Next time, try adding something a bit more descriptive to the topic.
And maybe a direct link to the article in question.
Nintendo sees DS sales hitting five million units

An innovative or unusual mechanical contrivance; a gadget.
An innovative stratagem or scheme employed especially to promote a project: an advertising gimmick.
A significant feature that is obscured, misrepresented, or not readily evident; a catch.
A small object whose name does not come readily to mind.
The is not a gimmick, and only falls under the second definition, but cant any thing even the simple GB fall under that category?
In fact, it seems as if the PSP is more gimmicky. Def 3 fits it right. OBscured....that sounds good for the PSP doesnt it? Roll it off your tounge then say PSP, its like peanut and jelly....just made to be. The PSP to me seems like a scheme, to help Sony not make money, but test the waters out for future products. We all know all three companies want to have their systems to connect to something, be it PC, GBA, and other future products.
I remember Sony stating they wanted to integrate the PSP and PS3 into future Sony products, so that would give you more incentive to buy their products. That only makes sense when you look at the PSP. Its so damn greedy. It isnt even a self substaiing organism gaming wise, its a parasite (Thats right KASSED) it obvously can not live by itself, which any portable with its 100+ dollar price tag should be able to do.
It says its a gaming machine, and I dont want to spend another paragraph talking about how its basically a cross between a PS1 and PS2 games(They say its capable of PS2 graphics, but remember Sony said the PS2 could do 75 million pixels, while the GC could do 12. but they didnt tell you the GC was in real time, while the PS2 was not. Not to mention at E3 the games were not running on a real PSP and that Sony told developers to dumb down the game...Anyone up for a game of metal gear poker??? Ill deal)
So not only do I not trust the gameplay, but lets look at its parsitic features. The Mp3 player, oh guess what, it doubles as a memory stick. So not only do you NEED to save your data on a portable memstick(on a portable machine???) but to get the full potential, you must use a PS type stick or one from Sony that has DUO on it. Not to mention, Sony released a I pod like thing, that has more batterylife than the Ipod or the PSP and much more space than the PSP and hours.
Now onto its parasitic movie capabilites. Lets see, DVDs cost around 5-20 dollars depending on if they are new or old. And you can rent some at blockbuster for around the same price depending on your package. Now, I do not buy DVDs, they are expensive, but that is still a decent price you see. Dvds can be played again and again on your DVD player on your HUGE TV. It wont run out of juice or something like that. Now the PSP has its own format, UMD. Whichs stands for universal, and it is, as long asit holds less than a DVD, the movies on it are hand picked from Sony, and of course you can not copy or burn them even though it is your property, Sony wouldnt want you to back up your copy. In case of fire, Dont break a glass, break the bank and buy more UMD movies.
After all that, you know the battery is weak also. So what does Sony do?
Give you a free battery to compensate for its pitiful charge time? Of course not, you need to buy your own and it will cost 50 dollars. Thats like buying a backup Halo2 or Metroid Prime 2 in case the other just stops spinning....
So the battery to last roughly 3 hours, greatly takes away from the portablilty of the handheld. I know people will say, *But Maw....I dont need three hours thats more than enough!!* Shut up. How can you seriously settle for three hours max of battery? Thats like having your GBA on red all the time. So instead of relaxing and throwing your feet up, you gotta think....damn can I enter this room and beat the boss in time...or will the load time totally drain the battery and make me do it all over again? With a portable, you should not worry about its battery life, not at all. What if you had a cell phone that had a 3 hour charge max, but if you make more than 5 calls the battery dies? Are you going to bring your charger with you to school and charge it while talking or while doing homework or laps in the gym? Whats the point of having a cell phone or any portable device if its constantly tethered to a wall for juice, which then keeps you still....is it really a portable anymore?
So lets recap. The PSP is a gimmick straight up. It has been but out there so you can buy more Sony products, will it work, yes, will it be a smashing success no. Why will it work? Brand name recognition. We have all bought something out of impulse that sucked because we knew what is was and felt we needed it. Sure its okay to spoil yourself, but by going near this dirty system it will latch onto your wallet and make you buy Sony.
It is a gimmick people, get over it. It has no function that supports itself, its a never ending parasitic cycle.
The games are played only on PSP not the PS2, even though they are basically PS2 games. The games were shown to have X amount of battery life, only if you use around 60% of the PSP's volume, resolution...blah whatever. Then you must go out and buy memory sticks to save your data. And while you are at it, you might as well buy another one to fit music on because it will not be sufficient. Then to get the FULLLLL power out of your PSP you need to buy a UMD, remember, only for PSP and its only movies Sony picks that you can not burn....at least not yet. Money is just flying towards Sonys mouth, operation gimme. Lets see the total price of these portable systems out right now.
GBA. 50-80. Extra batteries...like 5 bucks or a long lasting charge.
Link cable-10-20
Game or two. 40-60.
Total around 180 with tax.
DS 150 with a 6-10 hour charge, good, not awesome like the GBA where you can forget for a week or two, but good.
game or two. 70
(free downloadable games with your buddy -40)
Total around 280 with tax. But if you and your friends buy opposite games, you can save money by basically sharing the same game while playing at the same time with X amount of games
PSP. 180
Game or two 70-100?? (Will they be at GBA price, or PS2 price?)
memstick =20apx
UMD one or two ..30 (Going by DVD prices today)
extra battery pack 50 (needed to make it portable)
400 including tax.
So who wrote that for you?
Because you're too much of an idiot to have wrote it yourself.
Gimmick: Your account. Give it up.
I wrote it and by your lack of your counter argument I have owned you. oh well
I don't read the one-sentence remnant posts, let alone the page-long remnant posts. Go Nintendo.
Next time, just give us a bit of background on the article, it's not a question of me or anyone here being lazy, but it's more interesting to whoever's reading this thread, instead of site hopping for the info. Nonetheless, try to keep your own thread on topic.Quote:

And with the X-box, you cant play any DVDs at all, unless you pay extra money for a DVD remote!!! Nintendo has never used DVD region code stopping on any of their video game players.
...It was? I mean, maybe the argument that the PSP is gimmicky is valid, but all I saw was a lot of spelling errors and confusion...then halfway through I decided it was a waste of my time. You can list/bullet the important stuff for me though. If you want.

I don't even understand the point of the thread. That the DS will sell an assload?
Sure, but when the PSP comes out, I can predict a slump in DS sales. This thing is no Game Gear, N-Gage, or NGPC.
Besides, the PSP looks sexy as hell and the DS is the ugliest remindered of the 80s I never asked for. And to some superficial whores, this means a lot.
To me, ugly or not, a portable is only good if I have games I want to play on it. So far neither shows much promise. Though RR on PSP is luring me fast...
And when it comes to the portable market, competition doesn't start til the competition gets there. No one can say the DS will dominate until the full picture is in view - DS, PSP, and a decent library for both. Then we'll see if DS sales stay strong, even with the introduction of a Sony-brand product.
It'll be an interesting year for sure, and we don't even have next-consoles to thank. Go handheld, crappy looking 3D!
Remnant does have a point, most TNLers are Nintendo haters. Roufus couldn't even last more than a few posts without following up his Nintendo props with a knock. I think people forget that most third party games are on GameCube too.
I thought that too until I relealized how many pre-orders their are for the DS in Japan. Reports are showing up to 2 million. The PSP is launching just a week after on Dec. 12 in Japan and no reports on its pre=orders. Not even a million?
Nintendo believes they can sell 5 million DS by the launch of the PSP. That is a big number for handhelds. The PSP is going to have a hard time trying to convince people to buy a handheld with no battery life and weak durability. Also many people buy one handheld and gaining marketshare in the handheld marjet is extremely diffulcult. Ask Nokia and Sega.
And thats why this is the best gaming forum on the internet.Quote:
...most TNLers are Nintendo haters.
Oh, so let me go and get some of the year's best third-party games, like Metal Gear Solid 3, Burnout 3, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and Ghost Recon 2 for the GameCube. Rock on.Quote:
I think people forget that most third party games are on GameCube too.
DS will have Advance Wars.
The end.
I agree with Hero's final thought... sub-DC 3D? The prospect of adjusting a bad camera on a handheld, or struggling to make out stuff in the distance on a small screen? I really can't be arsed to get too excited about that.
dg;ogfo;fghi;hgflkhgdlkhvhpyegkhlkhp[g
but where ever the third parties go, that's where the gamers will go.
So it's a matter of whether or not DS pulls a GameCube - only noteworthy games being 1st party with little 3rd part support. I know all the talk of the 3rd party lineup for DS, but that was the case for GameCube too, and support gradually dropped off. If it winds up the same for DS...?
It might be a bizarro version of the console wars - all the third parties throwing in with what they know works in portables (Nintendo) without giving PSP a fair shake. Although Konami and Namco have already pushed some new game loving on PSP, whereas DS gets rehashes of N64 games...
It's too soon to tell how this will all end.

I figure that the DS is Nintendo's way of experimenting with portably hardware without having to use the GB name. At worst, it's a filler system, and at best, it could really light a fire under developers, which is likely, and happening.
Have you learned nothing from these Nintendo threads?
Other than the FACT that NINTENDO IS TEH DOOMED? No.
The PS2 sold so well so quickly becuase it had a DVD player. The PSP has a DVD player that can only play a select few movies and the PSP cost more than a good reliable portable DVD player on the market right now. The price of a DVD player is around $175.00 The PSP at its bare miniuim is $200. The price of the PSP is not worth it.
The Mp3 funcion will have to compete with Ipod and their dominance over the Mp3 market. If Sony markets that aspect of the PSP it will be competing with Apple at the same time. If they market it as a DVD player they have to compete with Panasonic, Toshiba and the numerous other companies trying to gain dominance in that market.
3rd party support for the DS is about the same as the PSP. The reason I beleive 3rd parties will support the DS is becuase it already has a much bigger share of the market than the PSP. If the DS sells 5 million units and the PSP does not debut at that high a number then 3rd parties will jump on the DS.
So the PSp has a 3 way fight with multimedia entertainment giants. Good Luck Sony, becuase your going to need it.
Nintendo needs to hire remnant. He's emulating their ridiculous spin jobs so well, and he's not even being paid to do it.
Since when does the PSP have an MP3 function?
Both PSP and DS will do fine in the market, DS probably slightly better as GBA tapers off. Anyone who thinks either platform is going to fail is fooling themselves.
OMFGNinja is the perfect example of a TNL poster. Instead of coming up with a counter argument he just post some stupid attack.
There is no counter argument for blind favoritism and willful ignorance.
So where am I wrong? the PSP is not trying to break into the portable DVD market? the DS is not outselling the PSP in pre-orders? The DS is not selling better then Nintendo expected?
He's just saying you sound like Nintendo PR agent.
Okay,so what. I still want to know how am wrong?
The PSP is trying to break into the portable DVD market just as much as the Playstation 2 was trying to break into the DVD market. While the PSP has a whole of bunch of features, these are really "extras" to the system's main purpose, which is to play games.Quote:

You saying that the PSP is going to fail based on its deficiencies compared to other DVD and MP3 devices is absolutely retarded. The PSP is certainly not trying to replace a DVD player or MP3 player just like a DS isn't trying to replace an instant messenger or Palm Pilot. It's just unnecessary spin so you can keep fellating Nintendo.

Here's a perfectly sound point. UMDs are like the Sony minidiscs--they totally couldn't compete with CD-R because CD-Rs are cheap, non-proprietary and ubiquitous. No one is gonna replace their entire DVD library to play on the PSP. Maybe Spongebob for the kiddies. As for MP3 functionality--everything has that now. Phones and cameras have it. Does that mean the PSP is competing with phones and cameras? Remnant logic would dictate as such. Unless the PSP starts sporting a hard drive it's not gonna compete in the portable mp3 market (the battery life on the PSP isn't that great anyway) By the way--the XBOX allows you to rip tracks from CDs and store them on your hard drive--watch out Apple!Quote:
