Who are you to say whether or not a kid "needs" a pony? Who needs a car, or a video game system? What the hell is the difference?
I didn't have a car as a kid, a few of my friends did. Were they spoiled? Is it okay because the cars they had were used, and not BMWs?
It would work as long as you ensured your spawn would still have a work ethic and social conscious, which is easier said than done when they won't need to and won't care respectively.
