Unreal Gold

I just picked up Unreal II from the bargain bin at a local game shop, and I noticed Unreal Gold (Unreal + mission pack) sitting there as well. I only had enough cash on me for one game, and I don't know if it has compatibility issues with XP, so I didn't get it (yet).

I'm just looking for impressions of the game from a modern perspective. Most reviews I've read are from the time of the games release, and tend to emphasize the visual quality and framerate issues. I doubt I'll have any problem running the game on a modern pc, and I'm also sure the graphics won't blow my mind. I'm more interested in story and gameplay.

How does it compare with other FPS of its time, eg Quake II?
How does it compare with its own sequel?
Will playing through Unreal first make Unreal II a better experience?
Are there any compatibility issues with WinXP?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Only if you stop after the first one.

Single player is far better than Quake II.
It's better than Unreal II.
Nothing can make Unreal II a good experience.
Not that I know of.

Unreal is a really bad FPS. It has crappy weapons, little to no story, and it drags and drags on forever.

I never cared enough to pay any mind to Unreal II, but I hear that sucks too.

It had a great progression from level to level, and some nifty scripted sequences. The weapons could have been beefed up, but it was still quite nifty when it came out.

Haven't played it in years, though.

It's still a really pretty looking game in some places (mostly later), though you'll be sharply reminded why curved surfaces are a good thing.

Awesome, awesome music if you like chiptunes. Much hate for Epic going over to buttrock as their tunage for 2k3/4

If you're the type that soaks up atmosphere more than storyline, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for a coherent modern fps with a thick plot, a ton of scripted events, and lots of world interactivity, you'll be disappointed. If you simply want to run through a (long!) fps with some really pretty vistas and great music, you'll probably enjoy it.

And to echo the other sentiments here, Unreal 2 was kind of disappointing. It had none of the atmosphere of the first game, was basically unrelated (not that they could do much with the highly extensive storyline of the first), and wasn't an amazing game on its own merits. That aside, it too has some really gorgeous levels, and the last few in particular just look incredible.

Depends on what you want out of your fps games, and what you enjoy.

I was thinking that Halo2 reminded me of something and this thread helped me out - Halo2 reminds me of Unreal II.

I found the original Unreal fun because it wasn't Quake. U and UII were ok games, nothing I would consider playing again, though. They were fun time wasters when they were released and (back then) looked pretty. Yeah.

Well, I guess that's that. I think I'll grab it just for the hell of it. Hopefully it will run okay under XP, even if I have to run it under 98 compatibility mode.

All the anti-hype I'm feeling for this game will guarantee that I won't be disappointed. After the bitter letdown that was Halo 2, it should be a refreshing change.

Oh, I intend to, as well as HL2, Doom3, etc. But I have a bargain bin addiction to take care of too.

BTW, I'm pretty sure I know what the answer to this question will be, but here goes.

Is Firestarter any good? I saw it there too, and I didn't bother because the demo I played a while back was really shitty.
