The Megas XLR thread

All right, there being a 6-page topic on the shitty new Batman cartoon and none on an awesome show like Megas XLR is just wrong. So, here it is.

In a nutshell, two New Jersey slackers get ahold of a giant robot, trick it out (greasehog style, not gay rice rocket style), team up with a butt-kicking space babe, and have wacky adventures with galactic ne'er-do-wells, usually by accident.

The writing's top notch, characterization is spot on, and there are some really clever references; one episode has Coop using a Guncon to fire Megas' guns, he runs out of ammo, pauses for a second for dramatic effect, then shoots off-screen of the main console (which is flashing 'reload' and has 6 empty bullet symbols on the lower corner of the screen) and starts blasting again. Villains include parodies of MODOK and Captain Harlock.

Definitely one of the best cartoons being made, check it out if you haven't already.


As a sort of aside, those new Cartoon Network station identification spots with the realistic CGI of locations and stuff from CN toons are the greatest things ever. Extremely well-realized with a great sense of subtlety and style, far from the in-your-face crap other networks insult their audience's intelligence with.

Caught it a few times, it's a fun toon.

I don't get Cartoon Network anymore though so it bites being cut off from the usual good stuff :/

I can't get into this show at all. I can't stand it, it just annoys me in every aspect of it.

Great show, good times.

I think it's pretty damned ugly but the writing makes up for it. Not something I go out of my way to ever watch but I'm glad when I catch it on.

I just can't get into this show. I just can't. I've tried watching a few episodes but it bores the hell out of me. I hate all the characters so I could care less about what goes on in the show.

As you can tell I am the biggest Megas hater there is......

But yeah...I should have made a thread ages ago. My bad.

I am interested in this show because:
1) Giant robot. Duh.
2) American made giant robot. TAKE THAT JAPAN!
3) With all the references to things like Salor Moon, Mr.T, Voltron, Gatchaman, THE BLUES BROTHERS? It is how I teach my nephews about the world, and all the important things that have gone on before them.
4) Bruce Cambel as Magnanimous.....Groovy.
5) The sheer amount of goofy destruction that goes on, and everyone just ignores it and goes on with their life
6) This show would be a mirror into my own life, if I had a giant robot.

The newest ep had a Captain Harlock lookalike in it. It was pretty funny, but they didnt have any rampant drinking jokes like in Project A-ko. Probably the only show I watch all the time.

I missed a Harlock Parody? OH NO! I think it plays again tonight.

Megas is one of the best cartoons around. My wife and I thought that we were going to hate it, but we ended up loving it.

Great stuff. We make it a note to tune in every weekend.

I've liked this show ever since the original pilot aired under a differnt name like two or three years ago during the cartoon cartoon summer special. I like that this show is all action, and the gags actually make me laugh. All the video game references are great, hell, they even had a fucking Dead or Alive Volley Ball joke in one episode. The enemy designs are always cool, but the main characters could use some work. Kiva especially looks like some one out of those shitty christopher heart "learn to draw anime" for kids books.

Turns out there are a lot of haters for this show out there, and their complaints are valid. They mostly hate the lack of any character develop and the cliche things the characters say. "How bad could it possibly be?" *bad thing happens*, "At <insert something here> didn't happen!" *thing they just said happens*, etc. But I usually overlook that stuff. To me this show feels really under the radar as far as the other CN original stuff goes. There are ads for it, but not as many as you see for that GOD AWFUL Hi Hi Puffy Amaumi Show.

On a similar note, there should be a thread for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, which is a FANTASTIC new show that no one really talks about.

I agree %100, they did an amazing job with these. I loved the original one they did which was like a minute long with the camera zooming through toon town or whatever showing off all the major spots like Ed Edd and Edd's neighborhood, Townsville, The Watchtower in space, etc. Last night I saw one were Megas was stopped at a light next to scooby doo and the mystery machine which was pretty clever.

Not to derail, but yes, very true. Bloo is one the best characters while being the most basic design I have ever seen in a cartoon.
