style of music, also a fashion movement of sorts. See "dashboard confessional" and their ilk, basically its about whiney pussified guys singing songs about heartbreak and crying. Who knows maybe there are some decent underground emo bands but honestly to me decent and emo seem like contradictory terms. Fashion style involves thick rimmed glasses, thrift-store wear and really tight t-shirts for teh skinny boys. Its a fairly disturbing and annoying scene in my book.

links provided just so someone doesn't accuse me of making crap up, although i was generalizing a bit perhaps, I'm sure not every emo person listens to dashboard confessional. Something I found on that site that illuminates why I hate emo is this:
Keith wrote: "fashion: you forgot one thing about a lot of emo kids:)...there's also a high amount of metal-related t-shirts (iron-on metallica and iron maiden designs), sheerly for the kitsch in it..."
I see this around alot, my iron maiden shirts are frayed and falling apart due to extreme use. I bought mine at the show, they're the tour shirts and have the dates on the back, these emo ppl just wear them to be kitsch? Emo is just a fashion movement pretty much.
hardy har har.
lollerskates
Ha!
Now I understand.
Thanks, guys.
Hell I'm not even sure what emo is, but typically if someone asks if I like emo I will say no.
This is coming from the guy who wore a Bright Eyes shirt yesterday.
A good example of an emo band is Saves the Day.
Hear them attempting to be a punk band? Hear them just whining instead?
It's like Goth kids without the obsession with darkness and the occult trying to play punk music and just whining a lot. It ends up not being punk music at all, which is why it needed its own genre.
That's almost every indie band since 1992.Quote:

Also, while punk is about rebelling against the system and shit, emo's lyrics are often rebelling against torn sweaters and unanswered phone calls from the crush.Quote:

While I do listen to some music that fits into the modern "emo" definition (postal service, bright eyes, etc.) I feel that I must defend the term somewhat.
Not all the music is guys whining about stupid shit. Originally emo was another form of hardcore that instead of getting faster slowed down while keeping all the intensity. For examples check out bands like Rites of Spring, Braid, Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The Promise Ring, Drive Like Jehu, etc.
How to be: Emo

I hate when people judge emo based on crap like Dashboard Confessional, and think that's all emo is. Dashboard Confessional is to emo what Blink 182 is to punk. Just because they suck doesn't mean it all sucks, it's not a true representation of what makes the genre great. If anyone really wants to judge it they should go listen to the classic emo bands first, Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring, Texas is the Reason, Mineral. There aren't even that many real emo bands left, The Appleseed Cast is one of the only ones i can think of that's worth listening to.
I'll admit the fashion gets taken a little far by some :chunobi:
Fugazi is Emo? Whoa.
And I do like some emo. Even the bad emo. The Promise Ring is good. Hot Water Music is good.
People who *are* emo though, like people who are goth, piss me off 90% of the time.
I think I will just judge it by the fags who listen to it, thank you.
When it comes to emo, I don't feel like being fair and doing research.
emo kids = emo = gay
the end
Shit, Weezer is emo and everyone loves them.Quote:

I blame you Diff. Before then I was happy with getting excited about the spaceshuttle and jet fighters. T_T I’m....I’m a.....Techophile ;_;
I would still say that, relative to just the chicks you see walking on the street, Atlas has pretty huge titties. And I go to a college with like 25 sororities.
Meh you so need to move to mississippi then. Don't forget to bring your car, shitty ball cap, orange polo shirt, and some tan dress pants. You won't be able to get them otherwise.
Dude I go to school in Los Angeles. Plastic tits are everywhere.
but yea I need to swing by Ole Miss at some point. ^_^
Daddy buys all the little girls plastic titties at 18 here. It's probably not as abundant as where diff's hangin, but man is it present. I see a thread change coming up.Quote:

Why is it that Muse haven't released (as far as I have seen) Origin of Symmetry over in the US? I picked it up in the UK about 3 or 4 years ago... It is in my opinion, their best work.
Most of that stuff isn't anywhere near emo. That's the point.Quote:

Seriously, how can any project involving Connor Oberst or Ben Gibbard not be considered emo? They're the current poster children of the genre (just under Chris Carraba).
See below. Np.Quote:

But we shall see...
it's not the same guy, The dude singing for Postal Service is Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. Dashboard Confessional is Chris Carrabba, and he sings like a songbird *swoon*.Quote:

I've listened to another Muse song and it's actually kind of reminiscent of Radiohead. Suffice to say, Mman is insane.
Muse sounds like Radiohead if Radiohead was annoying, overbearing, and pretentious.Quote:

I like that Muse single too. The rest of the album is entirely borring. And they really only sound like Radiohead because the singer trys to emulate him to the T. The music does not resemble Radiohead in the slightest.
But you continue to dislike Postal Service if you want. Fear the fagginess.
LOL. You defended Radiohead in some thread I made awhile back. Stick to one opinion.Quote:

Im listening to A Rush of Blood... and thats wayyyyyyyyyy better than Hail to the Thief or fucking Absolution.Quote:

As far as I'm concerned, though (and really I don't see how you can argue with this), dude trying to sound like Thom Yorke > dude who sounds like a complete whiney fag.
Didn't they teach you that in math, diff?
Actually, it was purely coincidental I was listening to that album at that time, but whatever. A Rush of Blood... has actually gotten a lot stronger as time has passed, its just a really awesome record.
And in any case, District Sleeps Alone and Such Great Heights are the best songs on the album, so if you dont like those, dont bother with Give Up.
And actually, Yorke does sound like a whiny fag in a lot of Hail to the Thief/Kid A/Amnesiac songs.
Personally I'd say the best is Brand New Colony, it's the only one not ruined by the patented Gibbard one-two punch of shitty vocals and even shittier lyrics, which is a shame, because the music itself is quite enjoyable.Quote:

Whatever. I dont care. I just want some more songs like Optimistic.
And I know Im not gonna get them.
Hehe, my thoughts exactly.
I don't like Gibbard very much but I don't really think of him as whiney. Maybe it's because I lived across the hall from a guy who had the whineiest emo voice I've ever heard in my entire goddamn life. Christ alive, it was like listening to someone kill their grandmother.Quote:

Now that his roomates are gone (one married, the other in the army) the whole place is pretty much emo. Usually, the style is trucker hats, various band shirts (an awesome one I saw yesterday was one for The Advantage, a Minibosses-esqe group), sweaters yanked from their grandfathers closet and jeans folded up outwardly at the bottom.
I'd agree with this, the singles are pretty similar, but there are fantastic songs that are nothing like the singles, like "Ruled By Secrecy"Quote:

All I'm saying is that people seem to call things "emo" because of it's "emotional" lyrics. Lyrics alone should not define a genre.
Damn, I thought that's what it was. Well, that and other things.Quote:

I give it 1 or 2 more years. Its really peaking right now as far as pop culture goes.
This fucking shit is even here now. Every band in my area plays stuff like this shit and dresses like a bunch of faggy scensters. They all have a myspace which they have to check regurally.
