Since Duke Forever's producer George Broussard is posting on 3D Realms' message boards asking for ideas for scriped events, it's safe to assume that our great-grandchildren will be able to tell us how the first level is when they visit our urine-soaked bedsides in the nursing home.

I do. I honestly think it has the potential of being the first 10 hour long game with no more than 30 seconds of boredom-inducing gameplay.
I didn't read the whole thread, but how do you get the impression of it not beingg close? Small easter-eggy scripted events are cake to do and don't need to affect story or anything.
I always loved Duke Nukem 3D personally, so I would like to see this come out in my life time, but I'm not holding my breathe for it

I liked the original DOS platformers. They should make an event where you can put money in an arcade machine and play them.

Well be driving Hover cars before this comes out, but surely the long development time has given 3D Realms the chance to make one of the most polished games ever made? I guess we'll find out when it's released.

If you want really detailed levels, textures, etc, you're going to have the rest of your people (animators) sitting on their thumbs because great levels filled with non-repeatable detail take FOREVER. So this does not indicate where they are in development.

Well,Duke as a franchise has suffered a nasty case of sequel-itis IMO,and most if not all of these sequels are unlikely to be very well remembered, and maybe even those that are total fans of the series would rather forget these unremarkable, almost instantly forgettable "sequels" ever existed. I've played his first two games (2d side scrollers).
I like duke 3d, but Duke Nukem Forever continues to languish even now, in development hell, and i think i remember reading that the reason was that the team behind Forever want it to be the very best, play the very best, look absolutely stunning. Does that mean that things on the project keep stalling because the developers aspirations cannot be sufficiently realised on todays hardware?
Is it better to wait, X number of years,for technology to catch up,or should game developers aspirations fall somewhat so that games such as this can actually be released within a certain time period?

I'm with Joust on this, actually. Scripted scenes, smaller ones, aren't exactly impossible to insert into a finished level, and Duke 3D is one of my favorite FPSes.
Yeah, it has a chance of sucking, but I just can't see this as another Daikatana.
The Megon physics executable was fun to play with. Hopefully they'll have alot of beer bottles to throw at hookers and whatnot

Duke Nukem 3D wasnt even that good. Well... 1/3rd of it was good. The levels in the shareware. The rest were rubbish.
This game is entering its 8th year of development. Seriously, why do people still care? This is just dumb, especially when AAAAAA games like HL2, H2, and GTA:SA are coming out with regularity.

Looking better then HL2 wouldn't be that much of an accomplishment these days. The HL2 engine started development well over three years ago and DNF supposedly started on their own engine a year or two ago. HL2 looked great when the previews come out, now it looks good, comparable to Doom 3 and will be knocked out of the top graphical department when the next cycle of games comes out.Quote:

Halflife kicks the crap out of Doom 3. Okay, that's not true. But it's a LOT easier to make things look great in shadow than in broad daylight, which Doom 3 didn't do in a totally believable manner. I also think for graphics you have to factor in the design of the weapons, trace fire, enemies (which Doom 3 does a terrible job at. OMG Flying skulls with mandibles!), and even the scope effects.
In every sense of those, Halflife 2 beats Doom 3 hands down.

Then the other Pig Cop wakes up and grabs its butt in surprise and starts crying and all of the EDF soldiers laugh and high-five. Then you (DUKE) can shoot the Pig Cop who is crying or you can just laugh or whatever.
It's not just the art. Doom 3 has alot more going on rendering-wise, but because of that it's really limited. HL2 might not have the amazing lighting model of Doom 3, but it can toss around a dozen super-detailed enemies around with physics on everything. Doom 3 simply can't handle high-polygon models, big daylight environments, and alot of on-screen action without choking. So it's really just pushing different limits in terms of technology.Quote:

Considering the game is more graphics-intensive than CPU intensive, and the Voodoo2 has all of 12 megs of memory, it is pretty impressive. So stop hatin'.
