Hardees announces a new "Monster Thickburger"

As many fast-food chains introduce healthier fare amid fears of being sued, Hardee’s is bucking the trend, serving up a megaburger with 1,420 calories and 107 grams of fat. St. Louis-based Hardee’s Food Systems Inc. Monday rolled out its Monster Thickburger — two one-third-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame seed bun. The sandwich alone sells for $5.49 or $7.09 with a medium fries (520 calories) and soda (about 400 calories).

Health-safety activist Michael Jacobson denounced the new Hardee's concoction.

"They would argue they are just giving people what they want. I would say this is beyond the pale," said Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "Probably no nutritionist ever imagined that a product like this would be marketed."

Jacobson pointed out that one Monster Thickburger contains twice the recommended daily allowance of saturated fat, and nearly a full day's worth of sodium. Even before the new Monster Thickburger, the chain offered five sandwiches with 1,000 calories or more, and eight overall that have more calories than what was once the big-burger standard — McDonald’s 600-calorie Big Mac.

"If Hardee's persists in marketing this junk, it should at least list calories right up on the menu board," Jacobson said.

While fast-food diets have been blamed for an epidemic of obesity and heart disease, last year a federal judge in New York dismissed two class-action suits blaming McDonald’s for making people fat.

“Maybe this is a smart strategy because there are still folks out there who care about the taste and size of their sandwich, and less about their weight,” said Jerry McVety, president of the restaurant consulting firm McVety & Associates in Farmington Hills, Mich.

The news report page that covered this is hilarous. They interviewed the Hardee's exec chef who made the burger and question him. His replies are hilarous and he don't back down an inch.

There's a deli in the Florida panhandle where my Mom lives that's themed after the Lord of the Rings (pre-movies, most of the art in it is taken from the cartoons). Their "One True Burger" pwns this one all over, especially when you order a "Fellowship of Fries" on the side.

There are no Hardees in Philadelphia. There use to be, but that was atleast 10 years ago.

The last time I went to a Hardees was on my way to Atlantic City, had to stop for gas at one of those rest stops.

Eh, there aren't really that many in the south that you guys make it sound to be, at least where I live (Southeast VA). They're just as frequent as a Taco Bell, perhaps less.

Even in moderation, it's just the fact that these things are incredibly unhealthy. To know that eating one of these burgers is like shoving down 7-10 chocolate bars at once is just sick. Not to mention that it is only one meal of the day that equals some peoples entire calorie intake and vastly more then the average fat intake. If I'm going to stuff my face, I'd rather it be something that is as good as it is healthy, and there are plenty of damn fine foods that are healthy.

I told some people I know about Eagle's today and they're excited. I'm going to start working red meat back into my diet with a little burger every now and then, and then some friends and I are going to Eagle's and we're going to eat our body weight in burgers and fries, and then vomit all night long.

Anyways, I thought of this thread on Saturday ... I was at Ruby Tuesday's (think TGIFridays with good food and better service) and they had something called a "Smokehouse Burger". 1/2 pound burger, smothered in BBQ, Sharp Cheddar and Onion Straws. The wife and I split it (and they had free french fry refills with it, so we both had an order of fries). I was waiting for the bill and noticed a "Dietary chart" on the table. That sucker had 1120 calories and 73 grams of fat!! My wife tried to rationalize it by saying "Well, we did SPLIT it". lol

Damn - that sounds good, smokehouse burger...except for the onion straws I could do without those. Good anecdote about the mayo too - i never thought of it in ... erm, that light.

I ate mayo for the first time when i was like 3, and i spewed everywhere - ever since then the sight and smell and taste makes me gag. EVil stuff.

I had one yesterday without mayo. It was the first time I've ever been to Hardee's.

It was fucking delicious.

I tried Hardee's once a few weeks ago, got the Western Thickburger. I can never go back to Wendy's or BK again.

Mayo is good in certain situations and in moderation. On a large sandwich, I plop it on so it's not so dry, and to add a little flavor kick.

It's not that bad on burgers either, so long as they don't slather the fucker in it.

Mayo is disgusting, as is Ketchup, Mustard, Ranch, Pickles, Tomatoes, Sauer Kraut, Onion Soup, Olives, and Tartar Sauce.

The funny thing is, for a long time, Hardee's used to be the LAST place anyone would go for fast food.
