Genma Onimusha

I've been playing Genma Onimusha again recently, as I've still got Onimusha 2 in shrinkwrap on my shelf and Onimusha 3 waiting for me to buy at work ($15!). I love the game, but I'm having trouble on EASY MODE. The game is just that damn hard. I know everyone's heard legends, but they're all true. This game is fucking difficult. I've been looking through the differences between this and its PS2 brother, Warlords, and I must admit, leveling up the swords AND the jewels would've been rather tedious. The magic system is improved and everything looks nice, too. Extra dungeons, and so on.
...but why does it have to be this hard? I'd like to beat this and go on to the second game, dammit.
I also find it odd that this was the only game in the series Capcom decided to do on the Box. Not only that, but doesn't it seem like it was kind of a "testing ground" for some of the concepts in Oni 2 & 3?
That doll, though... what a cool concept. Thing just pops out of nowhere sometimes.
Just felt like starting some conversation about this. Anyone care to join?

I only played the PS2 original briefly, and I bought this for $5 during the Circuit City clearance and never played it. What's changed significantly? When I'm done with classes and finally get through MGS3 and Halo 2, I'll give it a playthrough, maybe.

Trouble on easy? The game isn't that hard. It's also only 5 hours long. I beat it in a rental on normal.

Genma is definitely better than the PS2 original, if only for the ability to charge up your weapons. The extra dungeon amd enemies were just the icing on the cake.

I tried VERY hard to like Onimusha. Hell, I bought the entire trilogy (used) assuming I would love it. I only lasted about 1.5 hours into the game. Does it get more interesting/fun as it goes on?

I liked it a lot. One of the few games this gen that I've seen through 'til the end.

I really don't remember it having the degree of difficulty you're talking about. I played through normal and IIRC once I upgraded my weapon for the first time, things went pretty smoothly the rest of the game, and anything tough I only had to do maybe once or twice more to get past.

See, it's odd. It's those giants ogres. I can't seem to dodge ANYTHING they pull. Especially in the damn dark realm. Those areas are impossible!
Maybe I just suck at it too much.

OK, here's the secret: instant kills.

I played the game a long time ago, and didn't make it through. It was ok, just not that much fun.

THEN, oh then, I learned that if you attack at JUST the right time, you can do a one hit kill on nearly EVERY enemy, and receive health AND like 2x more spirit energy points than you normally would. So I went through the PS2 game and DESTROYED IT, like, it was crying for mercy. It was great.

Then I tried out the Xbox version, and it was too much... I had just played through Onimusha: Warlords like 3 times to unlock everything (plus the Oni Spirits mini-game), so I couldn't really stomach it. From what I played, though, it's MUCH harder. Just try out the PS2 original, you'll probably enjoy it more.

Maybe you do. Two tips for the Dark Realm: 1) cycle the use of your weapons. They all have individual bars and one can recharge while another is being used.
2) instant kills (I believe they are called issens, check out a FAQ. Some of the timing is tricky).

My first exposure to Onimusha was Genma and it was challenging but Mzo is right, one hits kills are key, especially in the multilevel endurance dungeons. But once you find your rhythm and power up your weapons you can blow through the game. Oni 2 was cake in comparison. Tank controls still suck though. Great game especially for the price,

Yo I keep hearing that it is too hard, but with enough mastery, you can do it!!! Okay, end pep rally. Seriously I love Genma, cause it's progressive scan, added a lot to the original, and is more challenging. The game can be mastered even on hard and above (I did it) -- you need to master, like MZO said, instant kills AND counters. Every single attack should be countered or insta kill the bigger baddies. As soon as sword hits, tap block then attack, bam countered. Or insta kill them, whatever you like. I tend to stick with countering the smaller ones, cause it is less risky and easier, but for big guys you most of the time have to insta kill them cause of block pushback.

A good trick for fast leveling (haven't played in a while so forgive me if I am missing something), but let those floating orb sucker thingies absorb a ton of souls from downed enemies and then kill them and suck that shizz up. You will net an unbelievable about of souls. Also level up your weapons ASAP, spend the time early on and be done with it. Then fire sword super those big guys in the phantom realm.

The only thing I never really could master in the Onimusha series, was that damn blackvest training in #3, now that was freaking hard if you ask me.

Great game, I'm hoping for another one.

BTW, Oni Tactics is pretty damn fun. Yeah it's cookie cutter SRPG, but it works for me. I"m near the end right now and loving it.

If you're good enough you don't really need the instant kill trick but still it helps when you're in the trials in the well and on the first floor. I'll admit that I used it once or twice for getting a step closer to the Bishamon Sword. The instant kill thing works by hitting the slash button right before you get hit, at least that's what I did.

Genma Onimusha was the first Onimusha that I had a chance to play and I thought it was great. Sure it had it's moments, but I don't get why people disliked it so much. It's too bad that they won't put these on the Box but then I think of just how awesome Oni: Demon Seige looks and I just don't care.

Overall, G.O. is a sweet sweet game and it goes for barely 10$ in stores. Worth a shot if you've never tried it, and Chao, try blocking alot, there monsters that are brutal if you dont start learning how to parry.
