I love pawn shops, and have snagged many gaming and music deals from them. I'm not as big a fan of the Salvation Army though, and there aren't any thrift stores around here that I know of.

Eh, there are a mixture of reasons that shit ends up at pawn shops.

One of the big reasons is impulsive poor people, or impulsive people who become poor later. They just had to have the LOTR collectors set last month, BUT this months bills are due and they want a new gibson Les paul, what to do, what to do? Guess what is getting pawned? And not only will that dvd get pawned but every other thing in the house, yard, area that they are not in love with.

Some people don't use ebay, and don't keep up with what things are worth, in fact, a LOT of people don't. They have no idea how much their stuff is worth, so they pawn it. All they know is they need money, but they have no idea how to maximize what they get.

So I wouldn't worry majorly about buying other peoples treasures. In this day and age there is a very small chance it is stolen goods. It is most likely the least valued thing iin the house of someone who needed cash quickly. And besides, if you don't buy it, someone else will.
