.

The perspective then shifts to a Covenant Elite named the Arbiter. He is charged with killing a rebel group of Covenant who reject the Prophets. Destination, Halo. You get to play as the Chief and then, finally, back to the Arbiter. The Arbiter meets Sarge, and agree to an alliance against the rebel Covenant.

Halo is activated, but turns out to be a dud. Concerned about the other Halos in existence, it is revealed that they can all be activated at a single location, the Ark. The Ark is hinted to be on Earth. Master Chief is shown aboard a Forerunner ship headed for Earth. Sarge asks him what he's doing. "Finishing this fight" is the reply.

After the credits, Cortana is shown with the Flood Gravemind. It wants to question her, and she says, "Okay, shoot."

Eh, staying the hell away from the end of MGS2 is just fine by me. I'd rather they try to make a fresh start 40 years in the past, than spend time attempting to find logic in that mess. Let Metal Gear Acid handle the mystery of the 12 dead guys who rule the world. I just wanna slash some Russian guys' throats.

And looks sexy while doing it. Seriously! For an AI, Cortana is pretty hot! I smell tentacle rape in Halo 3!

And you know, that was a pretty good summary Salmonax and when you summarize it like that, it makes the ending look, well, a lot better than at first glance. When you really put it all together, the ending is very apropriate..it's just that is really is very, very sudden.

That's right. When Chief said his last line I was expecting another scene to start, I'm sure whoever ran the cinematics made it seem that way to hook us until the screen went black.

I think the title of this thread needs a spoiler tag.

Thanks salmonax, that's exactly what I was looking for. For the sake of the fans I hope Bungie lied when they said their next game wasn't Halo 3. :)

It isn't. They've been working on another game alongside Halo 2. Two other games actually, but the first got canned and replaced with the second. Uses the Halo 2 engine, but I don't think anything else is known about it. Probably will get canned as well to make room for Halo 3 though. I'm sure MS will push for that.

Nope, the Forerunner ship was what the prophet used to travel to the Ark, which is the Earth. Humans = Forerunners.

Anyone know if there is an additional scene for beating it on Legendary? I still have to finish two more levels in heroic...

The ending for Halo 1 had some nice closure and gave way to Halo 2 pretty easily. Though I can't say anything about Halo 2 since I haven't played it yet, maybe I should just wait until Halo 3 is just around the corner, I hate cliffhangers.

The fact that Konami basically lied about playing as Snake for the whole game is what detracted from the whole experience for me, never mind the horribly retarded storyline.

Can anyone actually sum up the story for MGS2? I've heard how awful it is many times, but I don't exactly feel like playing through the game to see what happens.

MGS2- it was all a horrible VR training mission fever dream, or maybe it wasn't. The End.

That's pretty much what everyone tells me.

I've yet to actually find a decent summary of the plot, and I'm pretty interested in it, but I hate stealth games so I'm not about to play through it.

No, the Halo 2 ending isn't as bad as MGS2's. I'd rather take a cliffhanger ending than a shitty ending I didn't even understand the first time with a hint of shitty closure. I won't knock MGS2's great gameplay though I'll give it that.

I guess if flew over my head but I thought that Tartarus activated it but after beating him they take out the key and is deactivated. In the first it couldn't be deactivated that way but is that what happened here?

I think this Halo was a dud. Either that or they just got to it in time, even though you see a beacon shoot the center.

Hmm...weird.

There was also a map of other Halo rings, looked like 5 or 6 of them. I guess one of them was either poorly built or aged too long to work. They'll probably be either be destroyed by remote on earth or just hang around inactive. Hopefully they resolve the Flood as well since they merely existed in the 2nd and weren't the primary danger. BTW is that talking plant dude a sentient Flood?

Did you guys not hear Cortana and Guilty Spark talking while you fought Tartarus? He said you just need a reclaimer to remove the index. Keyes' daughter does so, and a cancellation beacon turns off the Halo. As a failsafe, all the other Halos go into standby, which can be activated on the "ark" which is most likely Earth.

And yes, that's the Flood Gravemind. He sucks.

I have the LE edition and watched the stinking thing. They said the E3 city level was changed due to the timing constraints foir Halo 2. They had a lot DEEPER story, but they had to ... "Rush" the game out. They did not say who forced them to "Rush" the game, but I think Halo 3 will be on XBox 2. I mean they had 3 years, but somewone "rushed" them to finish it.

If anyone has the LE edition watch it. Its quite shocking, they say through out that they were "Rushed". And they ADAIN had the flamethrower all finished, but they didn't have the time to add it.

I also am a little peeved about the ending. But I am content with it ... for now. I am happy that I got another map for multi thats all I care about now. Heroic and Legendary ... I'm coming for ya; 2 more maps await me.

Heh I wasn't exactly writing down the dialogue. It didn't sink in totally in the midst of all the action. I generally thought thatit was shut down again but nobody went into any specifics which is why I questioned the "dud" thing.

Yeah the Flood Gravemind sucks but I suppose all sentient parasites have to report to a biig kahuna :P

Despite giving me Little Shop of Horrors flashbacks, the Flood Gravemind serves one purpose and a pretty good one at that. The Flood aren't the mindless, life killing beasts that we, and the rest of the characters thought they were. The Flood serve a purpose and have members which can actually think.

And apparantly can teleport. I don't know whats up with that, but hey, I liked it.
