The nearing end of the fall semester

The end of the semester is coming up at a furious pace, it ends for me in approxiamately 3-4 weeks, one of those weeks being stunted due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. I have a fuckload of work and things to take care of and time has completley pulled the rug out under me.

November started and I thought I'd have at least a bit of room to breathe but now its already the middle of the month and that impending feeling of doom is coming. Whats worse, I've got all these great games I'd like to play and new books to read, but I can't b/c I'm busy reading shit for school, thinking about abstract ideas for essays I have to write and having to do all sorts of tedious homework and start studying for finals.

Today I've finally found teh light at the end of the tunnel because I think I've got a clear essay topic down and I've finished up some stuff that needed taking care of - but it still feels like I'm just about to endure the ass-pillaging of the worst college can throw at you.

Whats everyone near-end of semester status, anyone flailing about franctically or is everyone else gliding through?

I'm so happy I don't have to go through that anymore.

I'm so happy I made the desicion to not go to college and have to put up with this ridiculous shit.

Im flailing around frantically, because Im a slacker and care more about getting sex, listening to music, and playing guitar, than my senior-level schoolwork.

As for right now though... all I have to say is fuck thanksgiving break and every goddamn professor who thinks the week before the break is the best time to have a huge paper due.

Youre gonna burn out really hard once the 5th year starts, thats what happened to me and all the people I know who's done it. Unless you do something vastly different from usual (which I benefitted from, like halfway through this quarter), your 5th year is gonna be a grind. If you could wrap it up after 4 thats what I would recommend doing.

I'm in the calm before the storm right now, just a lot of things I really need to start working on like my final English paper. Mostly this week is aggrivating because I have to catch up on a bunch of crap for this Personal Wellness class I was forced into taking to fufill a Gen Ed credit.

College level 9th grade health class. What the fuck.

Unfortunately there's no way for me to finish it off in 4, as I fucked off like no other to start off. I'm not too worried about burning out though... as the appeal of cheap alcohol and easy women could easily keep me around for another 5 years.

Wha? Aren't there plenty of gigs out there that require math majors? Or is it that you're just not into it?

I just want to say "Look at me, I graduated" and be done with it. Yes, there are a lot of things you can do with it, but no, I don't want to do any of those things that really need a mathematics degree.

The theory is more interesting, but only the best of the best actually use that for anything (and I'm not one of those). The computational stuff is not so fun.

Ah, fall semester. I'll be doing that next year since I think I'm finally done hating and avoiding school. It'll be good to take a break from only working so that I can get a degree to, well, do more work.

I was miserable in highschool and college is like that but much worse. If I want to learn something I'll pursue it on my own through whatever methods I want to, be it college then I may go, but not very likely.

No man, I agree with everything you said, cept the military part because I would never do that, but I'm not you. Anyway, I started out hating college, did miserably my first year and a half there, took some time to go to a community college and get good grades and regroup, took some time off and then went back to the university and I'm doing fine right now, good grades and actually enjoying the classes somewhat (its just stressful around this time of semester). On the whole though, I can't wait to get this over with, its a large bill, its a stressful burden and I want my degree to show that I've put up with all these years of shit.

I can understand that, I dont think I am going to do anything with my future degree either (English/ Lit Concentration), its just that I got tired of doing Information Systems (aka IT) and changed to something that I would at least somewhat enjoy, I took 4 years of AP/Honors English in high school anyway. Thing is, I love to write fiction, and who knows, maybe the English degree can help with that - I doubt it though.

Honestly though man, it doesn't really matter what you get your degree in (ok, certain things you need certain degrees for, like law degree to go to be a lawyer or whatever), but I know people with psychology degrees who work as IT directors, and a guy with an IT degree who is a paid journalist. *shrug* All the degree shows is that you've done your higher education, and you're trainable.

Actually, a lot of colleges are leaning towards undergrads majoring in English before they go to law school nowadays.

I'm on the path to making $25 an hour in 4 years probably doing electrical engineering work assuming I don't go back into the Marines and throw my finincial situation farther into the toilet then it already is, but the Corp still appeals to me very much, the problem I've been having though is deciding if I really want to spend the rest of my life killing people or getting ready to kill people for low pay. I was thinking of doing 4-8 years active duty in the Corp and going to work for Blackwater making over 15k a month, but that's a dangerous line of work and telling people that for a living I contract myself out as a mercenary doesn't live good impressions. I still got some time to figure things out though.

It really doesn't seem much like that too me (and yes I'm being an ornary cunt). Just about all of my friends have gone off to college and almost all of them completely hate it and just seeing how much they ask me for help on random shit shows me the work load that I couldn't be happier missing it all.

Being confined to a classroom and being stuck to a routine of school work doesn't come anywhere near my view of freedom. I may be working a shitty job and not getting paid well, but once I come home in the afternoon the day is mine and there's not a fucking thing I have to worry about.

The way I see it, even though they are miserable, all of my friends are still living in their nice little dream world while I'm working for a living and I prefer to stay that way.

Working enough hours a week to live independantly and going to school wouldn't work too well with me, I barely have enough time as is.

Maybe I did troll a little but people responded to a few of my posts and I expanded. When all I fucking hear about from my old friends is their daily college life I wouldn't count myself as being ignorant to what going through college is, but maybe I'm getting the wrong info, it seems to me that they are always bogged down with work.

I'm not flailng about wildly in my classes atm. I had to drop Calc. II though
:( so thats one less final I have to worry about. It is officially the first class I've ever had to drop, and the worst part is that I wasnt failing, I was borderline just not failing - but borderline to me isnt good enough,(and I may not have maintained that borderline grade for long with a cumulative final and one more test on Infinite series equations coming up:sweat: ) and the math is only going to get tougher after Calc II. SO, I think I may regroup take Calc I again next semester , then try Calc II one more time in the summer. If I do shittily in it again - then time to change my major.
I think being in the Air Force for 5 years ,not having taken any form of math in that time frame THEN jumping headlong into Calc 2 was a bit optimistic on my part if not totally asinine and stupid. Hopefully, I can regain what little I lost in retaking Calc I. , we'll see though.

I hear you, I salivate over the coming winter break, but you know, with college you gotta do whats required =\. I have good friends who don't go to college, and am I any better off than them? Nope, not at all, at the end of it all I might have a degree and they won't but big deal, we're all regular people, no one's better than anyone. I can't wait until I get that freedom you're talking about, I took a year of school and enjoyed it... but there are ways to balance things in college.

I want this semester to end...now.

Im teaching 27 credits (9 courses!) at three different universities, while balancing a wife and baby and a personal life.

Christmas break cannot come soon enough.

So much stuff to do........so little time to do it in -___-;

Oh believe me, I know how to cram, I've read 100 pages of british literature right after work at around 11:30pm through the night, keeping awake on red bull and coffee, in order to take a test at 9am the next day. I have cramming down to a science but I usually prefer to study sometime before hand, have a loose grasp of knowledge I'm supposed to know, and then jackhammer all that stuff into my brain during a 2 day intensive study session.

Well, is that because thats what they are looking for, or is that because thats what the highest percentage of law school applicants majored in? Because I think the engineering/math/physics people are smarter than english people but they just dont go into law generally.

For all the stress I have to deal with, I've had my best years here too. Seeing as how this year has been pretty bad (although the first few months were perfect), and STILL not what I would call the worst year of my life, I'd say college rocks me.

But yeah...2 major projects in art, a report for lit, another report for econ, and finals all around. Not to mention my supervisor at the design job went on maternity leave, throwing me into 'leader status' only because I pull the most hours there. It's gonna be a rough 4 weeks...

It is what they are looking for. They have found that the skills learned in taking English courses is much more applicable to the work that is done in Law School so those students excel more than expected.

* Oblivious dumbasses that work hard and are good at following protocol.

I have a senior recital preview hearing on Wednesday. If I manage to suck enough ass to not pass the hearing I'm in school for a minimum two more years meaning I'll just quit and sell coffee the rest of my life. Besides that I have a paper due at 11am tomorrow, an assignment due at 2pm and a concert at 7pm with a call at 5:45pm.

Homework is not done. Cowboys played like high school losers. I'm already drunk.

Guess the homework can wait until tomorrow morning.

After this semester it's student teaching and then I'M OUT!!

=/ the sad thing is, it isn't really a joke. Most people who get as far as Calc 3 are dedicated to making something of themselves. At that point, if they just can't do calc 3 for whatever reason they go on with law or medical. In there minds they must do something big.

To be honest I think they are just putting off the hurt. Interning can be more demanding on the mind than juggling insane math classes. It isn't something I'd want to do.

Going to college was the best decision I ever made. Though it might not have happened without my mom pestering me to go. Hate when parents actually come out being right on things. If I hadn't gone, I probably would've continued the home course I had setup with ICS for a job in the Heating/Cooling industry. Got the idea from someone in High School that thought it was a good paying field and later started his own business.

Word. But yeah, took me 4.5 years myself. =) I was slacker going in. Failed an Art class cause I had an insomnia problem that caused me to miss a test the professor wouldn't let me make up. Really, it was being required to take all these liberal arts courses that were weighing me down, sapping my motivation. When I was finally finished with all the requirements and able to start my major/minor in Computer Science/Physics, I turned it completely around. Sure makes a difference when you can pick the courses that interest you. I then aced everything in my last 2 & half years and even did something I never would've dreamed of by knocking off 2 of the more difficult programming courses during summer. You have to get serious which I did by giving up TV, videogames, and weekends. I certainly didn't have the distraction of message boards or other Internet activities during that time which is clearly a plus. The other thing that helped was getting a job in the university so that most of my day would be spent there.

I will say, one of the things I regret is not having taken classes during the summer earlier as they really can work to your advantage. Listening to others about the difficultly you face always scared me away plus I wanted the relaxation. Looking back, I think you'll just do better when you're in the flow like that year round.

Today's been great, got alot of stuff materialized and ideas finalized, its going to be a tough three weeks ahead of me but at least I have a clear idea of what to do with everything now. =)

Sheesh. There's a major reason to why I'm glad school is free in the big C.

And now for my rants. I've been frantically running around for the past 2 weeks giving in work and class seminars. I had a presentation for my Theater of the Absurd class. About 90 minutes of me talking, making the correlation between a film and a play, which I both hated, but had no choice in presenting. And tomorrow, I'll be yapping in Western Civ about 17th century Europe.

After all that brouhaha is done with, I honestly have nothing but 2 exams on the last day of the semester to worry about, that I'll ace, and that's it. It'd be a choice time to get Live.

Off to grad school soon!

- 3 to 4 page paper on cinema

- Final 30 second animated short for Animation

And I will chime in and say that college was the best 4 years of my life (so far).

Two finals mid Dec. Final paper mid Dec. Lots of reading.

But, as I've told others, I'd rather have twice the work here than the type of work I had in HS. Loving it so far. Regarding next semester, lot of the classes I want are closed. Looks like I'm petitioning my way in again.

Welp, if this is just a place to complain, here goes...

The classes that I have this semester are horrible. I knew that going into it. What doesn't help is that I have trouble concentrating on classes like that and so I end up skipping a lot and not doing work I should do. I'd be surprised if I get out of the semester with anything higher than a 2.5 average.

It never ceases to amaze me how everyone's stress stresses everyone else out. My friends are going through so much drama right now that I have to just stand clear a bit. As if that's not enough, my girlfriend is stressed to the point of nervous breakdown, but she won't talk about it with me because she doesn't want to make me upset. And that...makes me upset. :mad:

To top it all off, I'm responsible for the student basketball fan section at the school, and the fact that I still have to get $500 to reimburse the athletic department for underwriting T-shirts isn't making me too happy either. Oh, and I also get to figure out hotel and transportation to New Orleans for 2 in the middle of exams. Hooray.

Thanksgiving is getting here just in time to give me a breather.

- ENG 300 (intro to lit. course for English majors)
- creating exercise modules for their title V web site (equivalent to 3 credit hours)

At univ. #3

- GEEN 1101, 2 sections (basic Eng. course)
- GEEN 1103 (3rd basic course)

On top of all the final exams I have to prepare, administer, and grade; I have to correct 10 journal entries for each student from each class and a final project from the English majors.

Thank God there's only two weeks to go!

Yay, time to complain.

No motivation this semester. I got nothing but uninteresting gen ed classes because Emerson cares nothing about giving people classes in their major unless they're about to graduate, and sometimes not even then. And considering I'm not allowed to do my scheduling for next semester until tomorrow (the first scheduling date was over 2 weeks ago), it's likely more of the same next semester. Bleh. Hopefully I'll at least get a writing class.

I think I'm dragging along with Cs in almost everything. It's my own fault, really, but I know for a fact that I'm not the only one at this school who feels this way and is pretty unhappy about it.

It's not that I can't handle the workload, it's just that the workload is comprised of stuff I couldn't give a rat's ass about. It's frustrating to think about how deep I'm placing myself in debt to be going to this school, and then to think about what I'm actually learning and how I feel about it. If things don't change next semester or in my junior year, I have no choice other than to get out of here because it's a bad idea to keep throwing my money away when I'm not getting anything out of it.

Looking forward to winter break, I guess. Maybe not so much if I get a shit schedule for next year, too. I bet all the classes I want are filled up already. At least I'll be able to sleep more, and if I don't before then, I'll probably get to finish Halo 2 and MGS3 then, which'll be nice.

With my long term relationship with my ex over and done with, I fell at the bottom of the bottle for the weekend. It really fucked up my work because I have 3 term papers due by the end of the week and none of them are even near completion. But this hot chick I've known for about a year wants me to get her bombed. So I guess this semester rocks.

For the next 2 weeks I hate Melf just because of his occupation. Nothing personal man, but, fuck you buddy! ;)

Yeah, final papers/finals are killing me right now. Plus I applied to transfer to Rutgers today. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Man, I totally feel you with that post. We share the same ideology. Out of the 7 courses I'm attending this semester, there are 2 that I really care about and enjoy, where my average ranges 85% and up+. As for the other 5 courses, they're just such uninteresting filler courses that I really wouldn't care if I failed. So far I have about 65 or 70 in those classes as oppose the high 90's in the classes I actually care about. And where I go on with this, beats me. I just don't feel like it's that big of a deal right now, but I really should, don't want to stay there for more then 3 years.

And why do you think there won't be room for the classes you'd like? Don't they have a first come first serve policy to the older students? We do. =S

Of course. The scheduling times are based on both credits you have at the present time, and other factors. Students in the honors program, regardless of credits earned, get to register immediately. My girlfriend may be busting her ass this semester, but next semester she has a pretty easy schedule and has a lot of time to relax, because she had first pick with the honors stuff. Dumb kids like me have to wait it out for another two weeks or longer while everyone else eats up all the classes we want. Granted, if I can get the classes I want, I'll take them at less convenient times. Though I don't like the idea of taking anything at 8 AM, because I'm not going to be able to function. The 12 years of education I had prior to college has more than confirmed my inability to learn anything in the morning, heh.

I guess I'll know how I do tomorrow morning. I have an awfully bad feeling about this.

Haha. No offense taken dude. The end of a semester pretty much sucks for everyone. If you want to feel better, think of it this way: You only take a few tests on one day and you're out. Each professor has to grade a shitload of tests from several groups. My semester lasts at least a week after finals due to all the correcting. Oh the humanity! :p

Yeah, didn't have to wait until tomorrow morning, even. I went over the course catalog... almost everything is full. Two of the few classes I want that are available conflict with each others' times. I can't get a single class toward my major. The first thing I did was leave an angry voicemail with the useless advising office. Tomorrow morning I'm going to fill a schedule with 4 classes I don't really want, and go to advising to raise hell. There is no reason I should be paying upwards from $30k a year to put up with this complete bullshit. I am not going into debt for this shit.

They're going to make room for me in these classes, or I'm going to leave. Unlike some people here, it seems, I actually want an education worth a damn to go with my diploma.

As for me, I finished my fucking paper today, was supposed to be 7-10 pages but i cooked it up to 13 (cooked up a load of shit!), its seriously the lousiest paper i've ever written but hey fuck it its godamnned done and worded alright so i'll be fine. I just didn't have time to flesh out clear ideas, whenever i tried to my mind was clouded. In fact my mind was clouded all throughout writing this paper... I'm so fucking glad its done, got all the works cited/inline citation stuff done this morning so I'm good.

=/ I don't see the logic behind what they are doing. Yeah, maybe doing things like that will help promote good grades, but shit, when most colleges don't have enough classes for one major, if enough people want that class they open another one up.

I don't see what they hope to gain by playing hardball like that with the students. "make super grades or we will not give you the classes you want"

Of corse there probably isn't any well thought out reason. A lot of big colleges are huge piles of shit when it comes to how they are run in regards to the students.

There are a lot of things wrong with many colleges in the US.

Two finals next week - Tuesday and Thursday, and then I'm finally done and can take a rest. This coming weekend is my last for studying and I'm damn glad of it - I could do with a bit of sleep, cause I'm not getting shit during these last weeks.

I seriously don't know why I even bother going. I'm not learning anything, and its just a waste of time.
